3. Definitions Disease—an impairment of health or a condition of abnormal functioning. Vaccination—a precaution against contracting a disease. Chicken pox—contagious disease, usually in children, caused by a virus and marked by low grade fever and blister spots. Strep—Spherical Gram plus bacteria occurring in pairs or chains usually in throat. Mumps—Acute contagious viral disease characterized by fever and by swelling of the parotid glands.

4. Background Information Diseases Impairment of health or a condition of abnormal functioning that can either be cured by a shot which includes medicine or prevented from the beginning by a vaccination.

7. Diseases—Nothing, vaccination, or shot with medicine? Explain that most humans only get sick once from diseases, like chicken pox, because after you have it your body recognizes it and can fight it again. Explain that diseases like a cold or ear infection make us sick lots of times because the diseases have more than one type. Explain that some shots contain medicine and can help prevent against the disease of that type, while others contain vaccines that prevent all types of that disease.
