• New economic conditions have impacted healthy program areas
• Competitive environment has shifted - for profits with market share / lower margins

• The internet has changed the way prospective students evaluate degree programs

• Students are demanding higher levels of service and access

• Competition means strong instruction AND more flexible formats and IT costs

• Emmanuel College is a coed institution rooted in the Catholic academic
  tradition.
• The main campus sits on 17 acres in Boston’s Longwood Medical and
  Academic area.
• We are one of 6 Colleges of the Fenway
• We have a partnership/ 75-yr. land rental with MERCK
• We frame our liberal arts programs on ethics, diversity and globalization.
• Unique capacity internally--- 2/3 traditional age Arts and Sciences students.
  1/3 adult professional PT students in management, nursing and education
• Cross registration for undergraduate full-time students
The Strategy Behind the Partnering:
             Emmanuel College

• Stronger position with pedagogy via new forms of faculty development
• Increased opportunities for interdisciplinary courses for a small college
• Ability to serve via online courses, both continuing education / adult students and
Arts and Sciences students
• Cross registration for liberal arts online courses with the 6 other Colleges of the
Fenway
                 More access, ability to attract and retain, ability to increase
                  enrollment in liberal arts undergraduate online courses.
                  New programs and revenue in the continuing education
                   through delivery of online programs rooted in LMA
                        relationships (ex. New Graduate programs
                                in Research Administration).
The utilization of the partnership strategy
 Emmanuel/Online
Summer 2008
• Emmanuel College launched its first seven online courses
• Instructor-led asynchronous courses developed by full-time Arts and Sciences faculty members
• Contracted instructional designers, followed by FT instructional designer hired
• Launch at Emmanuel assisted by friends at Boston University
Summer 2009
• Three additional undergraduate and two graduate courses were built
• All online courses were open to cross-registration of Colleges of the Fenway students (6 area
colleges, existing cross-registration structures)
• Online courses are available to adult part-time students, and Arts and Sciences full-time
students.
Fall 2009
• Launch of 6-course online graduate certificate in Research Administration to a national
audience (after 1- year pilot of curriculum in face to face format for Longwood Medical Area
employees).

Demand for Innovation, Access, Excellence: The Common Need • New economic conditions have impacted healthy program areas • Competitive environment has shifted - for profits with market share / lower margins • The internet has changed the way prospective students evaluate degree programs • Students are demanding higher levels of service and access • Competition means strong instruction AND more flexible formats and IT costs A dilemma for small schools – and an opportunity for large providers with LMS capacity

Emmanuel College Small/Private (Catholic), Boston, MA • Emmanuel College is a coed institution rooted in the Catholic academic tradition. • The main campus sits on 17 acres in Boston’s Longwood Medical and Academic area. • We are one of 6 Colleges of the Fenway • We have a partnership/ 75-yr. land rental with MERCK • We frame our liberal arts programs on ethics, diversity and globalization. • Unique capacity internally--- 2/3 traditional age Arts and Sciences students. 1/3 adult professional PT students in management, nursing and education • Cross registration for undergraduate full-time students

The Strategy Behind the Partnering: Emmanuel College • Stronger position with pedagogy via new forms of faculty development • Increased opportunities for interdisciplinary courses for a small college • Ability to serve via online courses, both continuing education / adult students and Arts and Sciences students • Cross registration for liberal arts online courses with the 6 other Colleges of the Fenway More access, ability to attract and retain, ability to increase enrollment in liberal arts undergraduate online courses. New programs and revenue in the continuing education through delivery of online programs rooted in LMA relationships (ex. New Graduate programs in Research Administration).

The utilization of the partnership strategy Emmanuel/Online Summer 2008 • Emmanuel College launched its first seven online courses • Instructor-led asynchronous courses developed by full-time Arts and Sciences faculty members • Contracted instructional designers, followed by FT instructional designer hired • Launch at Emmanuel assisted by friends at Boston University Summer 2009 • Three additional undergraduate and two graduate courses were built • All online courses were open to cross-registration of Colleges of the Fenway students (6 area colleges, existing cross-registration structures) • Online courses are available to adult part-time students, and Arts and Sciences full-time students. Fall 2009 • Launch of 6-course online graduate certificate in Research Administration to a national audience (after 1- year pilot of curriculum in face to face format for Longwood Medical Area employees).
