Poison gas was a devastating weapon in World War 1 that could kill large numbers of soldiers over wide areas. The Germans were the first to use poison gas on a large scale in 1915, deploying it via artillery shells. Different types of poison gas included blister agents, choking agents, nerve agents, and tear gas, each with their own horrific effects on the human body. By the end of the war, over 1 million soldiers had been casualties of poison gas attacks.
