8 Fahrenheit

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT 8 FAHRENHEIT THROUGH THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF THEIR CO-FOUNDER, GRACE!

Q: What triggered you to start 8 Fahrenheit? Why
the name 8 Fahrenheit?
A: My friends and I are from the Diploma in Business
and Social Enterprise so it has always been our dream
to start our own social enterprise.
We were given the opportunity to do a project in our
third year so we decided to start an ice-cream shop and
the decision to hire low income students came from
one of the co-founders Joseph.
He is from a low income family. His dad passed away
when he was young so he sold ice cream door to door
to earn an extra income for himself. When he came to
poly, he realized how hard it was to juggle both school
work and working part time to support his family.
Hence, when we decided to open this, we were quite
adamant to hire low income students. Being on
campus, it would be much easier for them to come and
we provide flexible working hours.
We chose the name 8 Fahrenheit as it is the optimum
temperature for serving ice cream.

Q: What kind of marketing strategies do
you use to attract customers?
A: On the first day we started this business,
we gave out coupons, badges and stickers.

I think it was not the right time to release
these marketing tools because people did
not know about us yet. For now, we are
quite fortunate that there is a crowd in
school so we do not really need to focus
much on marketing. But we do hold
contests currently.

In the near future, we may be
implementing new strategies such as
promotional sets as we are coming up with
new products. We may bundle the
products, give promotions and special
promotions during low periods and more.

8
Q: Are there any pricing strategies?
Currently no, because we want to establish our
presence on campus first as there are still a lot of
students who do not know about us. But we did
give promotions before. For example, during NP50
we gave $0.50 discount off all items on a
particular day. We also offered 3 scoops of icecream for $8 on a particular day.

Q: Who is 8 Fahrenheit’s main target
market?
A: Mainly Ngee Ann Poly students but
during school holidays, SIM students as
well, because they come to Ngee Ann poly
to study.
Currently, we are focusing more on
campus rather than the public but we will
see if the opportunity arises.

Q: Does antecedent conditions such
as the weather affect your business?
A: Yes, it does. When it rains, you can
see there is very little crowd. But it is
not like when it is sunny there are a lot
of people, just that when it rains, there
are lesser people who wants to buy ice
cream because it is already so cold.
In the near future, we may be giving out loyalty
cards and laptop stickers. The loyalty card is to
encourage repeated visits such that when
customers spend $2.80, they get one stamp. When
they get 5 stamps then there will be 10% off.
When they get 15 stamps, a free scoop of ice
cream will be given.

Q: Do you have anything to keep your
customers entertained while they wait in the
queue?
A: No, we do not. Usually they would want to
wait for their food but some have asked us to buy
another waffle machine. Unfortunately, we are
only in the first year of our business, we do not
have much resources. All the equipment is
bought from our savings. So we have a really
limited budget to work around.

Q: Are there long queues? Do
customers mind waiting for their
order?
There used to be long queue. Now we do,
but not as long.
No, they do not mind waiting for it
because we give them an estimation of
how long their order will take. If they do
not want to wait, they can walk around
first then come back to collect their food.

Spot our editors with
one of the co-founder of
8 Fahrenheit, Grace!
9
Q: Do you have constant supply of ice-cream?
How many times a week do you have your
supply in?
A: We shuffle our flavours every week. Also, we
have two suppliers so we do not have constant
supply of stocks every week. We will order more
of those flavours that we know will run out faster
and when we have events. Usually, supply comes
every Monday, but when there are events, supply
comes during mid-week.

Q: How do you use social media to reach out
to the students?
Currently we have a Facebook page which is
linked to our Twitter account, so I guess our
Twitter is under-utilized. Also, since our reach
is not very wide, when we have new products,
we release it on Facebook but it does not really
reach the masses so it is something we need to
rectify and work on. We also have an
Instagram account but our posts are very
repetitive because it is an ice cream shop, there
is nothing else to post other than ice-cream, so
it is quite boring. Also, because I am not that
creative.

Q: What kind of external events did you
do?
A: Sometimes we do corporate events such
as for DBS, and the one we did for Istana on
7th July 2013 for the Singapore Youth
Awards. DBS cater our services quite often
as they have always been supportive of
social enterprises so when they have their
social enterprise carnivals, they will call us
down and usually, the booths are free. We
did events for a couple of weddings as well.

Q: How do you plan to advertise other
than using social media?
A: There are quite a lot of limitations in
school. Earlier, we have posters and stuff
pasted around school but we were asked to
take them down. We also wanted to do popup stalls in certain areas of the school
especially those which are further away from
OurSpace. However, all those things requires
a lot of effort and it is difficult to do. We are
not very sure how else to advertise. Maybe
give out stickers, flyers and go down to
Secondary Schools physically. If not it is
very hard to rely on social media to make it
go viral. Unless we have a video or
something.

shot to fame when he was
discovered by Usher from Youtube.

Justin Bieber puts his fame, for good. On many
occasions he surprised adoring fans or sick
children to give them a day to remember. He also
supports many charities and organizes several
charity drives under his name. These are little
bits and pieces of things he do to enlighten

He is one celebrity that gives back to the society as much as he can. This is what

COMMUNITY SERVICE TRIP
Meaningful Community Service
School of Design and Environment
Let’s find out the experiences and valuable lessons learnt by our fellow students from School of Design and
Environment who went for the Community Service Trip such as Cambodia and QiTao!

Alina Chia, Year 2
Diploma in Real Estate Business.

Sarah Neo, Year 2
Diploma in Real Estate Business.

‘‘I went for the Cambodia trip from 14th March 2013
to 26th March 2013. I went for this trip as I wanted to
experience their living culture and also to put myself
to a test. From this trip, I learnt to never take
anything for granted. I will never forget how the kids
share whatever they have. However, there are some
difficulties I faced which was the communication
problem with the kids. There was once where I asked
the kids what were the vegetables cooked for dinner,
but I was unable to understand them. Despite that,
the times I had at Cambodia was as valuable as my
childhood memories, but these memories with the
kids were even better. We bonded through simple
games that we taught them, as well as some games
that they taught us. Unfortunately, I am currently not
in touch with the kids in Cambodia, but I do hope to
go back there again. The most meaningful souvenirs
from Cambodia is the handmade bracelets that the
kids made for me. ’’

‘‘I went for the Cambodia trip from 14th March
2013 to 26th March 2013. I went for this trip as I
wanted to have an experience that was out of
my comfort zone. When I was in Cambodia, I
felt like the kids there were like my siblings I
never had. It was a joy taking care of them.
Though they were much younger than me, I felt
like there was no age gap at all. Also, I was
definitely not used to the sleeping conditions
and environment there. Hence after this trip, I
learnt to appreciate my family members and
what I have more. One interesting incident I
experienced was when my friend got harassed
by a young child who was begging us to buy a
souvenir. The priceless photographs I took at the
orphanage were definitely the most meaningful
thing I brought back to Singapore.’’

18
Jean Hoe
Hotel and Leisure Facilities Management
Year 2
YEP in QiTao, China.
11-24 September 2012

Q: What made you decide to go to the
trip?
A: I wanted to experience the difference in
the pace of life, living conditions and to help
the villagers rebuild their community without
the aid of technology.

Q: What are some interesting incidents you
experienced there?
A: When we showed them Singapore coins,
everyone came and requested us to give them
as a token. The kids there thought that the S$1
coin was made of authentic gold when we
gave them the coin as a prize for answering
one of the quiz given.

Q: What did you learn at QiTao?
A: I learned teamwork, perseverance , how to
take care of ourselves as well as respecting
other countries‘ culture, custom and tradition.

Q: How did you feel when you interacted
with the kids there? What are some
activities carried out?
A: I feel that they are lovely and brilliant.
They learned some basic English and were
able to deliver it fluently.
We were supposed to teach them on basic
Microsoft Words skills but in the end, we
talked about Singapore's food, culture,
education system and everything special about
Singapore such that we overshot the specified
time given to us as we were too engrossed.

19
Q: Are you still keeping in touch with the
kids at QiTao?
A: Unfortunately, I am not keeping in touch
with them due to my heavy academic
schedules and I do not know how to use QQ.

Q: Were there any situations where your
needs or wants could not be fulfilled?
A: There were no such incidents as I knew the
conditions of the village area so I did not
expect much. There was sufficient food and
water for all of us. I was thankful for it and the
lack of social networking did not affect me.

Q: What difficulties did you face there?
A: There was once where we could not find a
can opener to open and cook canned food
despite asking from the school canteen vendor.
It took us a long time before we can get a can
opener.

Q: What are some interesting/meaningful
souvenirs you brought back to SG?
A: The wonderful gifts given by the kids, their
hand-made letters and most importantly, the
awesome memories created in QiTao.

Over at Ngee Ann’s School of Design & Environment(Est. 2012), we have 4 exciting
diplomas under one roof. Let us hear from our students more about each unique course!

Audrey Lim
(HLFM, Year 2)
Why did you choose this course?
I wanted to go business-related courses but my
COP couldn't meet their expectations. So I
figured out this is the closest course relating to
my interest.
What would you like to pursue as your career in
future?
An event planner or working in the spa industry.
Any interesting module(s) that you liked? What
did you learn?
Some interesting modules would be FBV, EPM
& SPA (Spa & Amenities Management) I learnt
that there are actually lots of liquor types and
even know how to make cocktails! As for EPM,
I learnt that it's not easy to plan an event itself
and you have to make sure that you yourself is
"flexible" enough because there will always be
last-min changes during the event. As for SPA, I
learnt how to design a spa, what are the
different types of spa and the treatments they
provide.
Any interesting lecturer(s) or class activity during
your course of study? Share your experiences.
An interesting lecturer would be Mr Ho Nee
Fun. No reasons why, just find that his teaching
and lessons are interesting. An interesting class
activity, is during EPM (Events & Project
management), we are supposed to make a
skyscraper but the lecturer only gave us
uncooked spaghetti and marshmallow to
construct.

Vanessa Tan
(REB, Year 2)
Why did you choose this course?
I would say that my family members in
the real estate industry have been a great
influence for my interest in it. NP is the
only school offering this course so here I
am! Also, real estate is one of the best
form of investment due to the fact that
Singapore has limited land but knowing
what to invest in is not enough, so
choosing this module allows me to learn
more about real estate.
What do you think you would like to
pursue as your career in future?
Property developer, if I have the chance
to be one!
Any interesting module(s) that you liked?
What do you learn?
Advanced Building Technology. How
buildings are constructed from scratch.
Any interesting lecturer(s) or class activity
during your course of study? Share your
experiences.
I would say all the lecturers that have
taught me are interesting in their own
way. They are also really lovely and
helpful people.
Class is always fun with my crazy friends,
Nadia and Praise. When lectures get a
little boring, they're always there to
entertain me!

22
Shahreen Kaspan
(SDE, Year 2)
Why did you choose this course?
I wanted to learn more about
architecture works as I've always wanted
to be a designer and wanted to make an
impact in the construction industry.
Also, my course provides sustainable
knowledge which may come in handy as
the architectural industry is looking for
more sustainable buildings.
What would you like to pursue as your
career in future?
I would like to be an architect and hope
to design one of Singapore's future iconic
buildings.
Any interesting module(s) that you liked?
What did you learn?
I like Sustainable City Planning(SCP)
module and Revit module. SCP actually
teaches me how to plan my work well
and use my land properly. Revit module
is continuous designing module which
enhances my creative thinking and my
different approach when making a
building.
Any interesting lecturer(s) or class
activity during your course of study?
Share your experiences.
Mr Raja is a good lecturer as he cares for
his students and guides us patiently
throughout our learning journey.

Neo Wee Chong
(PDI, Year 3)
Why did you choose this course?
I found design interesting when I
first heard about it. It allows me to
be creative and be unique. Therefore
here I am in this course!
What would you like to pursue as
your career in future?
I hope to pursue my career in the
media industry as that was my
childhood dream.
Any interesting module(s) that you
liked? What did you learn?
PDP (Product Design Project) is an
interesting module as we were able to
learn how to produce a portfolio of
our products and make prototypes!
Any interesting lecturer(s) or class
activity during your course of study?
Share your experiences.
There are many interesting and
hilarious lecturers such as Geoffrey,
Jasmine and Terence. They are strict
lecturers but yet at the same time,
render you help when needed. Fun
activities would be outing trips to
various locations and learn more
about new products by other schools
and also vintage items used by the
older generations!

Want to know how to keep healthy skin? Read on to find out more!
Your skin needs as much of pampering and taking care of as other parts of your body. Your
skin protects you from all harmful bacterial and toxins and that is why taking care of it
makes it even more important! Apart from applying different types of products to your skin,
you can also try out these simple but effective tips as to how to maintain clear skin!

Tip #1: Protect Yourself From The Sun!
Its important to protect your skin from
external damages such as the sun’s rays and
toxic gas emissions from vehicles. Your
skin protects your muscles and bones and
thus by taking precautions and applying
sunscreen, you are in turn protecting
yourself from contracting illnesses easily.
Use a SPF of at least 15 and try not to stay
out in the sun for prolonged hours.

Tip #3: Treat Your Skin With Care!
Don’t be too rough on your skin. It needs to
be treated with the utmost care. Don’t have
too long baths and showers as it will
remove oils. Also, don’t use strong soaps as
it will strip your skin of vital oils. Lastly,
always remember to moisturize your skin
when it feels dry. For daily use, have one
that contains SPF.

Tip #2: Don’t Smoke!
Smoking makes your skin look old and
wrinkled. The smoke blocks the natural
blood flow in your veins and thus
decreasing blood flow. Smoking also
causes your skin to lose strength and
elasticity. Therefore if you want to
maintain healthy and clear skin, quit
smoking! If you need help, approach your
doctor!

Tip #4: Manage Stress
In this hectic life that we all live, we are
bound to have stress in our lives. But its
also important to manage that stress so that
it doesn’t break out in the form of acne on
your skin. Thus, manage your stress by
writing out what you have to do in a ‘ToDo List’ and set realistic deadlines for
them. And stick to them!

Tip #5: Eat A Healthy Diet!
A healthy diet can make you feel good
about yourself. Eat lots of fruits and
vegetables, whole grains and proteins.
Research has shown that a diet in Vitamin
C helps to keep your skin looking young
and feeling soft.

1) How frequent do you shop?
P: About once a month when I feel that I have a lack of clothes.
T: 3 to 4 times a week depending on my mood. Mostly I go shopping after work or when it’s my day off.
Usually shops for clothings.
D: About 4 times a year as I’m not really interested in shopping. Usually, I shop during the Chinese New
Year, end of year and Great Singapore Sales period. These are the times when I usually need new clothes or I
find it more attractive to buy as there are discounts and sales.
LH: About 3 times a weeks for groceries and once a year for fashion.
2) Where do you normally go to?
P: Jurong Point. There are certain stores at JP that sells nice and affordable clothings that are within my
budget. Moreover, there are also air-conditioning and many eateries which can satisfy my cravings when I get
hungry while shopping.
T: Orchard. The things there are nicer and also, there are many different brands available.
D: Usually I just go to the minimart near my house as it is convenient. For fashion goods, there is no specific
location as I like to explore new things/location.
LH: Mostly NTUC and GIANT as I always go shopping for groceries and there is a GIANT located near my
house and I spend around $70 per trip. However, for fashion, I would go to neighbourhood places near my
house.
3) What are the criterias that you focus on?
P: To me, design is the most important, followed by the price. I would look and the designs and see whether I
like it a not before looking at the price to decide whether to buy it. It is of no use if the price is cheap but I
don’t like it at all.
T: 1st: Brand 2nd: Designs 3rd: Quality 4th: Price
Brand is the most important to me because branded goods usually have designs that I like.
D: 1st: Design 2nd: Price 3rd: Brand
Design is the most important as the it have to catch my eye before I will plan to purchase it.
LH: Price most important followed by taste and nutritional level. There are loads of groceries to buy. Hence, it
is important to plan a budget and keep to it.

4) Do you shop online? If yes, do you prefer it to physical shops and why? If not, why?
P: No, I don’t shop online as I don’t really know how to. The procedures are really complicated and I’m
afraid of the credibility.
T: Yes, I do shop online but only rarely. I prefer physical shops because shopping online can be very
troublesome such as the procedures to pay money and it also have long waiting time, while in physical shops,
we can just pay cash and go. Another reason is because there is no quality assurance when shopping online,
while in physical shops, the goods are displayed and we can just feel the quality.
D: No, I don’t even have an interest in shopping so I wouldn’t shop online either.
LH: No I don’t because I don’t understand English and most importantly, I don’t know how to use a
computer.
5) Before buying a product, would you search for information about it? Eg. Research, asking opinions from
your friends etc.
P: Nope. If I like it then I would just buy it. I won’t particularly search for information about it.
T: No, I just buy it if I like it. If not, I won’t buy it.
D: Yes. I will search for more information if I’m going to buy more expensive products such as phones or
laptop. I will either search for more information through Google or ask for my friends’ opinions about it.
LH: Yes. I would get recommendations from my family and friends and also I would compare prices
between different stores and get the one that is cheaper.
6) Do you have instances when you planned what to buy but bought more than what you had planned?
P: Rarely. I would usually plan what I want to buy before I go shopping and will stick to it unless I see
something that I really like or I feel ‘generous’ on that day.
T: Yes, most f the times. Sometimes, I don’t really have anything in mid that I want to buy. However, after
walking around, I would end up buying something.
D: Yes, but rarely. I normally just stick to buying only what I have in mind.
LH: Yes. All the time. When I go to the supermarket with a list of items to buy, I would end up buying more
than what I had on the list because as I walk around, I was reminded to buy some things that I had left out in
the list and not to mention, offers!

Social Media
Influences On
Consumer Behavior
Want to know how social media can influence your thoughts?
Read on to find out more!

38
Why?
Numerous number of people today are signing up for
social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Word of mouth is a very strong marketing tool and
these sites are able to spread the word like a wild fire.
That is why they are one of the strongest marketing
tools that are available free of cost. Marketers then
use social media to their advantage. They are able to
interact and keep in touch with their consumers as
well as keep them updated on the latest news in their
company.

Previously, sales were conducted using
publicity materials such as brochures, flyers
and word of mouth. However, that was in the
past. Now, sales are conducted online through
blogs and other websites which helps in
increasing sales. Sites such as Facebook and
Instagram help to promote online shopping
and also to advertise and influence consumers
to purchase from shops . Thus, consumer
behaviour is greatly influenced by social
media.

Many companies have their own websites providing consumers information about their
company. But due to the fact that teenagers nowadays are very tech savvy, marketers need
to be careful of what they present to their consumers as teens can find out everything that
has happened to that company within minutes. They would read blogs and reviews that
other previous consumers have written before they actually go and purchase that product.
For example, if you are going to go to a certain restaurant for dinner, you would definitely
find out about what they offer first and read all their reviews and comments. And if the
reviews are bad, you would change the restaurant. Thus, the impact of the internet in
consumers lives is very large because they would believe what they read and it would, as a
result, influence their thinking process.

39
Some sites that really affect consumer behavior are STOMP and
review sites such as Lady Iron Chef. Some examples of how these
two websites deter or attract customers.

Stomp: Rats found in Thai Express
Outlet at Esplanade Mall
In an earlier article, the STOMPer had found a large
housefly in her soup while dining in that restaurant. When
she mentioned it to staff there however, they had ignored
her complaint.
A spokesperson for NEA wrote:
"Our officers inspected the restaurant located at #01-13D
of Esplanade Mall. Although flies were not observed in the
premises, signs of rat infestation were detected.”

Lady Iron Chef’s Take on the New
Restaurant Jamie’s Italian at Vivo City
As with all the Jamie’s Italian restaurants around the
world, the menu is extensive, with offerings of antipasti,
pasta and risotto dishes, and main courses that are hearty
and rustic.
What we really loved were the Tiramisu (S$11.50) and
Panna Cotta (S$9). The former – a strong and intense
coffee-flavoured triffle with orange mascarpone and
chocolate, and the latter – a simple and well-made dessert
which is rich and creamy yet not overly sweet, exactly
how a good panna cotta should be. We dare say it is one of
the better renditions in town.

So as you can see, through theses sites, teenagers are now able to look up any incident
that has happened to that particular restaurant or shop outlet before making a
decision to dine at that place or purchase anything from there. Both sites show the
two extremes of each situation, the bad side in STOMP and the good side in Lady
Iron Chef’s blog. So, it is important for the marketers of the place to have a good PR
in order to recover from bad publicity and also to maintain a positive image in the
public. And this is how these social media sites influence your thoughts!

What you will need : Glass jar, superglue, glitter(or small pieces of aluminum foil),
baby oil, Christmas figurine, scissors, needle, thread, stars(or any other decorative
object).
Optional items: Christmas garlands or ribbons.

Step 1:
Thread your needle and tie a
knot at the end.

Step 2:
Poke the needle through the
star (or any other decorative
object).

Step 3:
Pull the thread until it stops at
the knot and make several of
it at different lengths.

Step 5:
Place a generous amount of
glue to the centre of the jar
lid. Put the figurine on the
glue while it is still wet.

Step 4:
Glue the threads with the stars
to the base of the jar.

Step 6:
Sprinkle glitter in the jar.

44
Step 7:
Fill the jar with baby oil. Baby oil is preferred
than water as it allows the glitter to flow down
slowly to the bottom of the jar compared to
water.

Step 8:
Put glue around the edge of the jar lid as well as
at the edge of the jar. Then quickly put the lid on
the jar before the glue dries up.

Step 9(optional):
Put more glue around the outer area of the lid to
add more decorations (such as Christmas
garlands) to cover up the lid.

Step 10(optional):
Put more glue at the other end of the jar to add
more decorations.

You may try with other types of jars and figurines as well!
What you will need : Tape, paper plates/palette (or any other material to place your
paint), acrylic paint(white, navy, blue, light blue, light pink, purple), brushes,
sponges.
Step 1 :
Take out the shoelaces to prevent it from
getting dirty. Use tape to cover the soles of the
shoes to prevent paint from getting on it.

Step 2:
Use sponge to apply navy paint and dab on the
shoes wherever you prefer. Then use blue paint to
dab around the navy paint and blend it together
to give a fading effect.
*Note: Do not use too much paint when dabbing.

Step 3:
Use purple paint to dab next to the navy
paint. Dab it in any way you want it to be.

46
Step4:
Use light purple paint to blend among the navy
and purple paint however you want it, to give it
a cloudy effect. It does not have to look neat.

Step5:
Continue to blend from darker paint to light
paint such as navy paint next to the purple
paint, then blue paint next to navy paint, or any
way you prefer. The point of this is to blend it
however you want to, according to your
preference. Do not worry if it does not look
presentable now, it will at the end!

Step6:
Use sponge to apply white paint and blend it
around the areas where you have applied light
blue paint. Then use light pink paint to blend
around the white paint.

Step7:
Apply white paint on a toothbrush then use the toothbrush to splatter bits of white paint here and
there by brushing your finger through the bristles of the toothbrush with the toothbrush facing the
shoe. (Do not worry if you think you messed up and get splatters that you do not like, it will not
be obvious)

Step8(optional):
Use a thin brush to make multiple dots on the shoes to make it look like clusters of stars. You can
draw as many clusters as you want on the shoes. Lastly, draw an asterisk in the middle of the
clusters of stars. After you are done, just leave it to dry for thirty minutes.

Read on to find out your
love compatibility! <3
Try to push back your own concerns a bit as you have some friends
who need you now. If you can defer gratification for a bit longer,
you should be able to score some great karma
Love Compatibility: Libra
March 21-April 20
Pay closer attention to your health. You may not be able to fix
everything, but there is almost certainly one little tweak you can make
that should make you feel a lot better in the long run
Love Compatibility: Scorpio
April 21-May 21
Your big smile is a beacon to others and you are having too much fun to
rest. Your mental and social energies are in perfect sync and someone
new shows up at the right time.
Love Compatibility: Sagittarius
May 22-June 21
Your activity levels are heightened, though your mood may not be. It is
time to slog through all the work you have been putting off before you
can have fun.
Love Compatibility: Capricon
June 22-July 22
Open up your heart. You need to share some feelings with someone
who may be drifting away from you. That may not change, but honesty
cannot hurt on a day like today. Go for it.
Love Compatibility: Aquarius
July 23-Aug 22
You and your friend are buying into something big together. It may not
involve money – it could be a new way of looking at things or
something spiritual – but you need to keep at it.
Love Compatibility: Pisces
Aug 23-Sept 22
You get good news in the morning and almost nothing can dampen our
sprits. Even the worst news you get feels somehow natural or part of a
much bigger, better picture.
Love Compatibility: Aries
Sept 23-Oct 23
You need to let someone else win today, otherwise things will get
really difficult. Your energy is building up to something big, but it just
has not hit the right spot yet.
Love Compatibility: Taurus
Oct 24-Nov 21
Speak up today. If you do not tell the world what you want, there is no
way for the right people to guess your social energy is well balanced now,
so it should not be hard to open up.
Love Compatibility: Gemini
Nov 22-Dec 20
Your cultural leanings are enriching your life and the lives around you.
Some stray comment you make today changes a life for the better. You
may never fully realize what happened.
Love Compatibility: Cancer
Dec 21-Jan 20
You need to reach out to someone in need. It may be a family member
or someone tearing up on the bus, but you have to challenge yourself to
overcome social barriers.
Love Compatibility: Leo

Feb 20-March 21

Jan 21-Feb 19

It may be a good time to forget a debt, especially if it is from a kid or
some other relative. That does not just mean wiping away the financial
burden but pretending it never even happened.
Love Compatibility: Virgo

  • 8. 8 Fahrenheit FIND OUT MORE ABOUT 8 FAHRENHEIT THROUGH THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF THEIR CO-FOUNDER, GRACE! Q: What triggered you to start 8 Fahrenheit? Why the name 8 Fahrenheit? A: My friends and I are from the Diploma in Business and Social Enterprise so it has always been our dream to start our own social enterprise. We were given the opportunity to do a project in our third year so we decided to start an ice-cream shop and the decision to hire low income students came from one of the co-founders Joseph. He is from a low income family. His dad passed away when he was young so he sold ice cream door to door to earn an extra income for himself. When he came to poly, he realized how hard it was to juggle both school work and working part time to support his family. Hence, when we decided to open this, we were quite adamant to hire low income students. Being on campus, it would be much easier for them to come and we provide flexible working hours. We chose the name 8 Fahrenheit as it is the optimum temperature for serving ice cream. Q: What kind of marketing strategies do you use to attract customers? A: On the first day we started this business, we gave out coupons, badges and stickers. I think it was not the right time to release these marketing tools because people did not know about us yet. For now, we are quite fortunate that there is a crowd in school so we do not really need to focus much on marketing. But we do hold contests currently. In the near future, we may be implementing new strategies such as promotional sets as we are coming up with new products. We may bundle the products, give promotions and special promotions during low periods and more. 8
  • 9. Q: Are there any pricing strategies? Currently no, because we want to establish our presence on campus first as there are still a lot of students who do not know about us. But we did give promotions before. For example, during NP50 we gave $0.50 discount off all items on a particular day. We also offered 3 scoops of icecream for $8 on a particular day. Q: Who is 8 Fahrenheit’s main target market? A: Mainly Ngee Ann Poly students but during school holidays, SIM students as well, because they come to Ngee Ann poly to study. Currently, we are focusing more on campus rather than the public but we will see if the opportunity arises. Q: Does antecedent conditions such as the weather affect your business? A: Yes, it does. When it rains, you can see there is very little crowd. But it is not like when it is sunny there are a lot of people, just that when it rains, there are lesser people who wants to buy ice cream because it is already so cold. In the near future, we may be giving out loyalty cards and laptop stickers. The loyalty card is to encourage repeated visits such that when customers spend $2.80, they get one stamp. When they get 5 stamps then there will be 10% off. When they get 15 stamps, a free scoop of ice cream will be given. Q: Do you have anything to keep your customers entertained while they wait in the queue? A: No, we do not. Usually they would want to wait for their food but some have asked us to buy another waffle machine. Unfortunately, we are only in the first year of our business, we do not have much resources. All the equipment is bought from our savings. So we have a really limited budget to work around. Q: Are there long queues? Do customers mind waiting for their order? There used to be long queue. Now we do, but not as long. No, they do not mind waiting for it because we give them an estimation of how long their order will take. If they do not want to wait, they can walk around first then come back to collect their food. Spot our editors with one of the co-founder of 8 Fahrenheit, Grace! 9
  • 10. Q: Do you have constant supply of ice-cream? How many times a week do you have your supply in? A: We shuffle our flavours every week. Also, we have two suppliers so we do not have constant supply of stocks every week. We will order more of those flavours that we know will run out faster and when we have events. Usually, supply comes every Monday, but when there are events, supply comes during mid-week. Q: How do you use social media to reach out to the students? Currently we have a Facebook page which is linked to our Twitter account, so I guess our Twitter is under-utilized. Also, since our reach is not very wide, when we have new products, we release it on Facebook but it does not really reach the masses so it is something we need to rectify and work on. We also have an Instagram account but our posts are very repetitive because it is an ice cream shop, there is nothing else to post other than ice-cream, so it is quite boring. Also, because I am not that creative. Q: What kind of external events did you do? A: Sometimes we do corporate events such as for DBS, and the one we did for Istana on 7th July 2013 for the Singapore Youth Awards. DBS cater our services quite often as they have always been supportive of social enterprises so when they have their social enterprise carnivals, they will call us down and usually, the booths are free. We did events for a couple of weddings as well. Q: How do you plan to advertise other than using social media? A: There are quite a lot of limitations in school. Earlier, we have posters and stuff pasted around school but we were asked to take them down. We also wanted to do popup stalls in certain areas of the school especially those which are further away from OurSpace. However, all those things requires a lot of effort and it is difficult to do. We are not very sure how else to advertise. Maybe give out stickers, flyers and go down to Secondary Schools physically. If not it is very hard to rely on social media to make it go viral. Unless we have a video or something. 10

  • 18. Meaningful Community Service School of Design and Environment Let’s find out the experiences and valuable lessons learnt by our fellow students from School of Design and Environment who went for the Community Service Trip such as Cambodia and QiTao! Alina Chia, Year 2 Diploma in Real Estate Business. Sarah Neo, Year 2 Diploma in Real Estate Business. ‘‘I went for the Cambodia trip from 14th March 2013 to 26th March 2013. I went for this trip as I wanted to experience their living culture and also to put myself to a test. From this trip, I learnt to never take anything for granted. I will never forget how the kids share whatever they have. However, there are some difficulties I faced which was the communication problem with the kids. There was once where I asked the kids what were the vegetables cooked for dinner, but I was unable to understand them. Despite that, the times I had at Cambodia was as valuable as my childhood memories, but these memories with the kids were even better. We bonded through simple games that we taught them, as well as some games that they taught us. Unfortunately, I am currently not in touch with the kids in Cambodia, but I do hope to go back there again. The most meaningful souvenirs from Cambodia is the handmade bracelets that the kids made for me. ’’ ‘‘I went for the Cambodia trip from 14th March 2013 to 26th March 2013. I went for this trip as I wanted to have an experience that was out of my comfort zone. When I was in Cambodia, I felt like the kids there were like my siblings I never had. It was a joy taking care of them. Though they were much younger than me, I felt like there was no age gap at all. Also, I was definitely not used to the sleeping conditions and environment there. Hence after this trip, I learnt to appreciate my family members and what I have more. One interesting incident I experienced was when my friend got harassed by a young child who was begging us to buy a souvenir. The priceless photographs I took at the orphanage were definitely the most meaningful thing I brought back to Singapore.’’ 18
  • 19. Jean Hoe Hotel and Leisure Facilities Management Year 2 YEP in QiTao, China. 11-24 September 2012 Q: What made you decide to go to the trip? A: I wanted to experience the difference in the pace of life, living conditions and to help the villagers rebuild their community without the aid of technology. Q: What are some interesting incidents you experienced there? A: When we showed them Singapore coins, everyone came and requested us to give them as a token. The kids there thought that the S$1 coin was made of authentic gold when we gave them the coin as a prize for answering one of the quiz given. Q: What did you learn at QiTao? A: I learned teamwork, perseverance , how to take care of ourselves as well as respecting other countries‘ culture, custom and tradition. Q: How did you feel when you interacted with the kids there? What are some activities carried out? A: I feel that they are lovely and brilliant. They learned some basic English and were able to deliver it fluently. We were supposed to teach them on basic Microsoft Words skills but in the end, we talked about Singapore's food, culture, education system and everything special about Singapore such that we overshot the specified time given to us as we were too engrossed. 19
  • 20. Q: Are you still keeping in touch with the kids at QiTao? A: Unfortunately, I am not keeping in touch with them due to my heavy academic schedules and I do not know how to use QQ. Q: Were there any situations where your needs or wants could not be fulfilled? A: There were no such incidents as I knew the conditions of the village area so I did not expect much. There was sufficient food and water for all of us. I was thankful for it and the lack of social networking did not affect me. Q: What difficulties did you face there? A: There was once where we could not find a can opener to open and cook canned food despite asking from the school canteen vendor. It took us a long time before we can get a can opener. Q: What are some interesting/meaningful souvenirs you brought back to SG? A: The wonderful gifts given by the kids, their hand-made letters and most importantly, the awesome memories created in QiTao.

  • 34. 4) Do you shop online? If yes, do you prefer it to physical shops and why? If not, why? P: No, I don’t shop online as I don’t really know how to. The procedures are really complicated and I’m afraid of the credibility. T: Yes, I do shop online but only rarely. I prefer physical shops because shopping online can be very troublesome such as the procedures to pay money and it also have long waiting time, while in physical shops, we can just pay cash and go. Another reason is because there is no quality assurance when shopping online, while in physical shops, the goods are displayed and we can just feel the quality. D: No, I don’t even have an interest in shopping so I wouldn’t shop online either. LH: No I don’t because I don’t understand English and most importantly, I don’t know how to use a computer. 5) Before buying a product, would you search for information about it? Eg. Research, asking opinions from your friends etc. P: Nope. If I like it then I would just buy it. I won’t particularly search for information about it. T: No, I just buy it if I like it. If not, I won’t buy it. D: Yes. I will search for more information if I’m going to buy more expensive products such as phones or laptop. I will either search for more information through Google or ask for my friends’ opinions about it. LH: Yes. I would get recommendations from my family and friends and also I would compare prices between different stores and get the one that is cheaper. 6) Do you have instances when you planned what to buy but bought more than what you had planned? P: Rarely. I would usually plan what I want to buy before I go shopping and will stick to it unless I see something that I really like or I feel ‘generous’ on that day. T: Yes, most f the times. Sometimes, I don’t really have anything in mid that I want to buy. However, after walking around, I would end up buying something. D: Yes, but rarely. I normally just stick to buying only what I have in mind. LH: Yes. All the time. When I go to the supermarket with a list of items to buy, I would end up buying more than what I had on the list because as I walk around, I was reminded to buy some things that I had left out in the list and not to mention, offers! • • • • • • • • Planned Purchases Buys when needs it Design most important Prefer physical shops Planned Purchases Buys when needs it Design most important Prefer physical shops • • • • • • • • Unplanned Purchases “Likes and Buy” Brand most important Prefer physical shops Reminded Purchases Buys when there is offer Price most important Prefer physical shops 34

  • 38. Social Media Influences On Consumer Behavior Want to know how social media can influence your thoughts? Read on to find out more! 38
  • 39. Why? Numerous number of people today are signing up for social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Word of mouth is a very strong marketing tool and these sites are able to spread the word like a wild fire. That is why they are one of the strongest marketing tools that are available free of cost. Marketers then use social media to their advantage. They are able to interact and keep in touch with their consumers as well as keep them updated on the latest news in their company. Previously, sales were conducted using publicity materials such as brochures, flyers and word of mouth. However, that was in the past. Now, sales are conducted online through blogs and other websites which helps in increasing sales. Sites such as Facebook and Instagram help to promote online shopping and also to advertise and influence consumers to purchase from shops . Thus, consumer behaviour is greatly influenced by social media. Many companies have their own websites providing consumers information about their company. But due to the fact that teenagers nowadays are very tech savvy, marketers need to be careful of what they present to their consumers as teens can find out everything that has happened to that company within minutes. They would read blogs and reviews that other previous consumers have written before they actually go and purchase that product. For example, if you are going to go to a certain restaurant for dinner, you would definitely find out about what they offer first and read all their reviews and comments. And if the reviews are bad, you would change the restaurant. Thus, the impact of the internet in consumers lives is very large because they would believe what they read and it would, as a result, influence their thinking process. 39
  • 40. Some sites that really affect consumer behavior are STOMP and review sites such as Lady Iron Chef. Some examples of how these two websites deter or attract customers. Stomp: Rats found in Thai Express Outlet at Esplanade Mall In an earlier article, the STOMPer had found a large housefly in her soup while dining in that restaurant. When she mentioned it to staff there however, they had ignored her complaint. A spokesperson for NEA wrote: "Our officers inspected the restaurant located at #01-13D of Esplanade Mall. Although flies were not observed in the premises, signs of rat infestation were detected.” Lady Iron Chef’s Take on the New Restaurant Jamie’s Italian at Vivo City As with all the Jamie’s Italian restaurants around the world, the menu is extensive, with offerings of antipasti, pasta and risotto dishes, and main courses that are hearty and rustic. What we really loved were the Tiramisu (S$11.50) and Panna Cotta (S$9). The former – a strong and intense coffee-flavoured triffle with orange mascarpone and chocolate, and the latter – a simple and well-made dessert which is rich and creamy yet not overly sweet, exactly how a good panna cotta should be. We dare say it is one of the better renditions in town. So as you can see, through theses sites, teenagers are now able to look up any incident that has happened to that particular restaurant or shop outlet before making a decision to dine at that place or purchase anything from there. Both sites show the two extremes of each situation, the bad side in STOMP and the good side in Lady Iron Chef’s blog. So, it is important for the marketers of the place to have a good PR in order to recover from bad publicity and also to maintain a positive image in the public. And this is how these social media sites influence your thoughts! 40

  • 45. Step 7: Fill the jar with baby oil. Baby oil is preferred than water as it allows the glitter to flow down slowly to the bottom of the jar compared to water. Step 8: Put glue around the edge of the jar lid as well as at the edge of the jar. Then quickly put the lid on the jar before the glue dries up. Step 9(optional): Put more glue around the outer area of the lid to add more decorations (such as Christmas garlands) to cover up the lid. Step 10(optional): Put more glue at the other end of the jar to add more decorations. You may try with other types of jars and figurines as well!
  • 46. What you will need : Tape, paper plates/palette (or any other material to place your paint), acrylic paint(white, navy, blue, light blue, light pink, purple), brushes, sponges. Step 1 : Take out the shoelaces to prevent it from getting dirty. Use tape to cover the soles of the shoes to prevent paint from getting on it. Step 2: Use sponge to apply navy paint and dab on the shoes wherever you prefer. Then use blue paint to dab around the navy paint and blend it together to give a fading effect. *Note: Do not use too much paint when dabbing. Step 3: Use purple paint to dab next to the navy paint. Dab it in any way you want it to be. 46
  • 47. Step4: Use light purple paint to blend among the navy and purple paint however you want it, to give it a cloudy effect. It does not have to look neat. Step5: Continue to blend from darker paint to light paint such as navy paint next to the purple paint, then blue paint next to navy paint, or any way you prefer. The point of this is to blend it however you want to, according to your preference. Do not worry if it does not look presentable now, it will at the end! Step6: Use sponge to apply white paint and blend it around the areas where you have applied light blue paint. Then use light pink paint to blend around the white paint. Step7: Apply white paint on a toothbrush then use the toothbrush to splatter bits of white paint here and there by brushing your finger through the bristles of the toothbrush with the toothbrush facing the shoe. (Do not worry if you think you messed up and get splatters that you do not like, it will not be obvious) Step8(optional): Use a thin brush to make multiple dots on the shoes to make it look like clusters of stars. You can draw as many clusters as you want on the shoes. Lastly, draw an asterisk in the middle of the clusters of stars. After you are done, just leave it to dry for thirty minutes.
