1. Things to do in Singapore
Eating Out
To get a flavour of what the locals eat, try some food at a Hawker Centre.
Lau Pa Sat Festival Market,18 Raffles Quay is a well-known Hawker Centre that is frequented
by locals. You can try some local dishes such as Chicken Rice, Satay or some Fish Head Curry if
being adventurous.
East Coast Seafood Centre – Singapore is famous for its Chilli Crab and East Coast Seafood
Centre is the best place to go for crab, seafood, a view of the water and a nice cooling sea
breeze. It is probably best to go for dinner and enjoy a table outside. There are lots of different
places to eat, so take your pick.
Hyatt – Mezza9 Champagne Brunch on a Sunday, if you are around on a Sunday and want to
indulge yourself (and eat some good food!) Try the Champagne Brunch at Mezza9 restaurant in
the Hyatt. It is free champagne whilst you eat foods from all over the world, including Asian,
Italian, Carvery, breads, cheeses etc… It costs $98 each and you can eat as much as you want
from 11.30 til 3pm (and drink as much champagne). The food is very nice and the desserts are
great. You may need to book depending on the weekend. The number is +65 6416 7189
Attractions
Zoo - lots of animals! Singapore zoo is supposed to be one of the best in the world.
Night Safari – a tram takes you around a safari trail seeing animals at night in their natural
habitat.
Sentosa – You can catch the cable cars from Harbour Front, over to Sentosa and get a pretty
view of Singapore. Sentosa has lots of attractions and you can buy a package deal of things to do
including the aquarium, rides, butterfly park, dolphin show etc. or you can choose to do your own
thing and wander around or catch the buses around the island. There are beaches you can swim
in, bars and restaurants and it feels a bit like an island getaway.
Places to visit
Little India – it is an interesting walk down Serangoon Street with lots of Indian stalls and loads
of Indian restaurants. There are also some Indian temples to see.
Chinatown – Night Markets are a great place to get any cheap souvenirs, especially at the “3 for
$10” shops.
Shopping
Most shopping centres are open daily 10am til 9pm
Raffles city is a big shopping complex in the heart of Singapore. It is alo right near Raffles Hotel,
if your feet get tired and you need a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar.
Orchard Road is a street lined with shopping centres! It has all sorts of stores from cheap to very
expensive (Prada etc). Takashimaya at Ngee Ann City is just one shopping centre on Orchard
Road, it is a huge shopping centre with a variety of stores. If you cant pronounce it – you can just
tell the taxi driver to take you to the Japanese shopping centre on Orchard Road (usually works
for me!)
For cheaper goods there are a few older style shopping centres such as Lucky Plaza, they sell
everything from watches to souvenirs. There are also lots of tailors, perfume sellers and people in

2. electronic stores who may try to hustle you into their store if you look like a tourist, a polite ‘no
thanks’ always works if you aren’t interested.
Mustafa Centre is a 24 hour shopping centre in Little India. It is often frequented by late night
shoppers, including many people who are stopping over in Singapore for a few hours and prefer
to spend time shopping that sitting at the airport.
Historical
A visit to the Changi Chapel and Museum is quite interesting. The museum is quite small and
you can have a good look around in about 2 hours. They also offer a guided tour at certain times.
Beaches
The beaches at Sentosa are the nicest beaches Singapore have to offer (and still don’t come
near to the beaches back home!) However, the sand is clear and the water looks nice, and there
are numerous bars right on the beach and relaxing on Sentosa does feel like an island getaway.
East Coast beach offers a long walkway and some restaurants
Alcohol
Be aware that alcohol is expensive, don’t be surprised to pay $14 for a beer at some bars, that’s
just the way it is! You can look for bars that have happy hour… or just try to drink slowly.
New Asia Bar is located on the 70th floor of the Swissotel and offers the best night views in
Singapore. Beware drinks are expensive and be sure to have a look at the drinks menu, they
have a great selection of cocktails. Before 9pm is happy hour (you get a little discount).
Chjimes which is situated opposite Raffles City shopping centre used to be a Church and is now
home to different restaurants and bars. Some of the bars have nice outdoor areas where you can
sit and relax in the peaceful setting.
Harrys Bar – Boat Quay is a famous icon in Singapore as it was featured in the movie Rogue
Traders about Nick Leeson.
Brewerkz is located at Clarke Quay and offers a variety of brewed beer and American style food
There are lots of nice bars around Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. It is a popular tourist area and
good a nice afternoon drink, you can sit by the river in boat quay, there are also lots of
restaurants to choose from.
