1. Emergent spelling (ages 3-5) where children make letter-like scribbles without sound associations.
2. Letter name-alphabetic spelling (ages 5-7) where children learn consonant and short vowel sounds and spellings.
3. Within-word pattern spelling (ages 7-9) where children learn long vowels, r-controlled vowels, and more complex consonant patterns.
4. Syllables & affixes spelling (ages 9-11) where children apply spelling rules to multisyllabic words and learn inflectional endings and homophones.
