Technology and the English Language Learner By Group E: Georgia Gum, Michelle Ricca and Jeanette Delgado.
Main Concepts Tools to aid ELL Students Techniques for clearly communicating information regarding technology Activities to fit the needs of ELL Students Software, Rubrics and Lessons designed especially for ELL Students
I. Specific examples of house deceives such as scanners, digital cameras, and or video cameras can be used with computer systems and software for math and science. A. You could use a diagram off the internet and scan them onto worksheets so that bilingual students could see the picture and understand what the words mean for math. B. For a science project they can record themselves during class doing the experiment so that later on if they don’t understand the directions for the follow-up they can goback to their experiment and go over what they did in class. C. A cool thing to do with a digital camera is to take pictures of different shapes at your house, the park, or school to understand that math is everywhere.
II. Specific examples of how technology can be used in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and or solving problems for your topic. A. A cool thing to do would be to skype with another classroom in a different country so that they can help you explain some subjects in your own language. B. Also being in groups with kids of the same language might help you understand things a lot easier. C. Doing some research might help you solve some problems because you could probably find something in your language.
III. Specific examples of how to use productivity tools for word processing, database management, and spreadsheet applications for your topic A. A great way for the entire class to have all the directions in English and their other language would be to write them out on a word processing document. B. The great thing about databases are that you are able to find anything about any subject or any language C. If you need to do some math problems you could use a spreadsheet because they have some cool way to add and subtract for the totals.
IV. Specific examples of how to use multimedia tools for your topic. A. A great thing to use are songs in Spanish and English to learn about math, like a song with all the shapes. B. Also a great thing to do could be getting cd’s that are in Spanish and English and doing those games for activities. C. A fun thing to help students with their spelling is to get a disk where everone can have so that when they go to put it in you can hear all the works in English and Spanish.
