This lesson is on nouns and pronouns. Students will learn the difference between an common noun and a proper noun. In linguistics, a noun is a member of a large, open lexical category whose members can occur as the main word in the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition. Lexical categories are defined in terms on how their members combine with other kinds of expressions. The syntactic rules for nouns differ from language to language. In English, nouns may be defined as those words which can occur with articles and attributive adjectives and can function as the head of a noun phrase. In traditional English Grammar, the noun is one of the eight parts of a speech.
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

There are common nouns and proper nouns. A noun names a person, place, or thing. For example, apple, book, girl, toy, boy, Bush, Hillary, Puerto Rico, building, parks, and others. These are all nouns. Nouns are naming words. Everything we see or we are able to talk about is represented by a word which names it, that word is called a noun.
A common noun names a person, place, or thing. You don't capitalize common nouns. Let's look at some common nouns: boy, girl, toy, ball, boat, game, mouse, dog, cat, garage, house, window, wall, building, school, church, etc. These nouns all name a person, place, or thing, b u t they do not name a specific person,, or thing.
A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing. A proper noun always start with capital letter. Let's look at some proper nouns: Mr. Gonzalez, Mrs. Torres, Tom, Sam’s, Texas, Jaime, Rodney, Ponce, and so on. All of these name someone or something specifically. Besides common and proper nouns, there are singular and plural nouns. Let's look at these.
Singular nouns are nouns that name one person, place, or thing. Here are some singular nouns : boy, girl, toy, game, cat, dog, rat, nail, and so on. Plural Nouns Plural Nouns are nouns that name more than one noun. These are plural nouns : boys, girls, toys, games, cats, dogs, rats, nails, etc.
