Themed Images By Giorgio Frattolillo
Artist Research This is 2 different photographs by Juan Felipe Rubio, taken from the series ‘ Love Scene Between Anonymous Couple.’ All of the photos above have something in common, they have the lower part of the body at the bottom, the torso in the middle and the head at the top. Also, there are shots which are the same as other shots, but just closer up. This is shown by the photograph on the left, with the 2 images in the top 2 photos in the left hand corner. The mood in these photos is very positive, due to the use of bright, vivid colours within the image. The actions of the models in the photography also makes the scene very positive, as they are showing love for eachother.
Artist Research This is a photograph by David Hilliard, entitled ‘In Pursuit Of Other Things.’ The mood and atmosphere is the complete opposite to Juan Felipe Rubio’s photos. This is a very negative, dark scene where instead of looking happy, the model’s pose makes him look very depressed or upset. The view of the photo is a panoramic, as it has perspective across the room. This can also be due to the angle in which each shot is taken, every shot is taken from a different angle of the room, which gives the panoramic effect. The colours in the room are very dark, and the scene seems gloomy due to the harsh shadows on the floor and around the model.
Artist Research This is David Hilliard's photo, entitled ‘Ponchos.’ The atmosphere in this photograph is very mysterious. The lady is looking in the direction of the camera but at the floor, and the poncho hood makes the face hidden and masked to the viewer, which makes you wonder why they are there. Also, it looks like it is not raining, or that it hasn’t recently been raining, which also makes you want to know why they are walking through the forest in ponchos when it is not raining. The scene is taken with perspective, as the panels of wood in the shed are going into the distance, and also the people are walking into the distance, making the mysterious feeling about the photo even stronger, because you then want to know where they are going. The building in which the lady is walking into looks as if it is abandoned, as it is in the middle of a forest and the door looks old and eroded. The colours in this photo are mainly very dark, and there isn't that much light in the different scenes.
Artist Research This is a portrait of Henry Moore, by David Hockney. The arrangement of the images in this piece creates a very abstract looking portrait of the figure, due to the multiple shots of the face and hands. The positioning of the photos of the legs also contributes to the illusional effect that the photo gives to the viewer. The mood in this photo is also very drained, as the features of the ageing on the man are very visible , and you can tell that his posture isn't strong, which shoes a sign of ageing and oldness. The atmosphere within the photo, is very dark, and gloomy, using only natural light from the windows. The depth of field used keeps the focus on Henry Moore, which also brings out the detail in his fragile skin. The picture is made of 24 different sections, and I think that using different angle shots and muddling them up a bit to create the abstract shape of the figure works really well. It almost looks as if you are looking through rippling water at Henry Moore, due to the distortion of the image and the repeated parts of his body. The light also effects this photo, as some parts of the photo are lighter the others, but they are a photo of the same features (E.G. the face), and this also effects how we see the photo, and how long it takes us to figure out what the photo is of, as it gives an even further aspect of illusion.
Artist Research This is a selection of photos by Lee Summers. Taken from his collection called ‘Portrait Triptych Series.’ Each set of photos is made of 3 different photos, all of different people, but they are doing the same poses and the photos have been taken of the same parts of their bodies. Again, this set of photos gives a very mysterious atmosphere to the viewer, and it makes you think a lot about what the photo is trying to achieve and why it has been put together like this. The mood of the photo is very neutral, due to the emotionless expressions on the models faces. The lighting used in this photo seems to be natural, it could maybe have a few soft boxes or area lights to stop too many sharp shadows across the facial area, so the neutral expressions are clarified. I Think That Lee Summers was trying to get the viewer to think what all of these poses might mean and what he is trying to achieve by arranging them in this format.

Final Composition and what I did in the edit. Here is my final composition of these images. In the editing process, I was trying to create an abstract, distorted figure which gave the viewer a slight illusion, due to the oversized body parts and the repeated bits of clothing and limbs. I think that this photo turned out quite well, due to the fact that it did create an illuisional look when it was arranged. The black eye was just an experiment, using the burn tool in Photoshop CS5., and I have decided to leave it as it is, as it makes the viewer wonder why he has a random black eye with oversized body parts. If I were to take this again, I would have taken the shoot outside, or have used another light to light the left side of the models body, as there was a window on the right side (from our perspective). I would also have taken more photos, from more angles, to create more of an abstract perspective to the photo. I would have taken more photos of the background too, so I could create a better, more effective background which contrasts with the image. I would relate this photo to the photograph entitled ‘ Portrait of Henry Moore ’. I would choose this photo because the photo inspired me in the first place, (shown by the hand on the models stomach) I took this idea from the portrait of Henry Moore as I really liked the abstract illusional effect that it gave me when I first viewed it.
Photoshoot #2 Contact Sheet
Final Composition and what I did in the edit. This is my final shoot of the common room at school. In this shoot I decided to take 34 shots of the common room, moving the camera slightly to the right every time. In the editing process, I put all of the photos together, lining them up as well as I could, to create the wide angle view of the common room. I also used the levels tool in Photoshop to try and match the light in each individual photo, as they were all different – which is something that I would change if I did this shoot again, I would have used a manual setting on the camera so I could change the light sensitivity of the lens, so that the brightness of the shots were more consecutive. I would relate this piece of work to the photographer David Hilliard. I would relate it to Hilliard’s photo ‘Ponchos’ rather than ‘In Pursuit Of Other Things’ because it contains more than one figure, and they are also walking out of the frame of the photograph. Although, the mood, light, and the atmosphere is not the same (the complete opposite in fact) and also the locations are completely different, the panoramic style still gives the same effect to the overall photo, as you are wondering where the people are going.

Final Composition and what I did in the edit. (NO.1) This is 9 photos put together, of a tree. Each part of the photo is of a different part of the tree, and I got the idea to do this from the photographer Juan Felipe Rubio, as he takes many different photos of one scene, and then puts them together to create a distorted and abstract final image, which makes you think before you realise what it is. In the edit, I have put all of the photos together, leaving all of them the original size, and put them together, with the white lines between to split up the picture a little. I also desaturated the image and increased the contrast by using the curves adjustment in Photoshop.
Final Composition and what I did in the edit. (NO.2) This is a panorama shot of a field near my house. I took 12 photos of different parts of the landscape, and put them together in Photoshop CS5. I then increased the contrast of the photo, flattened it and used HDR toning to make the colours in the photo more vibrant. I really like the contrast between the field and the sky, and I think that the pylon also makes the photo have more of a story behind it, it is very random, as you wouldn't usually find a pylon in the middle of a field. I would relate this photograph to David Hilliard, because of the landscape style panorama with a mysterious atmosphere to it. If I was going to retake this Photo shoot, I would maybe try and wait for the sky to be more clear, and also take more photographs of the sky.

Themed images

  • 1. Themed Images By Giorgio Frattolillo
