Media Presentation
What you set out to achieve The main aim of Purple Duncan (the name of the magazine I chose) was to attract a young audience who enjoy indie rock music to read my magazine. The magazine would mainly target 16-25yr olds, mainly because this is the age groups that still go to music concerts/gigs on a regular basis. I found out that although there are a lot of mainstream rock magazine’s they covered little on Indie Rock, so I decided to do Indie as it was a genre I myself enjoy. I needed my magazine to not only attract my target audience, but be well designed enough that it would attract a small publishing business to take my magazine on therefore I couldn’t make my magazine sloppy, it had to look professional.
In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and convections of real media products My magazine uses stuff like free promotional offers on all the latest gigs just like a real magazine would. It also offers exclusive interviews with new bands and offers the user opportunities to enter competitions to win prizes to meet the bands.
How does your media product represent particular social groups My music magazine is representing people who are interested in alternative indie rock music, I did this by using particular colours like purple because it is a colour that isn't used that often and is very relaxing to look out which is similar to the fact that indie rock is generally very slow and relaxing type of music, often near enough to country music. My Magazine is trying to appeal to people between 16-25, this is because these are the age groups that are more likely to spend there money on going to all the gigs, which my magazine offers discounts for making it one of the major selling points
What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why? Due to my magazine not being a mainstream product, I could see maybe a small publisher distributing it to several UK retailers such as WHSmiths or a small chain of convenience stores like Nisa, but mostly it would have to be subscribed to and order of an internet website.
Who would be the audience for your media product The age group my magazine is targeted at is 16-25yr olds because this is the average age groups that still spend the money on going to Gigs and are more likely to be interested in hip new music bands and groups rather than there old favourites.
How did you attract/address your target audience To attract my audience my magazine offered exclusive interviews with new musicians on the scene as well as promotional offers on all the latest gigs as well as interviews on old favourites and competitions for them to enter to win tickets to gigs etc. I used colours and font style that is generally associated with the indie rock culture such as one of my fonts being in American 70’s diner which is when Indie Rock first really came onto the scene
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? During the process from start to finish of this magazine I have learnt how to successfully upload and use the things on the E-blogger. My skills in fireworks have also improved greatly whilst the course had gone on as at the beginning I was almost clueless on what to do.
Looking back at the preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product When look at the original task I see it as a learning experience that I needed as I had no idea really how to design a magazine, doing the preliminary task it also helped me to develop my questionnaire techniques as well as tuning my skills in fireworks, it helped me to understand some of the basic rules in designing a magazine such as the rule of three and where the main image should go according to the rest of the magazine. Without doing my preliminary task I would not have been able to do my music magazine as well as I think I did
How well does it fit the brief My magazine fits my brief reasonably well, it uses the colours that would attract the target audience as well as the type of font, also the language used in is very indie and hip thus relating more to the target audience The main image of the band Blue Mercury who are also my double page spread feature also relates to the indie rock genre due to the type of clothing they are all wearing and the poses that they are doing. The Double-Page spread itself intrigues and interests the reader due to the layout being very funky and Indie in itself as it makes you read the headlines and the top which makes you want to further read on.
Audience evaluation and feedback When i received the feedback from the audience and people who had read my magazine there was mixed reviews, they believed that the colour and font choice was well done and the double-page spread looked very well and professional. They did however say that my Images needed more variety to them and that the Contents page looked very rushed and unprofessional. I asked them what they would give it /10 and the average rating I got was a 7/10, Overall they praised the double-page spread and front page but said they believed the contents page was disappointing and not up to standard. If I could got back I would definitely change the contents page to make it look better and as good as the other two pages.
