4. Dear Friends,
To mark our 10-year anniversary we reflect on our journey from a small but ambitious network of several dozen bloggers working
on a single platform, to a vibrant, inclusive community of more than 1,200 volunteers in over 130 countries, collaborating across
time zones, languages and disciplines.
The transition of online conversations from single-author blogs to diverse social media platforms and mobile apps creates new
opportunities—and new challenges—for understanding and reporting on citizen media. The shift away from blogging
communities linked by blogrolls and comments sections and the growth of microblogging sites means that while we may see a
greater volume of expression, we see fewer instances of in-depth writing and commentary. Online writing now often looks more
like speech, and requires new skills of verification and contextualization.
In a series of conversations among our staff and community, we decided to focus on the framing of news stories, emphasizing
why an array of perspectives must be included in global conversations. In a time of abundant online speech and media, we
recognize that there are striking gaps in attention, access and opportunity, as well as significant censorship and interference in
both access to information and participation in online conversations. We continue to focus our work to address these inequities.

We developed new editorial practices to improve the quality of our stories and our ability to connect with our readers. We also
committed to integrating the work of our three primary projects—the Newsroom, Rising Voices, and Advocacy (Advox)—
publishing almost all of our stories on globalvoices.org. We also launched a blog for community interaction and engagement,
where community members can publish everything from personal narratives to community news, editorial tips and best practices.
Finally, we marked this important anniversary with a major redesign—focusing on speed, ease of navigation and emphasizing
stories and people. The new look pares down clutter on the site to focus on stories, highlights our most successful projects, and
allows for a responsive design that makes our work more approachable on mobile platforms.
The result: Global Voices in 2014 is a more vibrant and cohesive community than ever, using improved tools to bring stories of
underrepresented voices and communities to our growing global audience.

6. Many of the world's most interesting and important stories aren't in just one place—sometimes they’re scattered in bits and
pieces across the Internet, and in multiple languages. We curate, verify and translate trending news and stories you might be
missing, from blogs, independent press and social media in 170 countries. And we translate into 30-plus languages.
Since our launch in 2004, we’ve become a leading citizen media community focusing on underrepresented stories and voices.
Our virtual newsroom pioneered the practice of social media news gathering, and today we produce stories from all around the
world based on local framing and concerns and focused on the global South.
Today, Global Voices is a key source of information and verification for journalists, policymakers, open Internet advocates and
digital activists. Our stories generate valuable data for researchers and academics and are read widely by audiences interested
in global issues, including governments and IGOs such as the U.S. State Department, the Dutch Foreign Ministry and UNESCO,
and the policy teams of companies such as Google, Yahoo! and Facebook.

In 2014 we got a new look. We refreshed
our logos and rolled out a new, streamlined,
responsive design across our sites, aimed at
improving user experience and optimized for ease of
navigation and discovery. The same great stories written and translated
by your favorite Global Voices contributors—just a whole lot simpler to access.

In 2014, we dedicated more resources to improving our work and expanding our subediting team. We introduced Edit Flow, a backend
tool in our CMS that allows transparent and collaborative editing. We produced videos and a citizen media verification guide to encourage
our writers to focus on crafting stories that serve our mission. And our team of newsroom editors started producing weekly writing tips
for our community. This year we were also joined by new editors for Portuguese-language countries, Latin America, Central Asia, Turkey,
Iran, Japan and Brazil, as well as a new co-editor for the RuNet Echo project.
Besides our focus on mission-related angles and rigorous fact-checking and sourcing, we began experimenting with writing shorter posts
and posts in different formats. We also started publishing larger, more eye-catching photos and livelier headlines and reporting around
monthly themes such as food and transportation. In 2014, we expanded our editorial partnerships to over 50 news organizations, ranging
from small citizen-led projects to major mass media. Media outlets such as PRI.org, Rue89, Motherboard and Slate republished our
stories, often receiving traffic in the hundreds of thousands.
We published 20 commissioned stories for Freemuse, the leading defender of censored musicians online. We expanded partnerships with
two environment advocacy-focused sites, 350.org and Ensia. We also mentored six individuals through our partnership with the Melton
Foundation.

In our Special Coverage section we dug deeply into 20 issues that had our community particularly engaged. Some were global issues that
we covered from unusual perspectives, while others were unique to our work. Examples include the Sochi Winter Olympics; the protests
in Venezuela; Taiwan’s sunflower movement; the Snowden leaks; the Malaysian Airlines MH17 crash; war in Gaza; stories of artwork
protesting censorship; Mexico's missing Ayotzinapa students; personal dispatches on life in Aleppo, Syria, by Marcell Shehwaro; Ebola in
West Africa; Hong Kong's Umbrella Movement; and in-depth interviews with eastern Ukraine’s most interesting bloggers.
In our video Hangout series we covered elections in Ukraine and Tunisia; protests in Hong Kong; activism in Bahrain; the plight of
Ethiopia’s jailed Zone 9 bloggers; culture blaming in South Korea's ferry tragedy; people-powered flood relief in Serbia; asylum seekers
fleeing conflict to Europe and Australia; the pursuit of justice for Mexico's kidnapped students; Net Mundial in Brazil; the state of Iran’s
blogosphere; the USA’s secret “Cuban Twitter”; the way forward for Ukraine’s Euromaidan protests; massive political marches in
Bangkok; the rise of the “Common Man’s Party” in India; and censorship in Korean pop music.

10. Lingua

The Lingua translation community continues to grow, both in absolute numbers of participants and in languages. In 2014 we had more
than 400 active volunteers across our Lingua sites, and we receive thousands of inquiries for participation each year.
Altogether, Lingua sites translated 12,829 posts in 2014; its sites were visited 3,377,942 times and received 4,625,109 page views. Including
all Lingua social media accounts, total Twitter followers were 140,753 and Facebook fans were 131,135. We also launched four new
languages: Romanian, Odia, Kurdish and Pashto, the last two still in testing. In total there are 42 Lingua sites with varying degrees of
activity.
Some emblematic milestones, both small and big: Global Voices in Swahili team celebrated their 1,000th translation after many years of
inactivity, while Global Voices in Spanish surpassed Global Voices in English’s publication rate, producing a total of 4,137 posts, including
translations of Global Voices, Rising Voices, Advox posts and original content. Global Voices in English published 3,573 posts.
Our multilingual newsroom—the writing of stories in languages other than English—slowed in 2014, continuing the trend started in 2013. We
have had in total 515 posts written in other languages. The multilingual newsroom is very alive for some languages: almost 100% of the
Spanish authors chose to write in their mother tongue.
The Lingua Fair Trade Translation experiment added new partners in 2014. In addition to ongoing work with Witness.org and Refugees
United, we provided translations to Agência Pública (Brazil), WebWeWant (global) and the Media Legal Defence Initiative (UK). Languages
commissioned include Amharic, Arabic, Croatian, Filipino, French, Macedonian, Portuguese, Shona, Somali, Spanish, Swahili. These
partnerships provide an extra income for community members and a small margin for Global Voices.

12. Advox (Global Voices Advocacy)
In 2014, the Global Voices Advox team covered a diverse range of important stories from around the world. From Egypt to Ethiopia to
Tajikistan to Turkey, Advox authors wrote what they saw on the ground, on the Internet, in court and behind bars. Of the hundreds of
stories we covered and advocacy initiatives we took on in 2014, here are a few that capture this incredible year of free expression
activism around the world:
In January, the Adox community supported the 2014 Arab Bloggers Meeting in Amman Jordan, bringing together more than 100 digital
activists, bloggers, Internet policy experts and media producers to exchange knowledge and to debate the state of online participation
in the Arab world. A key moment in this event was the release of a statement in support of the many unjustly detained activists in
Egypt, signed by dozens of international freedom of expression organizations.
In March, on the eve of the global Internet governance event hosted in Brazil, NETmundial, the Brazilian Senate approved the one-of-
kind “bill of rights" for Internet users, known as “Marco Civil”. The Advox team covered the trajectory of this bill from its arrival on the
Senate floor in 2012 to its rise to prominence in the wake of the Snowden revelations. Marianne Diaz, a Venezuelan free expression
lawyer, Creative Commons lead and dedicated GV contributor covered the resulting global NETMundial conference and participated in
the event on our behalf. Reflecting on the ongoing challenges of preserving a law like the Marco Civil, Marianne wrote: "Local laws will
only honor the interests of the global community if Internet users across the world make the time and effort to speak their minds."

13. In Ethiopia, six members of the Zone9 blogging collective—four of them Global Voices contributors—were arrested and imprisoned on
April 25, 2014 along with three journalist colleagues. Months later, all nine detainees were charged under the country’s penal code and
the Terrorism Proclamation of 2009. From the moment of their arrest, the Global Voices community rallied to support and amplify the
bloggers' story through large-scale social media campaigns, continuous coverage and direct advocacy at the African Union and the UN
Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Here is testimony from Befeqadu Hailu, one of the jailed Global Voices members,
from prison: "…we had nothing to be scared of, because we are neither undercover agents nor members of armed forces. We are just
writers. But as soon as I arrived at Maekelawi, detainees informed me that I had been placed in one of the notorious sections of the
detention center, known as 'Siberia'."
Under the leadership of our Hong Kong-based China editor Oiwan Lam, Global Voices covered the movement to change Hong Kong's
electoral system for many months before the protests captured mainstream media attention in September of 2014. Alongside our
coverage of events on the streets of Hong Kong, we highlighted -- and offered solutions to -- the technological challenges faced by
protesters and by local independent media who suffered unprecedented attacks on their websites at the height of the movement.
In a piece entitled "Hong Kong's Journalists Battle Self-Censorship, Intimidation and Police Violence to Report Umbrella Revolution,"
Oiwan wrote: "While the government and the pro-establishment camp can employ public resources and even the police to fend off
invasions, citizen media have no choice but to resist large-scale attacks on their own. The reason for their survival in this increasingly
harsh environment is the awareness that online independent platforms are an essential element of a free society and the tireless,
round-the-clock work of their technical teams. Without support from citizens who care about free speech and democracy, citizen
independent sites will not be able to sustain this level of technical assault in the longer term."

2014In 2014, our RuNet Echo project analyzing the Russian Internet went from
strength to strength, with colorful explorations of key issues and breaking
stories about one of the world’s most idiosyncratic online spaces.

Amazon: We ran a special project in collaboration with Avina Foundation, Avina Americas, and the Skoll Foundation. For the first time in
the history of our microgrant competitions, we targeted a specific geographic territory—the Amazon, which spans nine countries across
South America. Applicants were offered the option of uploading their proposals to our interactive WordPress platform and share them
with the world. We created instances of the platform in Spanish and Portuguese, two of the primary languages of the region.

Indigenous Languages: In October Rising Voices co-organized a gathering for Indigenous Language Digital Activists in Oaxaca, Mexico.
28 digital activists representing 20 different Mexican indigenous languages attended the workshop. The goal was to build the foundation
for a network of mutual support for Mexican digital activists working to promote the use of indigenous languages through the use of
participatory digital media.
GV Meetups: Rising Voices continued to help GV community members organize Meetups around the world. This initiative helps us
connect with local audiences, recruit potential new volunteers and spread the message of GV in local communities. In 2014 Meetups were
held in Accra, Tunis, Dar-es-Salaam and Beirut.
