The poem "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allen Poe is about a young maiden named Annabel Lee who lived with no other thought but to love the narrator. They loved each other deeply in their kingdom by the sea. However, Annabel Lee died when a wind blew out of a cloud one night, chilling and killing her. The narrator believes this was because of the jealousy of the angels in heaven who envied the love between Annabel Lee and the narrator.
8. Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other
thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than
loveI and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
9. And this was the reason that, long
ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in
heaven,
Went envying her and meYes!- that was the reason (as all men
know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud
by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

10. Why do authors use repetition?
•Stresses something important!
•Creates mood.
•Helps the reader know the
character better.
•Creates rhythm.

12. ..and a couple more examples…
I was glad it was raining so hard, because it made it easy to cry. I
cried and cried and cried, and the whole time I was calling for
Winn-Dixie.
“Winn-Dixie,” I screamed.
“Winn-Dixie,” the preacher shouted. And then he whistled loud
and long. But Winn-Dixie didn’t show up.
All of a sudden it was hard for me to talk. I loved the
preacher so much. I loved him because he loved
Winn-Dixie. I loved him because he was going to
forgive Winn-Dixie for being afraid. But most of all, I
loved him for putting his arm around Winn-Dixie like
that, like he was already trying to keep him safe.
