Each new year brings the opportunity to make New Year’s resolutions. But
perhaps 2009 presents us with a different opportunity. I would like to offer
an idea for consideration: How about taking the opportunity this year to
RE-PRIORITIZE our lives based on what is meaningful and important?
To look at our resources and determine how we could best use them.
While finances are certainly a part of our resources, they are only a part.
Here’s a question: Do we see our world as lacking in resources, or as having
an abundance of them?
When we look at our world, there are many people who lack love – but there is ample love to go around.
How do we tap into it and share it? As Mother Theresa said, “Many more people are starving for love
than for food in our world.” This is a very astute observation from a woman who spent her life with the
neediest people in the world.
There is a lack of security, but there is an abundance of faith in our world. How do we find it and apply
it to our lives?
There is a sense of financial lack in our world, yet there is an unlimited universe of ideas that will create
future financial prosperity. What are those ideas that will unleash financial prosperity?
There seems to be many lonely people but there are plenty of communities that desire people to get
involved and embrace their ideals and causes. I personally invite you to join me in my mission of
inspiring people to experience wellness! In fact, I will be traveling to 25 cities with our Chief Science
Officer, Brazos Minshew, to introduce new products and to explain our referral program, which allows
Members to share TriVita products with others. I hope to meet you at one of those events!
Those are just a few of my observations on what seems to be a paradox. How could there be such lack
and such bounty at the same time? And yet, that is the way it is. Is there something for us to plug into
that opens up the abundance in our lives? I truly believe there is a secret to this paradox. Here is my
insight: Abundance is not measured best by what we have or don’t have; IT IS BEST MEASURED IN
WHAT WE ENJOY.
Please at least give consideration to this thought; it is not intended to be disrespectful in any way to
people who are hurting financially or may be suffering in some other way. It is offered to give hope and
direction for creating abundance in your life.
So, the secret that can help all of us enjoy more abundance is to embrace and practice those things
we enjoy most in our lives – the things that are most meaningful to us. Again, it is not measured in
the things we have or don’t have. There are many examples of people in the most difficult circumstances
who found an inner quality of life that cannot be replaced by material things. They were surrounded
by abundance!
Since we are a wellness company, let’s use wellness as our example. Certainly I have never met anyone
who did not want more wellness. But I have met many people who were not well. (In fact, it was my own

ome January many of us
are in a post-holiday funk.
With temperatures dipping
and snowdrifts piling up in many
parts of North America, it’s only
natural to want to put another log
on the fire and curl up on your
comfy couch. If your only heavy
lifting this time of year is picking
up the TV remote control, then you

personal energy crisis.
We can all be energetic – even in the dead of
winter. That’s because being energetic doesn’t
necessarily mean being constantly “on the go.”
Having energy means feeling a real zest for
life. It’s having the drive and initiative to
accomplish whatever you want – to make your
dreams come true, or even to accomplish the
small tasks of the day. When you’re energetic,
you feel happier... more hopeful... more
optimistic and have better self-esteem.
Real energy and how you create it
Real energy is created by a complex series of
physical processes. To feel energetic, your body
must carry out a long series of interactions,
almost like a line of dominos falling over in
the right sequence. Every transaction requires
energy from the previous domino and donates
energy to the next domino in line. The end
result determines your level of energy and just
how good you feel.
Energy production relies on metabolism

Most of us don’t think of
including liquids on our list
of high-energy foods, but fruit
juices and water are tops for

New Year’s resolutions? This year,
try a different approach. Forget
the fad diets and expensive exercise

Set achievable goals
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
recommends setting two to three goals at a time
and making them:

Make your weight loss goals specific and

Is the winter chill keeping you indoors?
Try any of these fun (and warm!) activities:
Dance – Dancing is a great way to stay
active during the winter months. Community
centers, municipal recreation departments and
community colleges offer low-cost dance
classes to suit any preference. Whether you
want to waltz, swing or cha cha, there’s sure
to be an option you’ll enjoy.
Walk the mall – Check with your local mall
to see if they have a mall walkers program.
Gradually increase your laps around the mall
so that your body is constantly challenged.
Work out at the gym – Many health clubs
offer reasonably priced memberships. You can
use cardio machines such as treadmills and
elliptical trainers, lift weights, take water
aerobics, swim laps, or even drop in on a yoga
or Pilates class.

of activity are right for you

or most of us, making a
decision boils down to just
two questions: What do I stand
to gain? What do I stand to lose?

This “risk-and-reward” thinking is a classic
model of human psychology, and one that’s been
at the center of our survival. Research continues
into how our brains are “wired” to assess risk. In
fact, just this fall researchers identified the brain
regions involved in risk-taking. They found two
separate centers for the “fear of risk and the lure
of reward,” said the co-author, a professor of
psychology at the University of Southern
California. The study appeared online in the
journal Cerebral Cortex.
Now, though, there’s a new model for the way
we make decisions based on risk and reward.
It’s proposed by a celebrated brain surgeon and
head of a prestigious medical center – and
people are paying attention.
Four smart questions
to ask yourself first!
Ben Carson, M.D., has already published
three best-selling books, and his latest is
a call to action: “Take the Risk: Learning to
Identify, Choose, and Live with Acceptable Risk.”
Drawing on his own life choices, and miraculous
experiences with “risky” surgeries, Dr. Carson has
produced a different way to think about risk. He
calls it “Best/Worst Analysis (B/WA) formula,”
and it’s expressed in these four simple questions:
What is the best thing that
can happen if I do this?
What is the worst thing that
can happen if I do this?
What is the best thing that
can happen if I don’t do this?
What is the worst thing that
can happen if I don’t do this?
According to Dr. Carson, who is director
of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins
Medical Institutions in Maryland, answering
these four questions can produce a decision
to take appropriate, or acceptable risks.
As he notes in the book, “We buy every kind
of insurance to provide us with the security we
think we need. We purchase safety seats to keep
our children secure... our nation spends billions
to keep air travel as safe as possible. What we’re
buying and what everyone is selling us is the
promise of ‘security.’ And yet the only thing
we can be sure of is that someday every one
of us will die.”
Dr. Carson’s message is strong in his personal
faith. In fact, he describes faith itself as a risk,
adding that it’s “a lot more acceptable when
I realize that my personal relationship with
God came at great risk to Him as well.” God
took a risk in creating humans with free will
to choose to believe and obey, or not, he notes.
“Then he took an even bigger risk in sending
his own Son to earth to live and die.”
Accepting risks isn’t foolhardy, contends the
internationally-famous surgeon. It’s necessary
so that we can take part in “the great adventure
of living our lives to their full potential.”

ow that the cheer of holiday
celebrations is quieting down, a
fresh, exciting new year is upon
us. Many of you have decided to set goals
or make resolutions to welcome the new
year. Maybe this year you’re determined
to lose some weight, rev up your physical
activity or reduce some stress. Whatever
your goal, the key to success is to set
realistic expectations of yourself.
Otherwise, your resolutions will be long
gone, and you’ll be back to your old habits.
Here are six ways to help you stick to
your guns on your newly-set goals:
1 Have a plan. By now you’ve already made
your resolutions, but have you planned
specifically how you’ll succeed? If your
resolution is to lose weight, firm up your
commitment by joining an exercise class.
Or, decide what you will do when you’re
tempted to break your resolution. The plan
could include calling a friend to stay
motivated or balancing your checkbook
before you spend more money.
2 find support. Finding support can be
crucial for attaining your goal. Share your
goal with family and friends. Ask them to
try to keep you on track if you start to lose
sight of what you want to achieve. Maybe
someone you know has the same resolu-
tion, and you can support each other with
any potential challenges.
3 create smaller goals along the way.
Big goals are hard to accomplish, and can
seem unrealistic when looking at the big
picture. For example, wanting to get rid
of all your debt in one year may not be
achievable. But, this doesn’t mean your
resolution is hopeless. Set a smaller goal
for debt payoff, like eliminating one credit
card balance. A single, smaller balance
will be easier to tackle than a long list
of bills. Accomplish smaller, related goals,
and you’ll be well on your way.
4 Reward yourself. Let’s face it – making
a change and sticking to it is difficult! If
you’re working hard, you should reward
yourself for your efforts. But be smart
about it: Don’t eat a giant bowl of ice
cream if you’ve lost those first few pounds.
Try to pick a reward that doesn’t coun-
teract your resolution. For example, if you
love going to the movies, and you’ve been
walking five days a week, treat yourself
to a night out with a friend to see the
latest new release.
5 Accept that mistakes happen.
Often, when you are stressed or have
reached a weak moment, you may find
yourself breaking your own promise.
Remember, it’s okay to slip, as long as you
get back on track. If you’ve resolved to eat
better, and you find yourself returning to
old food habits, don’t give up.
6 Keep a journal. Writing down your
progress is a proven way to help reach
your goal. You can express the difficulties
you are having, or the great strides
you’ve made. Writing it out can help
keep you focused and motivated
throughout the year.
So, are you ready to pursue your goals and
face your challenges? Imagine how great you’ll
feel when you succeed. Just remember – be
realistic about what you want to accomplish,
have faith in yourself and welcome change

any people will pause on
January 21 to observe Martin
Luther King Day, honoring the
Baptist minister who championed social
and civil equality. A major force behind
the United States’ Civil Rights Act of l964,
Dr. King (he held a Ph.D. in theology)
delivered innumerable impassioned
speeches. One, of course, made history:
his “I Have a Dream” address during a
peaceful march on Washington, D.C.
Dr. King spoke of his dream, looking forward to
a future of racial freedom and equality in a time
when segregation was legal in some states and
commonplace. In fact, he used the phrase “I
have a dream” no fewer than eight times during
his landmark address, underlining his personal
dream... his life purpose. While some may not
know that Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize,
was named Man of the Year by Time magazine
and was assassinated in 1968, his monumental
dream lives on.
Dr. King’s dream echoes right through to today
as the U.S. has elected its first African-American
President. But of all the ways Dr. King might
have expressed his convictions and faith, why
was the idea of a dream so powerful? Because
dreams – both the sleeping visions and the
waking hopes – are common to us all.
The universal “stories” in our sleep
While we may not remember our dreams, science
tells us that all human beings dream, often for
more than two hours each night. Exactly how
or why we dream is still unknown, though.
Before the 1950s, sleep was thought of as quiet
resting, with not much happening in our brains
and bodies. But in 1953, researchers studying
sleeping babies first described a stage of sleep
called REM (rapid eye movement). During REM,
our eyes dart around rapidly, our heart rate
goes up, our arms and legs become temporarily
paralyzed – and we dream.
One of the first discoveries made was that
dreams almost always take place during REM
sleep. People awakened during REM sleep
often relate the odd, illogical stories or scenes
we call dreams.
Once science woke up to REM, studies
of sleep and dreaming began. Today,
we know that sleep and the dreams
it brings are essential to normal,
healthy life.
What happens
when we dream
During REM sleep, the parts
of the brain used in learning
are stimulated. This may
explain why infants spend
much more time in REM
sleep than adults. When
we don’t get REM sleep,
we have trouble learning.
In one study, two groups
of people were taught a
skill. One group was then
deprived of REM sleep;
and the other group was
deprived of non-REM
sleep. The people
deprived of REM sleep
could not later recall what
they had learned; the
other group was able to
remember their new skill.
When we’re awake, it’s
believed that everything
we experience is stored
somewhere in the brain, like
data in a computer. Then,
during REM sleep, our brain
may be trying to interpret in
some organized way all the information bouncing
around in our heads. Dreams may be the strange,
confusing, beautiful or scary stories that result.

Obese women have more mental roadblocks to weight loss
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
A survey of 288 women showed that overweight and obese women had more perceived roadblocks to weight
loss than normal and underweight women.
Researchers at the Center for Obesity Research and Temple University in Philadelphia found that overweight
and obese women were more likely to report these barriers to losing weight: feeling too self-conscious or overweight
to exercise, aches and pains, fear of failure and a perceived lack of self-discipline. At a 12-month follow-up, women
who reported these problems were found less likely to be physically active.
“Silent” strokes may occur in middle age
Boston, Massachusetts
While studying routine brain scans of 2,040 people (average age 62) in the Framingham Offspring Study,
researchers found that 10% of them had experienced a silent cerebral infarction (stroke) without being aware
of it – and without showing any symptoms.
The researchers reviewed medical records and found that those with atrial fibrillation – a common type of
irregular heartbeat in people over 65 – had more than double the rate of these silent strokes.
There was also an association with other cardiovascular risk factors including high homocysteine, carotid artery
disease and high blood pressure. The study group says this reinforces the need for prevention, early detection and
treatment of such risk factors in mid-life.
B vitamin deficiency/high homocysteine levels linked to hip fractures
Framingham, Massachusetts
Researchers found that elderly men and women who were deficient in B vitamins or had high levels of
homocysteine were at higher risk for hip fracture.
The study, which appeared in the June 2008 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism followed 1,002
people in the Framingham Study for over four years.
Those who were deficient in Vitamin B-12 were 60% more likely to have a hip fracture than those whose B-12
levels were normal. People with high homocysteine levels were 50 – 70% more likely to experience a hip fracture.
Vigorous exercise may cut breast cancer risk
Bethesda, Maryland
Postmenopausal, normal-weight women who engage in vigorous exercise may have a reduced risk of breast cancer,
according to a study published in Breast Cancer Research.
The 11-year study followed 32,269 postmenopausal women to examine the relation between physical activity
and postmenopausal breast cancer risk. Researchers found that normal-weight women who engaged in

our lives. One proverb says that a man’s gift will bring him
before kings. What is the gift you have that you enjoy so much
it will create abundance? For Mother Theresa, it was her gift
of love that brought her not only to the poorest and neediest
in the world, but also before the kings and presidents of the
world. Her abundance was not in the things she had, but in
the profusion of love she had to give.
There is abundance all around you, waiting to be tapped
into, but it comes from what you enjoy and practice consistently.
There is plenty of wellness to draw from if one will practice
those things that create wellness. Yes, we are genetically
different, but thankfully two-thirds of our wellness comes
from the things we do to create wellness in our lives.
As our government and corporations take time to re-prioritize
goals and initiatives, may we also join in RE-PRIORITIZING
our lives in 2009. I hope you will find in this New Year those
things that will produce abundance in your life. Though
there seems to be a world living in lack, we may find there
is a newfound abundance of the things which are most
meaningful and important in our lives.

Overweight and obese women who engaged in vigorous activity
showed no reduction in breast cancer risk.
“Vigorous” exercise was defined as: housework such as scrubbing
floors and demanding yard work, and strenuous sports and exercise,
such as running, aerobics and competitive tennis.
Soothing sonatas and sounds of the sea may
help lower blood pressure
Seattle, Washington
Listening to relaxation tapes or Mozart sonatas may help reduce
blood pressure, according to a study at Seattle University.
Researchers conducted a four-month study that measured the
effects of relaxation tapes and classical music on the blood pressure
of 41 mentally competent adults in retirement facilities.
Participants were divided into two groups: Group one listened
to a 12-minute relaxation CD three days a week while group
two listened to a 12-minute classical music CD three days a week.
On the relaxation CD, a man’s voice guided participants through
deep breathing and relaxation exercises, with ocean sounds in the
background. The music CD featured Mozart sonatas.
In the first month of the study, blood pressure and heart rate were
taken after each intervention. Participants were then asked to
continue with the CDs on their own: three days a week for three
months, with follow-up blood pressure readings scheduled for the
end of month two and month four.
After the first month, systolic (top number) blood pressure fell an
average of 6.4% in the relaxation CD group and about 5% in the
Mozart group. There was not a statistically significant change in
diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure for either group.
At the end of the study, it was found that only about half the
seniors had continued with the therapy. Only those who had
consistently listened to their CDs maintained their reduced
blood pressure.
Although researchers could not tell if the reduction in blood
pressure positively affected the participants’ health, they did say
that in prior studies, reductions of 3% to 5% had been estimated
to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease-related death and
stroke-related death. They suggested that guided relaxation
training could provide a “supplemental” method for lowering
blood pressure.
The findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s
Council for High Blood Pressure Research conference in
September 2008.

a new year brings
with it thoughts
of change, rejuvenation and
resolutions. By the time the
ball drops in Times Square
in New York City and
fireworks fill the night sky

United States, most of us have created a long
list of resolutions.
One item on just about everyone’s list:
getting organized. Not only is it the perfect
time of year to remove the clutter from your

time to think about making a positive change

other people in your life.
If you desire to have renewal in the year ahead,
you have to look inside and see the things
that need to be let go. It’s time to get rid of
emotional toxins such as behavior patterns,

relationships and living life to its fullest.
How we conduct ourselves in life and how
we work within our relationships have a far
greater impact on our happiness than whether

of giving and taking, talking and listening,

A
re you waiting for
God’s promises
to be manifested
in your life – or expecting
them? There is a difference,
and it lies in the nature
of our faith.
When we pray for God’s intervening hand
and then sit back, passively, it can be easy to
tell ourselves we’ve done all we can. God will
get around to it in His own time, and meanwhile
we get on with our lives. But when we expect
God’s promises to be demonstrated, our faith
becomes active. We no longer merely wait for
God’s answer, we are hopeful for it and believe
it will come in His way and time.
Scripture gives us a glorious example of this
active faith, or expectation, compared to passive
waiting. In Acts 15, we read the story of Paul
and Silas. Attacked by an angry mob, beaten
and thrown into a dungeon, the two men faced
a situation that might have defied the sturdiest
conviction of God’s loving will.
Bleeding, imprisoned and yet joyful
Bleeding and friendless, with their feet locked
in wooden stocks, Paul and Silas didn’t weep,
sink into despair or simply wait. Instead, they
rejoiced. Yes, they rejoiced in their faith, calling
out in worship, singing God’s praises. They
believed that God’s perfect plan would soon
be evident in their lives; they affirmed it with
every song and every prayer.
Paul and Silas expected God to show them
something, and He did. Verses 25 and 26
tell us, “But about midnight, as Paul and Silas
were praying and singing hymns of praise to God,
and the (other) prisoners were listening to them,
suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that
the very foundations of the prison were shaken;
and at once all the doors were opened and
everyone’s shackles were unfastened.”
God responds to our prayers in His way, in His
time; there simply is no other, because only He
is in control. As we begin this new year, why not
resolve to put your faith into action? Don’t just
your body, His Temple

Expecting the unexpected in the new year

wait for the Almighty to send an earthquake...
expect that He will and act as though He
already has!
When you think about it, it’s this spirit of
expectation that greets every new life. When
a woman is pregnant, we don’t say that she’s
waiting for a baby. We say that she’s expecting
a baby. She doesn’t sit back and wait for the baby
clothes to somehow appear, or for the crib to
be set up, or for birth to just happen, somewhere,
somehow. She takes the active steps needed
to prepare for the arrival of her child.
Don’t wait for the answer, expect it!
Maybe you’ve been waiting for your own kind
of arrival, praying for a solution that just hasn’t
come. If we live with God’s Word as the bottom
line of our beliefs, expecting that what God
has promised will come to pass in His timing,
we will see the purpose and destiny He has for
us fulfilled.
God has never worked on our timetable. Paul
and Silas had no idea of how long they would
have to “wait” for Divine Intervention, maybe
because what they were doing wasn’t waiting
at all. They were expecting the unexpected,
confident in their faith, believing in God’s will.
It was Paul himself, in a letter to the Romans,
who expressed this expectation well in Romans
8:19: “The creation waits in eager expectation
for the sons of God to be revealed...” I would
emphasize the aspect of “eager expectation”
in this passage, which goes on to describe
the joyful anticipation of God’s ultimate plan.
Make this the year that you stop waiting, too.
Live expectantly with positive affirmation of the
manifestation of God’s promises in your life.

Balance your meals

With all the attention on weight loss in our
world, it’s important to remember that there
is more to losing weight than simply counting
calories. Caloric quality is a more important
focus than quantity. The idea is to focus on
health; balanced weight is the natural byproduct.
Eating for balanced health and weight involves
an appropriate amount of protein, quality
carbohydrates, healthy fats, oils and snacks.
pRoteIn: Protein builds and repairs muscle,
allows optimal immunological function and
stimulates the body to release a necessary
hormone called glucagons. Hard-boiled or
poached eggs, 2% organic unsweetened yogurt,
chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon and other cold-
water fish are all exceptional examples; palm
size is the perfect amount for each meal.
cARBoHYDRAteS: With diabetes on the rise,
people are increasingly aware that the wrong
type of carbohydrates (white stuff) causes
an overproduction of insulin leading to toxic
side effects. Favorable carbohydrates include
vegetables (except corn and carrots), fruits
(except bananas, raisins and dates) and whole
grains like brown rice, oats or rye.

– but all fats are not equal. Two types of fats fall
into the “good fat” category: monounsaturated
fats and omega-3 fats. Monounsaturated fats are
from olive oil, nuts like almonds and cashews

life – that’s Precious! Her workday as a Licensed
Practical Nurse (LPN) often starts as early as
4 a.m. and can stretch well into the evening.

I would like to offer an idea for consideration: How about taking the opportunity this year to RE-PRIORITIZE our lives based on what is meaningful and important? To look at our resources and determine how we could best use them. While finances are certainly a part of our resources, they are only a part. Here’s a question: Do we see our world as lacking in resources, or as having an abundance of them? When we look at our world, there are many people who lack love – but there is ample love to go around. How do we tap into it and share it? As Mother Theresa said, “Many more people are starving for love than for food in our world.” This is a very astute observation from a woman who spent her life with the neediest people in the world. There is a lack of security, but there is an abundance of faith in our world. How do we find it and apply it to our lives? There is a sense of financial lack in our world, yet there is an unlimited universe of ideas that will create future financial prosperity. What are those ideas that will unleash financial prosperity? There seems to be many lonely people but there are plenty of communities that desire people to get involved and embrace their ideals and causes. I personally invite you to join me in my mission of inspiring people to experience wellness! It is offered to give hope and direction for creating abundance in your life. So, the secret that can help all of us enjoy more abundance is to embrace and practice those things we enjoy most in our lives – the things that are most meaningful to us. Again, it is not measured in the things we have or don’t have. There are many examples of people in the most difficult circumstances who found an inner quality of life that cannot be replaced by material things. They were surrounded by abundance! Since we are a wellness company, let’s use wellness as our example. Certainly I have never met anyone who did not want more wellness. But I have met many people who were not well. If you think back on the last few decisions you made, you’ll probably realize that those are just the issues you considered. Should I take a vacation to see family? This “risk-and-reward” thinking is a classic model of human psychology, and one that’s been at the center of our survival. Research continues into how our brains are “wired” to assess risk. In fact, just this fall researchers identified the brain regions involved in risk-taking. They found two separate centers for the “fear of risk and the lure of reward,” said the co-author, a professor of psychology at the University of Southern California. The study appeared online in the journal Cerebral Cortex. Now, though, there’s a new model for the way we make decisions based on risk and reward. It’s proposed by a celebrated brain surgeon and head of a prestigious medical center – and people are paying attention. Four smart questions to ask yourself first! Ben Carson, M.D., has already published three best-selling books, and his latest is a call to action: “Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose, and Live with Acceptable Risk.” Drawing on his own life choices, and miraculous experiences with “risky” surgeries, Dr. Carson has produced a different way to think about risk. He calls it “Best/Worst Analysis (B/WA) formula,” and it’s expressed in these four simple questions: What is the best thing that can happen if I do this? What is the worst thing that can happen if I do this? What is the best thing that can happen if I don’t do this? What is the worst thing that can happen if I don’t do this? According to Dr. Carson, who is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Maryland, answering these four questions can produce a decision to take appropriate, or acceptable risks. As he notes in the book, “We buy every kind of insurance to provide us with the security we think we need. We purchase safety seats to keep our children secure... our nation spends billions to keep air travel as safe as possible. What we’re buying and what everyone is selling us is the promise of ‘security.’ And yet the only thing we can be sure of is that someday every one of us will die.” Dr. Carson’s message is strong in his personal faith. In fact, he describes faith itself as a risk, adding that it’s “a lot more acceptable when I realize that my personal relationship with God came at great risk to Him as well.” God took a risk in creating humans with free will to choose to believe and obey, or not, he notes. “Then he took an even bigger risk in sending his own Son to earth to live and die.” Accepting risks isn’t foolhardy, contends the internationally-famous surgeon. Share your goal with family and friends. Ask them to try to keep you on track if you start to lose sight of what you want to achieve. Maybe someone you know has the same resolu- tion, and you can support each other with any potential challenges. 3 create smaller goals along the way. Big goals are hard to accomplish, and can seem unrealistic when looking at the big picture. For example, wanting to get rid of all your debt in one year may not be achievable. But, this doesn’t mean your resolution is hopeless. Set a smaller goal for debt payoff, like eliminating one credit card balance. A single, smaller balance will be easier to tackle than a long list of bills. Accomplish smaller, related goals, and you’ll be well on your way. 4 Reward yourself. Let’s face it – making a change and sticking to it is difficult! If you’re working hard, you should reward yourself for your efforts. But be smart about it: Don’t eat a giant bowl of ice cream if you’ve lost those first few pounds. Try to pick a reward that doesn’t coun- teract your resolution. For example, if you love going to the movies, and you’ve been walking five days a week, treat yourself to a night out with a friend to see the latest new release. 5 Accept that mistakes happen. Often, when you are stressed or have reached a weak moment, you may find yourself breaking your own promise. Remember, it’s okay to slip, as long as you get back on track. If you’ve resolved to eat better, and you find yourself returning to old food habits, don’t give up. 6 Keep a journal. Writing down your progress is a proven way to help reach your goal. You can express the difficulties you are having, or the great strides you’ve made. Writing it out can help keep you focused and motivated throughout the year. So, are you ready to pursue your goals and face your challenges? Imagine how great you’ll feel when you succeed. Just remember – be realistic about what you want to accomplish, have faith in yourself and welcome change into your new year. A major force behind the United States’ Civil Rights Act of l964, Dr. King (he held a Ph.D. in theology) delivered innumerable impassioned speeches. One, of course, made history: his “I Have a Dream” address during a peaceful march on Washington, D.C. Dr. King spoke of his dream, looking forward to a future of racial freedom and equality in a time when segregation was legal in some states and commonplace. In fact, he used the phrase “I have a dream” no fewer than eight times during his landmark address, underlining his personal dream... his life purpose. While some may not know that Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize, was named Man of the Year by Time magazine and was assassinated in 1968, his monumental dream lives on. Dr. King’s dream echoes right through to today as the U.S. has elected its first African-American President. But of all the ways Dr. King might have expressed his convictions and faith, why was the idea of a dream so powerful? Because dreams – both the sleeping visions and the waking hopes – are common to us all. The universal “stories” in our sleep While we may not remember our dreams, science tells us that all human beings dream, often for more than two hours each night. Exactly how or why we dream is still unknown, though. Before the 1950s, sleep was thought of as quiet resting, with not much happening in our brains and bodies. But in 1953, researchers studying sleeping babies first described a stage of sleep called REM (rapid eye movement). During REM, our eyes dart around rapidly, our heart rate goes up, our arms and legs become temporarily paralyzed – and we dream. One of the first discoveries made was that dreams almost always take place during REM sleep. People awakened during REM sleep often relate the odd, illogical stories or scenes we call dreams. Once science woke up to REM, studies of sleep and dreaming began. Today, we know that sleep and the dreams it brings are essential to normal, healthy life. What happens when we dream During REM sleep, the parts of the brain used in learning are stimulated. This may explain why infants spend much more time in REM sleep than adults. When we don’t get REM sleep, we have trouble learning. In one study, two groups of people were taught a skill. One group was then deprived of REM sleep; and the other group was deprived of non-REM sleep. The people deprived of REM sleep could not later recall what they had learned; the other group was able to remember their new skill. When we’re awake, it’s believed that everything we experience is stored somewhere in the brain, like data in a computer. Then, during REM sleep, our brain may be trying to interpret in some organized way all the information bouncing around in our heads. Dreams may be the strange, confusing, beautiful or scary stories that result. Our waking dreams: hopes for the year ahead In this new year just beginning, have you thought about your personal dreams for 2009? Researchers at the Center for Obesity Research and Temple University in Philadelphia found that overweight and obese women were more likely to report these barriers to losing weight: feeling too self-conscious or overweight to exercise, aches and pains, fear of failure and a perceived lack of self-discipline. At a 12-month follow-up, women who reported these problems were found less likely to be physically active. “Silent” strokes may occur in middle age Boston, Massachusetts While studying routine brain scans of 2,040 people (average age 62) in the Framingham Offspring Study, researchers found that 10% of them had experienced a silent cerebral infarction (stroke) without being aware of it – and without showing any symptoms. The researchers reviewed medical records and found that those with atrial fibrillation – a common type of irregular heartbeat in people over 65 – had more than double the rate of these silent strokes. There was also an association with other cardiovascular risk factors including high homocysteine, carotid artery disease and high blood pressure. The study group says this reinforces the need for prevention, early detection and treatment of such risk factors in mid-life. B vitamin deficiency/high homocysteine levels linked to hip fractures Framingham, Massachusetts Researchers found that elderly men and women who were deficient in B vitamins or had high levels of homocysteine were at higher risk for hip fracture. The study, which appeared in the June 2008 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism followed 1,002 people in the Framingham Study for over four years. Those who were deficient in Vitamin B-12 were 60% more likely to have a hip fracture than those whose B-12 levels were normal. People with high homocysteine levels were 50 – 70% more likely to experience a hip fracture. Vigorous exercise may cut breast cancer risk Bethesda, Maryland Postmenopausal, normal-weight women who engage in vigorous exercise may have a reduced risk of breast cancer, according to a study published in Breast Cancer Research. The 11-year study followed 32,269 postmenopausal women to examine the relation between physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer risk. Soothing sonatas and sounds of the sea may help lower blood pressure Seattle, Washington Listening to relaxation tapes or Mozart sonatas may help reduce blood pressure, according to a study at Seattle University. Researchers conducted a four-month study that measured the effects of relaxation tapes and classical music on the blood pressure of 41 mentally competent adults in retirement facilities. Participants were divided into two groups: Group one listened to a 12-minute relaxation CD three days a week while group two listened to a 12-minute classical music CD three days a week. On the relaxation CD, a man’s voice guided participants through deep breathing and relaxation exercises, with ocean sounds in the background. The music CD featured Mozart sonatas. In the first month of the study, blood pressure and heart rate were taken after each intervention. Participants were then asked to continue with the CDs on their own: three days a week for three months, with follow-up blood pressure readings scheduled for the end of month two and month four. After the first month, systolic (top number) blood pressure fell an average of 6.4% in the relaxation CD group and about 5% in the Mozart group. There was not a statistically significant change in diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure for either group. At the end of the study, it was found that only about half the seniors had continued with the therapy. Only those who had consistently listened to their CDs maintained their reduced blood pressure. Although researchers could not tell if the reduction in blood pressure positively affected the participants’ health, they did say that in prior studies, reductions of 3% to 5% had been estimated to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease-related death and stroke-related death. They suggested that guided relaxation training could provide a “supplemental” method for lowering blood pressure. When we pray for God’s intervening hand and then sit back, passively, it can be easy to tell ourselves we’ve done all we can. God will get around to it in His own time, and meanwhile we get on with our lives. But when we expect God’s promises to be demonstrated, our faith becomes active. We no longer merely wait for God’s answer, we are hopeful for it and believe it will come in His way and time. Scripture gives us a glorious example of this active faith, or expectation, compared to passive waiting. In Acts 15, we read the story of Paul and Silas. Attacked by an angry mob, beaten and thrown into a dungeon, the two men faced a situation that might have defied the sturdiest conviction of God’s loving will. Bleeding, imprisoned and yet joyful Bleeding and friendless, with their feet locked in wooden stocks, Paul and Silas didn’t weep, sink into despair or simply wait. Instead, they rejoiced. Yes, they rejoiced in their faith, calling out in worship, singing God’s praises. They believed that God’s perfect plan would soon be evident in their lives; they affirmed it with every song and every prayer. Paul and Silas expected God to show them something, and He did. Verses 25 and 26 tell us, “But about midnight, as Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the (other) prisoners were listening to them, suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the very foundations of the prison were shaken; and at once all the doors were opened and everyone’s shackles were unfastened.” God responds to our prayers in His way, in His time; there simply is no other, because only He is in control. As we begin this new year, why not resolve to put your faith into action? Don’t just your body, His Temple 1 Cor. 6:19-20 “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.” – Psalm 62:5 Expecting the unexpected in the new year by Chaplain Gene Henderson wait for the Almighty to send an earthquake... expect that He will and act as though He already has! When you think about it, it’s this spirit of expectation that greets every new life. When a woman is pregnant, we don’t say that she’s waiting for a baby. We say that she’s expecting a baby. She doesn’t sit back and wait for the baby clothes to somehow appear, or for the crib to be set up, or for birth to just happen, somewhere, somehow. She takes the active steps needed to prepare for the arrival of her child. Don’t wait for the answer, expect it! Maybe you’ve been waiting for your own kind of arrival, praying for a solution that just hasn’t come. If we live with God’s Word as the bottom line of our beliefs, expecting that what God has promised will come to pass in His timing, we will see the purpose and destiny He has for us fulfilled. God has never worked on our timetable. Paul and Silas had no idea of how long they would have to “wait” for Divine Intervention, maybe because what they were doing wasn’t waiting at all. They were expecting the unexpected, confident in their faith, believing in God’s will. It was Paul himself, in a letter to the Romans, who expressed this expectation well in Romans 8:19: “The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed...” I would emphasize the aspect of “eager expectation” in this passage, which goes on to describe the joyful anticipation of God’s ultimate plan. Make this the year that you stop waiting, too. Live expectantly with positive affirmation of the manifestation of God’s promises in your life. “The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed...” Romans 8:19 As we begin this new year, why not resolve to put your faith into action?
