Starts with a welcome surprise in the President’s 2010 budget & continued in 2011- directing us to take part in a “Improve Rural Health Care Initiative.” Did not know this was coming … with it found out we were level funded for first time in almost a decade This was a welcome change -seven straight years of getting zeroed out Working with Office of Management and Budget to implement vision Key elements- partnerships/collaboration, workforce- R &R, infrastructure Emphasis on using evidence-based practice across our programs, Identification of successful models Outreach and coordination with HRSA’s telehealth programs Have to be realistic … we have a budget of $168 m a year Best way to use these funds- Believe that our programs should be seen as a test bed, a laboratory for good rural ideas that can then be shared broadly This initiative can help point us in that direction.
