- 3. www.facebook.com/saveundershaw What These Offer... • BBC Sherlock – Updated to modern day but heavily uses the canon. Emphasis on the adventure as well as the crime. • Elementary – Also updated to modern day but set in New York. Stories are new and independent of the canon – police-procedural format. • Warner Bros/Guy Ritchie trilogy – Set in Victorian period but with emphasis on action and comedy. Stories also not closely related to the canon. • Russian series – Also set in the period but with a young Holmes (27) and examination of Watson’s embellishments • Big Finish – Traditional, faithful re-telling of the original stories. • No Place Like Holmes – A popular, fun YouTube channel involving a time-travelling Holmes and Watson • So – Do these works between them cover all bases? We have modern day crime and adventure, high-action, traditional Holmes and comedy. But I still think something is missing...
- 4. www.facebook.com/saveundershaw What I think should come next... • I believe there is a large section of viewers for whom none of the current adaptations really appeal – they enjoy the following shows: • These viewers are not particularly interested in crime drama but would love the adventures in the canon if only they realised it wasn’t all murders and police • I think it’s time for something different, something which is more human-interest and sees Holmes through new eyes
- 5. www.facebook.com/saveundershaw A Case Study • Barefoot on Baker Street involves the character of Sherlock Holmes but isn’t a crime drama • Barefoot offers a fresh take on Moriarty and sees Holmes through eyes which are very different to those of the middle class, middle aged Doctor Watson • The novel remains faithful to the canon and is set in the Victorian period • In my opinion, Barefoot has the potential to be the next major TV Sherlock Holmes drama

- They are very influential and have propelled shows such as Downton Abbey to massive success. They enjoy human-interest drama set in the past such as Downton, Call The Midwife, Mr Selfridge, Cranford, Lark Rise to Candleford and Dickens adaptations. We must remember that the original Sherlock Holmes stories are full of emotional tales – lost loves, run-away brides, evil step-fathers, dashing sailors and star-crossed lovers. We need a film or TV drama which will cater for these viewers and draw them into the complex character of Holmes and his world. Not simply the eyes of Doctor Watson. We need to see his heart but as part of a drama which stays true to the canon.
- Though it contains elements of crime, violence and adventure, it is a human-interest story following the life of a workhouse orphan. The story is seen through her eyes and follows her journey from poverty in Victorian London’s East End to eventual peace and fulfilment towards the end of the century. We learn more about Holmes as a man, his unusual mind and how he sees the world. It is full of canon references and reproduces certain stories almost exactly the same as they are in the original works, specifically The Final Problem, The Empty House, The Blue Carbuncle and part of The Sign of Four. There is also a continuation of The Man with the Twisted Lip. Barefoot was specifically written to appeal to both Sherlock Holmes fans and those who know nothing about Holmes except that he had a friend called Watson. It would adapt well into a one-off three part series which would be different to everything else currently on offer and appeal to a new section of viewers, whilst retaining existing Holmes fans.
