6. Explain with the help of sketches the working principles of the instruments used in
checking of pro le and base pitch of the gear. [16]
7. The data on a single quality characteristic of a component of a milling machine is
tabulated below. Find the control limits. [16]
Date Number inspected Number of defectives
1 369 14
2 347 27
3 405 44
4 304 70

8. (a) State and explain the advantages and limitations of acceptance sampling over
100% inspection?
(b) A single sampling plan has n = 110 and c = 3. The lot size is large as compared
to sample size. Plot the O.C. curve and nd the value of lot tolerance percent
defective for which the probabilities of acceptance are 0.95, 0.50 and 0.10
respectively. If AQL = 1% and LTPD = 4%, determine the producer’s risk
and consumer’s risk. Here n = sample size and c=acceptance number. [6+10]

Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
1. (a) With the help of sketches explain the constructional details and working of a
dial gauge. Clearly indicate in your answer, how the magni cation is achieved?
(b) Enumerate various types of outside micrometers and their uses. [8+8]
2. Explain with neat sketches, the construction and uses of
(a) Vernier bevel protractor
(b) Optical bevel protractor. [16]
3. (a) Describe the classi cation of surface roughness parameters involved in evalu-
ation of surface nish?
(b) What are the factors a ecting surface roughness? What is the necessity for
controlling the surface texture? [8+8]
4. (a) List the di erent elements required to be measured in order to determine the
accuracy of screw threads.
(b) What is Drunken thread? What di culties does it present in nalising the
pitch of the thread? [8+8]

7. (a) Discuss the functions and method of quality control in the case of a product
manufacturing industry such as soap manufacturer.
(b) Gears are inspected for error in tooth pro le and other defects in samples
of 100 each. Presence of any error renders the gears as defective. The data
below should be used for constructing control chart. Use percent defective for
chart to remark whether the process is under control or not. The number of
defectives in the twenty samples numbered 1 to 20 is given below: 1, 2, 1, 0,
1, 1, 0 1, 1, 3, 2 0, 2, 2, 1, 1, 8, 3, 0 and 0.
