INSTITUTE FOCUS
The Global CCS Institute connects parties around the world to solve problems, address
issues and learn from each other to accelerate the deployment of CCS projects through:
ASSISTING PROJECTS
ï§ bridging knowledge gaps between demonstration efforts; and
ï§ developing project-specific solutions particularly amongst early movers.
SHARING KNOWLEDGE
ï§ collecting information to create a central repository for CCS information; and
ï§ creating and sharing information to fill knowledge gaps and build capacity.
FACT-BASED ADVOCACY
ï§ to inform and influence domestic and international low carbon policies;
ï§ to advance understanding of appropriate risk regimes, funding and financing
solutions; and
ï§ raising awareness of the benefits of CCS and its role within a portfolio of low
carbon technologies. 2

GLOBAL SITUATION
ï§ 80% of the total CO2 emitted over the period to
2035 is already âlocked-inâ by existing capital
stock, leaving little room for adjustment.
ï§ If internationally coordinated action is not
implemented by 2017, any new investment must
be zero-carbon.
ï§ Delaying action is false economy. For every $1
of investment avoided before 2020, an
additional $4.3 would need to be spent after
2020 to compensate for the increased
emissions 13

KEY MESSAGES
ï§ CCS is a critical tool for combating climate change, and
the costs will be higher if it is not used.
ï§ Political support and appropriate incentives are vital for
project progression.
ï§ A number of power projects are on the verge of FID but
making the business case is difficult.
ï§ Two power projects under construction - with government
funding.
ï§ Greater collaboration and transparency between
government and industry is needed.
