                    systems.
               (b) Classify and give brief outlines of di erent types of standards used for mea-

           2. What are the essential considerations in selection of materials for gauges and what
              are the common materials used for gauges? Explain the various processes of man-
              ufacturing gauges?                                                                    [16]

           3. Describe the metho d to nd out the atness of a surface plate? State the precau-
              tions to be taken while using a surface plate.                                        [16]

           4. (a) Describe the essential characteristics of comparator.
               (b) How comparators are classi ed? Brie y discuss each. [8+8]

           5. Name the various alignment tests to be performed on a lathe. Describe any two of

           1. Describe with a neat sketch of the following with an example.

               (a) Di erential screw micrometer
               (b) Depth micrometer.

           2. Explain the principle of measurement by light wave interference method and what
              are the necessary conditions for interference of light waves?                           [16]

           3. (a) Discuss the relative merits and demerits of the mean line and envelope system
                    of measurement of surface nish?
               (b) In the instrument of surface roughness, heights of 20 successive peaks and
                    troughs were measured from a datum and were 15, 15, 20, 42, 15, 18, 62, 35,
                    25, 12, 16, 18, 12, 12, 2, 21, 17, 18, 35, 20 microns. If there measurements were
                    obtained over a length of 20 mm. Determine C.L.A (Ra) and R.M.S value of
                    the rough surface.                                                              [6+10]

           4. With the help of a neat sketch, explain construction, principle and working of Reed
              type Mechanical comparator?                                                             [16]

           5. (a) Distinguish between geometrical and practical tests.
               (b) Name and brie y explain the various instruments required for performing the
                    alignment tests on machine to ols.                                              [6+10]

           6. Explain with the help of sketches the working principles of the instruments used in
              checking of pro le and base pitch of the gear.                                          [16]

           8. (a) State and explain the advantages and limitations of acceptance sampling over
                     100% inspection?
               (b) A single sampling plan has n = 110 and c = 3. The lot size is large as compared
                    to sample size. Plot the O.C. curve and nd the value of lot tolerance percent
                    defective for which the probabilities of acceptance are 0.95, 0.50 and 0.10
                    respectively. If AQL = 1% and LTPD = 4%, determine the producer’s risk
                    and consumer’s risk. Here n = sample size and c=acceptance number. [6+10]

                    dial gauge. Clearly indicate in your answer, how the magni cation is achieved?
               (b) Enumerate various types of outside micrometers and their uses. [8+8]

           2. Explain with neat sketches, the construction and uses of

               (a) Vernier bevel protractor
               (b) Optical bevel protractor.                                                           [16]

           3. (a) Describe the classi cation of surface roughness parameters involved in evalu-
                    ation of surface nish?
               (b) What are the factors a ecting surface roughness? What is the necessity for
                   controlling the surface texture?                                                  [8+8]

           4. (a) List the di erent elements required to be measured in order to determine the
                     accuracy of screw threads.
               (b) What is Drunken thread? What di culties does it present in nalising the
                   pitch of the thread?                                                              [8+8]

           5. Describe how you would perform the following tests on a lathe

               (a) Leveling of the machine
               (b) True running taper socket in main spindle

               (c) Parallelism of main spindle to saddle movement.                                [4+6+6]

           6. Explain the following methods of inspecting gear.

               (a) Run out
               (b) Alignment.

           7. (a) Discuss the functions and method of quality control in the case of a product
                    manufacturing industry such as soap manufacturer.
               (b) Gears are inspected for error in tooth pro le and other defects in samples
                    of 100 each. Presence of any error renders the gears as defective. The data
                    below should be used for constructing control chart. Use percent defective for
                    chart to remark whether the process is under control or not. The number of
                    defectives in the twenty samples numbered 1 to 20 is given below: 1, 2, 1, 0,
                    1, 1, 0 1, 1, 3, 2 0, 2, 2, 1, 1, 8, 3, 0 and 0.

           2. A 120 mm sine bar is used to set an angle of 32.50. Determine the list of slip gauges
              needed? Estimate the error in the angle if

               (a) Distance between rollers is not correct by 0.01 mm
               (b) If diameter of rollers is out by 0.005 mm.

           3. The heights of peaks and valleys of 20 successive points on a surface are 20, 10, 48,

           4. Draw an illustrative the line diagram of a pitch measuring machine and describe
              its working?                                                                               [16]

           5. Describe the following alignment tests on a slotting machine.

               (a) Square ness of ram slide with table.
               (b) Square ness of the saddle with the ram.                                              [8+8]

           6. Explain any two methods measuring Gear Pitch?                                              [16]

           7. Explain the procedure to construct C - Chart with an example. What are its
              applications, merits and demerits?                                                         [16]

Explain the principle of measurement by light wave interference method and what are the necessary conditions for interference of light waves? [16] 3. (a) Discuss the relative merits and demerits of the mean line and envelope system of measurement of surface nish? (b) In the instrument of surface roughness, heights of 20 successive peaks and troughs were measured from a datum and were 15, 15, 20, 42, 15, 18, 62, 35, 25, 12, 16, 18, 12, 12, 2, 21, 17, 18, 35, 20 microns. If there measurements were obtained over a length of 20 mm. Determine C.L.A (Ra) and R.M.S value of the rough surface. [6+10] 4. (b) A single sampling plan has n = 110 and c = 3. The lot size is large as compared to sample size. Plot the O.C. curve and nd the value of lot tolerance percent defective for which the probabilities of acceptance are 0.95, 0.50 and 0.10 respectively. If AQL = 1% and LTPD = 4%, determine the producer’s risk and consumer’s risk. Here n = sample size and c=acceptance number. [6+10]

(a) Describe the classi cation of surface roughness parameters involved in evalu- ation of surface nish? (b) What are the factors a ecting surface roughness? What is the necessity for controlling the surface texture? [8+8] 4. (a) List the di erent elements required to be measured in order to determine the accuracy of screw threads. (b) What is Drunken thread? What di culties does it present in nalising the pitch of the thread? [8+8] 5. Describe how you would perform the following tests on a lathe (a) Leveling of the machine (b) True running taper socket in main spindle (c) Parallelism of main spindle to saddle movement. [4+6+6] 6. Explain the following methods of inspecting gear. (a) Run out (b) Alignment. [8+8] 7. (a) Discuss the functions and method of quality control in the case of a product manufacturing industry such as soap manufacturer. (b) Gears are inspected for error in tooth pro le and other defects in samples of 100 each. Presence of any error renders the gears as defective. The data below should be used for constructing control chart. Use percent defective for chart to remark whether the process is under control or not. The number of defectives in the twenty samples numbered 1 to 20 is given below: 1, 2, 1, 0, 1, 1, 0 1, 1, 3, 2 0, 2, 2, 1, 1, 8, 3, 0 and 0.
