Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that results in scarring and damage to the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers. It has four disease courses and a variety of symptoms that can affect movement, coordination, vision, sensation, and cognitive functioning. While the exact cause is unknown, it is considered an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the myelin for unknown reasons. Genetics, environment, infections, and viruses may all play a role in increasing risk. There is no cure, but several drugs are used to reduce frequency of flare-ups and slow progression by modifying the immune system.
