Choosing the Best Inexpensive Headphones
1. CHOOSING THE BEST INEXPENSIVE HEADPHONES
Trying to choose the best headphones with a reasonable price tag can be a challenging task. That is if
you are also looking for good quality headphones. The risk of buying bad headphones in price range
of up to 50 dollars is considerably higher than in the range of higher priced models. 99% of these
headphones are being manufactured in China or some other Asian countries, and unfortunately, the
quality is often not that great. Even some of the headphones by well known manufacturers offer
terrible sound quality. Let’s have a look at some of the best cheap headphones you can possibly
purchase.
The Koss PortaPro over-ear headphones are undoubtedly one of the most famous headphones ever
produced. They were originally introduced in 1984 and they still belong to the bestselling
headphones. Their design is often being seen as old-school. People either love it or hate it. The sound
quality is quite good; maybe a bit too bassy for my taste. Of course, the sound quality could be
better, but the chances of finding better sounding headphones for such a low price is rather small.
Another thing worth mentioning is PortaPro’s portability; the head band is collapsible which makes it
possible to fit these headphones in your pocket. The headphones also ship with nice carrying case.
The price of the Koss PortaPros is usually set around 35 dollars.
Another model I would like to write about is the Sennheiser PX-100. With a price tag of almost 60
dollars, not everyone will think that they are cheap headphones. However, these Sennheiser over-ear
headphones are so good that they are worth the extra cash. In my opinion, they sound much better
than the Koss PortaPro, but people who like deep bass should look elsewhere as these headphones
produce less bassy sound. Similarly to the PortaPro, the PX-100s offer great portability, because they
are easily foldable. They also come with a plastic carrying case.
So far, we have talked about over-ear headphones; now we are going to take a look at in-ear
headphones (or ear buds). A particular model I would recommend is the Sony MDR-XB40EX. With a
price tag of 40 dollars, you can go wrong with these ear buds. The sound quality is excellent,
although it may be a bit too heavy on the bass for some people. Even though I prefer more natural
sound, I did like the sound of these ear buds. They feel very comfortable (at least for me); they even
come with three different silicon buds to choose from. Other thing worth mentioning is the cord; it is
a tangle-free cord; with other headphones, it was always quite a challenge to untangle the annoying
cords. Similarly to the two previously mentioned headphones, the Sony MDR-XB40EX ship with a
neat carrying case.
I sincerely think that you will not make a mistake, if you decide to purchase one of these
headphones. To be on the safe side, I definitely recommend trying these models in your local audio
store before you buy them, although they will probably not let you try the Sony ear buds, because it
would not be very hygienical.
