2. Nano Fuel Additives: Overview
• Nano Fuel Additive technology is a new concept of reduction of friction and wear through
the use of nanotechnology
• Transportation is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Many people
have advocated a change in consumer behaviour as the best way to reduce
consumption. an approach which has seen more activity is on the fuel production side.
Fuel formulations and additive packs are now being designed to improve fuel
consumption and reduce harmful emissions
• Fuel additives have been one of the most prolific innovations of liquid engineering as
well as material science giving natural fuel sources additional properties which help us
drive that little extra out of them. Whether it’s an additive to alter a fuels burn rate,
increase surface area, prevent corrosive effects or simply color, innovators have
developed a range of additives over the years which give these fuels an added property
which serves a pressing need from consumers

3. Search Strategy and Sequence of steps
Using PatSeer database a sequence of steps was used to create search query. The table below shows sequence of steps we
followed. We combined keyword with relevant IPC, CPC, US and Japanese Classes to restrict the result set to relevant
records. The results were then collapsed by Simple Families. The publications included in the report are updated as of 15th
November 2014.

32. Summary
There is considerable difference between the Chinese and US share in
application and patents. Chinese applicants accounted for the largest number of
patents filed throughout the world
Only 5 (CN,US,JP,WO,EP) out of the total 17 patent offices have reported growth
over the last decade. China has recorded double digit growth between 2011-2013
Nano particles is an area where companies have a scope of carrying out research
as most of the companies focus on few of the total nano particles used as fuel
additives
In spite of the fact that Chevron has smaller portfolio than the major companies; it
can be seen that companies like Shell and UOP have cited its records indicating a
likely overlap in their R&D focus
