In your school….
What opportunities do students have to share their
Learning Goals with others to support their learning ?
Within the Ultranet, all students
 will have an eXpress Space…
This is a personal space for:
•Students to create a list of learning goals that
are captured in the Ultranet.
• Students to reflect on their progress against
the learning goals throughout the year.
• Teachers to comment on learning goals and
reflections, with the potential to replace some
of the requirements on existing student reports.
So, Why use the Ultranet?........
Let’s watch a 6:06 minute video to see how
PLTs might plan to support students to put their
Learning Goals into the Ultranet eXpress Space

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome everyone. I hope you’ve had an opportunity to grab a headset as it’s a great way to participate and also eliminates any feedback. Feel free to try out any tools and use the virtual whiteboard as we deliver the session. The session is supervised. All chat messages, including private messages are seen by all Moderators. The session is being recorded and will be published online in the iMasterclass Design Space - 139211104 . If you are sharing any resources please be mindful to avoid breaching school or student privacy policies or protocols.
  2. The purpose of these sessions is to build an online community via these Blackboard Collaborate sessions and our Ultranet Design Space – iMasterclass. The Focus is on an effective PLT approach across a school using the 4A Planning Model as seen through our Comic Life cartoon PLT conversations that you’ll view later in this session.
  3. Students put their SMART Goals into Ultranet Wikis Linking students short-term SMART Goals to Student digital portfolios in Ultranet This session shows in detail how PLTs can work together effectively to have SMART Goals available to students, teacher and parents 24/7. assessment as learning – occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future learning goals There is a particularly strong relationship between assessment as learning and the development and monitoring of personal learning goals. In assessment as learning, students monitor their learning and use feedback from this monitoring to make adaptations and adjustments to what they understand. Assessment as learning is regularly occurring, formal or informal (e.g. peer feedback, formal self-assessment), and helps students take responsibility for their own past and future learning. It involves students in understanding the standards expected of them, in setting and monitoring their own learning goals, and in developing strategies for working towards achieving them Assessment as learning has been shown to play an important role in improving student learning outcomes – partly because students are actively engaged in the process, but also because the process develops the skills that underpin the effective development, monitoring and reporting on personal learning goals.
  4. Use the tools on the toolbar of the whiteboard – pencil, Text, Shape to indicate where you are located.
  5. This session is the 3 rd in a series of 8 sessions beginning with 3 sessions on Student learning Goals, followed by 3 more on Reflection on Learning Goals and finishing with 2 sessions on Feedback. Using the Poll buttons A, B, C, D – select which indicates your attendance at our iMasterclass so far.
  6. The PLT model has been chosen as it provides a collaborative strategy to scaffolding a common approach across a whole school. It provides the opportunity to plan and implement changes in practice gradually in stages as will be shared throughout our iMasterclass series of episodes. As you can see the 3 episodes in Student learning Goals are focussed around assessing where we are at? What is our current practice? Value of a personalised goals. How to create authentic rich goals. How they can be accessed and updated in a timely fashion. On our iMasterclass Design Space we have provided a simple 4A PLT model to guide such a scaffold that can be personalised to your school’s PLT agenda. This is reflected in our session “Comic Life” video.
  7. As we’ve discovered it is important for teachers to work together to discuss and define what learning goals are, and then consider examples of appropriate learning goals, and goals that are inappropriate. Developing a common understanding of learning goals gives staff a common language to use in the classroom. Setting goals, taking personal responsibility for learning, and self-evaluation can then become part of normal classroom discussion. - The PLT process can support this implementation with a common approach throughout the Whole School.
  8. In episode 2 we discovered the benefits of a SMART Goal template for ease of use by students. This, or any other template used by your school, can be copy and pasted into the Student Learning Goal eXpress Space. The Wiki is the ideal APP to archive and monitor as many entries throughout the Student’s Years of Schooling. This would form a consistent approach across the school and become common “Best Practice” Students can use a Journal within Learning Tasks as a means of recording, monitoring and reflecting on learning goals. Using the Journal Learning Item allows teachers to allocate learning outcomes from the VELs Personal Learning domain to the Journal and use the Journal to facilitate and assess learning in this domain. Teachers can also contribute on an individual basis to the Journal by adding a Teacher Journal entry or by making Observations. Parents can also make Observations. Students can also link from a Journal entry to content in their Learning Goals and Learning Portfolio Spaces.
  9. S166-2011 Student Report Card requirements and the Ultranet For 2011 schools continue to be required to issue Student Report Cards twice a year using QuickVic or other reporting software. Schools are reminded that details of what the student has achieved, areas for improvement and attendance must be included on report cards. Any remaining elements can be omitted from the report card, providing they are formally reported on in a portfolio, such as the Learning Portfolio in the Ultranet. Portfolio elements that can be delivered to parents through the Ultranet include student learning goals, student and parent comment on progress, details of what the school will do, and what parents can do to support their child’s learning. Note the elements of the Student Report Card that can be delivered through the Ultranet. Students can document their learning goals, collect evidence, and reflect on their learning in their eXpress space. Student and parent comment on progress, details of what the school will do, and what parents can do, can be provided through Observations in Learning Tasks.
  10. Text Tool - Share on the whiteboard Is regular practice? Is it easily accessible? Is it a valued part of student learning? All research carried into the effect on student learning of parents supporting their child’s undeniably proves parent support benefits student learning
  11. The Ultranet will enable students to set weekly, even daily goals or goals related to completion of a particular task or unit of work. With assistance students can use the language of the VELs to be specific about their learning outcomes they wish to achieve. The Ultranet will provide an ongoing space where Parents, Students and Teachers can see the status of student goals and achievements. Over a long period Student Led Conferences can provide a vehicle for students to make a more formal summation of their achievements. At the end of specific tasks or units students need the (structured) opportunity to reflect upon their achievements and set new goals for improvement.
  12. Within the Ultranet, all students have an eXpress Space. This a is a personal space for: Students to create and record their learning goals Students to reflect on their progress against the learning goals throughout the year – to be unpacked in episodes 4, 5 & 6 Teachers to comment on learning goals and reflections providing ongoing advice and feedback – to be unpacked in episodes 7 & 8 In the eXpress Space , students can explicitly link learning goals to their Learning Portfolio, Blogs and Resources. These Ultranet spaces are available for students P-12. Over time these spaces can provide a means for students to be more aware of and take more responsibility for their own learning. Schools and teachers will need to develop approaches to these spaces that ensure they are used efficiently and effectively.
  13. The Ultranet will provide an ongoing space where parents, students and teachers can see the status of student goals and achievements.
