First Retrofit Installation of Ballast Water Treatment System Completed
The introduction of invasive marine species into new environments via ships’ ballast water is a
major environmental issue, and to prevent the same, legislation requiring installation of
relevant treatment systems onboard of all ocean-going vessels is expected to be enforced
worldwide soon.
SSK is pleased to have successfully completed the engineering and first installation of a ballast
water treatment system this 13th of July on the 845 teu container vessel “Hanjin Semarang”
(ballast water capacity 4,372m3) owned by Imecs Co., Ltd., a daughter company of Itochu
Corporation.
Swedish Alfa Laval is one of the leading manufacturers of ballast water treatment systems, and
for this container vessel, its “Pure Ballast 250” system has been selected.
Necessary design data were collected during an onboard visit to the vessel prior its drydocking,
using a sophisticated three-dimensional laser scanning system in combination with 3D CAD
software. SSK then completed the engineering and manufacturing of the necessary piping in
advance of the actual installation, thereby greatly reducing installation time and costs.
For this project, the complete installation and retrofit took only five days, with two more days
for Classification Society inspection, to a total of only seven days, all within the vessel’s
scheduled General Survey drydocking. The installation works of the system was outsourced to
a Malaysian repairyard.
SSK intends to capitalize on the experience gained through this first retrofit installation, using
the aforementioned laser scanning and design software to further shortening installation time
and costs, and offering a complete package of engineering services and installations of the
major systems on a wide range of vessels, at its own Sasebo ship repair facilities, or overseas
partner yards.
