Abstract
Making the Right Storage Choice for your Virtualized
Server Environment

Learn about the IBM Storwize V7000 disk system and how it
can provide better storage performance, utilization and
productivity in a virtualized server environment such as
VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V. Integrating storage efficiency
techniques, including thin provisioning and automated data
tiering, can provide dramatic benefits to your business.

Built-In Advanced Functions

With IBM Storwize V7000, many functions are
included at no additional charge that you would pay
               for otherwise
                   – Thin provisioning - storage is not allocated until
data is written for higher disk utilization
                   – Local replication - full copy or thin provisioned
replicas (snapshots) of volumes offloads server
                     resources from hypervisor hosts
                   – Easy Tier™ - automated tiering between SSD
                     and HDD storage
                   – Non-disruptive data migration within and
                     between internal and external storage

Volume Mirroring

• IBM Storwize V7000 can store two copies of a volume on separate storage
  pools
  – Storwize V7000 writes to both copies in sync
• If disk supporting one copy fails, Storwize V7000 provides continuous data
  access by using other copy
  – Copies are automatically resynchronized after repair
• A local high availability function to protect critical data against system failure
• Either copy can be split off to be used as production copy
• Copies may be thin-provisioned, enabling thick-to-thin conversions

                                                                                       14

Notes:
Performance is in Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will
experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed.
Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here.
IBM hardware products are manufactured from new parts, or new and serviceable used parts. Regardless, our warranty terms apply.
All customer examples cited or described in this presentation are presented as illustrations of the manner in which some customers have used IBM products and the results they may have achieved. Actual
environmental costs and performance characteristics will vary depending on individual customer configurations and conditions.

  • 15. Volume Mirroring • IBM Storwize V7000 can store two copies of a volume on separate storage pools – Storwize V7000 writes to both copies in sync • If disk supporting one copy fails, Storwize V7000 provides continuous data access by using other copy – Copies are automatically resynchronized after repair • A local high availability function to protect critical data against system failure • Either copy can be split off to be used as production copy • Copies may be thin-provisioned, enabling thick-to-thin conversions 14
  • 16. Extended Distance Mirroring Metro Mirror (synchronous) Global Mirror (asynchronous) • Up to 300km between sites • Up to 8000km distance • Host waits until data stored at • Host does not wait, reduces both locations impact to application • Designed to maintain identical • Designed to maintain consistent secondary copy secondary copy Provides support for VMware Site Recovery Manager, PowerHA, and Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Replication (TPC-R) 15
