Wisdom tooth extraction: is it always necessary?
1. Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Is it Always
Necessary?
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last to develop as
teenagers mature. They usually appear between ages 17 to 25. In most
cases, they don’t have any room in the mouth or are in the wrong
position. The pain associated with the growth of a wisdom tooth should
be treated quickly to avoid complications.
Misaligned Wisdom Tooth
Wisdom teeth are no different from any other tooth, except that they
are last to develop. If they grow properly aligned, they can be as useful as
any other tooth. In most cases, however, they are misaligned and
require removal.
When wisdom teeth are misaligned, they can be positioned horizontally or angled toward or away
from the second molars. Poor alignment of wisdom teeth can crowd or damage the teeth, the
jawbone, and the nerves.
Solutions for Tooth Pain
If a person begins to experience pain related to wisdom tooth infection, the dentist or oral surgeon
may recommend a conservative treatment such as antibiotics or over-the-counter pain relievers.
Such methods may be effective for those who don’t want to undergo surgery. If an infection starts,
however, the surgical approach may be the last chance for relief.
Surgical Removal
Surgical extraction is another common method for avoiding complications and infection. Health
professionals believe that when the teeth cause infection, they should be extracted to avoid further
problems. Wisdom teeth extraction is usually performed data dentist or oral surgeon’s office.
General anaesthesia is used to avoid discomfort during the procedure.
Erupted Wisdom Tooth
An erupted wisdom tooth may also need to be extracted. The dental professional may advise the
removal if the tooth is interfering with the bite, has decayed, or is putting the patient at risk of
periodontal diseases. But then again, every case is different and only a dentist can determine if there
is a need to remove the wisdom tooth.
Once the wisdom teeth are removed, the dentist will give the patient clear instructions on mouth
care. Following the dentist’s instructions is extremely important for faster recovery.
