![ReGenesis, Making the World of Tomorrow a Better Place NOAA Research, Technology Outreach Branch Fragile Earth Studios is a NOAA project leveraging the tools of games and simulations to heighten awareness of and inspire solutions to real-world challenges. In the game ReGenesis, you work as an agent of the Global Environmental Temporal Authority. In 2017, Hurricane Rina caused a massive oil spill. Traveling back in time, you pose as a NOAA scientist working to limit the environmental damage. Why This Tool? Every week people spend three billion hours playing video games. Today, the industry generates more revenue than either the movie or music businesses. NOAA has a new market in the 190 million American households with game consoles and 50% of Americans that own smart phones. The National Research Council says video games have the potential to spark interest in the sciences. What Were the Results? Initial testing provided excellent feedback and product development continues with a new mission focused on satellite-based climate data. Over 100 data points were obtained regarding the public’s baseline knowledge of NOAA’s science and mission. Additionally, recorded videos of game play are some of NOAA’s most popular content on YouTube. What Resources Were Required? Funding for initial development was provided by NOAA Research. Continued support is being provided by NASA. ReGenesis is one of several products under development by two full-time NOAA employees.
