  1. Hello. In this presentation, I will discuss the Oracle Virtual Networking products. I will show you how they can increase application performance by 30 times and provide the agility you need to address the constant changes in your data center.
  2. Today we will discuss Oracle Virtual Networking and the Data Center Fabric for the Cloud. Why Data Center Fabric? We will talk about the industry trend and IT challenges and how the Data Center Fabric can be used to address those challenges. We will talk about Oracle’s Data Center Fabric products, which are called Oracle Virtual Networking. And then we will give you some customer examples as well.
  3. Here are some typical IT challenges. There is a push towards consolidation within the data center. CIOs and Directors of IT are being asked to reduce no. of devices in the data center. Fifty percent of all workloads are now virtualized. This means you are getting more devices running virtual machines than were typical in the past. Also, many data centers are now adding additional services to accommodate growing number of mobile devices and tablets such as iPads. Analysts forecast that by 2020, there might be more than 7Billion devices. And finally, you need to address security and regulatory compliance while maintaining the network isolation that you have had in the past.
  4. Let’s look at some solutions to these challenges. When you consolidate a data center, you need the ability to connect any device to any other device in the data center. Any server should have the ability to connect to any network resource or any storage resource on demand. As you virtualize your workload, you need a fully virtualized infrastructure. It's not sufficient just to virtualize only your servers. As you deliver more services, you need to have a data center that is simple and scalable. And at the same time, you want to maintain your network isolation and security.
  5. A traditional infrastructure has certain issues that do not allow it to work well in this new world. First, a traditional data center is much more complex. Every server has its own devices, its own network adapters, and its own storage adapters. Then you need to bind them to network switches and storage fabrics on this outbound side. Second, this typical data center is inflexible. It's difficult to reconfigure. To avoid downtime, you don't typically go in and add additional network ports or storage ports to a server that's running in your data center.Third, a typical data center has limited performance. It is not scalable, and the typical network topologyalso creates bottlenecks in a data center. For a network packet to flow from one device on one rack to a neighboring rack, it has to pass through six hops in a typical network architecture.
  6. To help you resolve these issues, we'll talk about Oracle Virtual Networking, which is Oracle’s data center fabric solution.
  7. The Oracle Virtual Networking product family consists of several major elements. One is the hardware that you see on the top left of the picture here, which are the Oracle Fabric Interconnect boxes. You can select between the 4U-high system and the 2U-high system; and I will contrast those two in a second. There is a management software element, which is called Oracle Fabric Manager, shown on top right of the slide. It's a graphical user interface based solution. You log in and you can basically manage the entire infrastructure from a single pane of glass.Going clockwise, bottom right of the slide shows the performance monitoring product called Oracle Fabric Monitor, which allows you to see granularly into every virtual NIC, virtual HBA, every port, and every chassis that you have in your infrastructure. Finally, the Oracle SDN software allows you to take servers and bind them to each other using private L2 networks and getting extremely fast speed.
  8. Oracle Virtual Networking delivers complete fabric infrastructure for the data center. OVN simplifies complex data center deployments with a wire-once solution and simple software-defined network configuration. Oracle Virtual Networking (OVN) products offer solutions to challenges we discussed earlier:OVN consolidates server connectivity and reduces the number of devices by up to 70%.OVN virtualizes the data center infrastructure with the ‘private virtual interconnect’ in Oracle SDN, allowing connection from any VM or server to other VMs, servers, network and storage devices.OVN enables you to add more services quickly by providing a data center infrastructure that is simple to deploy and easy to reconfigure for your cloud deployments. You get predictable performance for mission-critical applications with our granular QoS controls for network and storage access. We also provide security in multi-tenant Cloud environment, so you can protect your customers’ sensitive data. Now, let’s look at the attributes of Oracle Virtual Networking. First, it's a fairly simple architecture. When we converge everything on to two pipes, you have fewer switches, fewer cards and cables. From the Oracle Fabric Interconnect systems, you go straight to a core Ethernet switch or a core Fibre channel switch. Consequently, you flatten your topology, you have fewer tiers, and you have the software defined networking capability that I will explain more later, which means that this entire infrastructure can be defined in software. You can add Ethernet connections, Fibre channel connections. You can create SDN Networks all on demand.

  10. (Notes: this slide has builds. There are detailed speaker notes to explain the slide. Please continue to read the speaker notes on the next page, which is marked as ‘Hide’ in Slideshow mode). If you look at the world today, this is the picture, right? Every server has its own network adapters, its own storage adapters. This architecture is inflexible and not scalable. It does not allow you to make changes to the architecture easily. With Oracle Virtual Networking, we can get rid of those network devices and storage devices you have on the server. Instead every server is connected with a one-time point-to-point, high-speed, high bandwidth, extremely low latency link into these two hardware boxes you see in the middle of the picture, which are called the Oracle Fabric Interconnects. And the reason we show two boxes, instead of one, is that this architecture gives you high availability. Now what you do is install some drivers on every server, and the two Oracle Fabric Interconnects will contain all your network adapters and storage adapters. In this picture, you see that each one of those Fabric Interconnects has four I/O module devices in the bottom. So those are the devices that connect into your 1 Gig or 10 Gig Ethernet fabrics or into your 8 Gig fibre channel fabric. And what we do is we take a single 8 Gig fibre channel port for example, bind into a switch, and we virtualize that port. We make that port look like 64 fibre channel HBA devices. Similarly, if we take a 10 Gig Ethernet link, bind it into a switch port and we make that one 10 Gig link look like 128 Ethernet NIC devices. So essentially these two fabric interconnect boxes that you see in the middle contain all your network adapters and storage adapters for a rack or two of servers. Once the systems are installed and set up, you never have to go in and touch the server again. Using our management software, you can simply go and add as many network ports or storage ports you need on any one of the servers that are bound into this fabric. For example, you are running Oracle virtual machine on that server in the left of the picture and you need to install 12 Ethernet devices and 4 fibre channel devices. You simply go into the Oracle Fabric Manager console and you say, give this server 12 Ethernet NICs and 4 fabric channel HBAs. They show up on the host and the beauty of the solution is that as far as the server is concerned, it is as if somebody has gone in and plugged in 12 Ethernet adapters and 4 fibre channel adapters. So, they look and function and behave just like native adapters.
  11. Now, part of the Oracle Virtual Networking family is the Oracle SDN or Software Defined Networking. What is software defined networking? It is a solution that allows you to build private networks across an existing fabric. And you need these private networks because you have the need for virtual machines to communicate with other virtual machines. You have the need for certain servers to talk to other servers. So if you look at the Oracle Virtual Networking family, we have a very fast fabric because of the Infiniband technologythat we use for connecting the servers into the Fabric Interconnect. InfiniBand is a familiar technology to Oracle customersbecause Oracle has been promoting it in their other solutions, such as engineered systems. We have the ability to create Ethernet NICs on servers on demand. That means you can take many servers and racks and create a private network across this InfiniBand fabric using this technology without the need to use an external Ethernet switch. And that is what we call Oracle SDN.We are able to create 40 Gigabit links between servers using traditional Ethernet connectivity. And these are Layer 2 networks that are connected from server to server or virtual machine to virtual machine. And assuming you have two links, you can get up to 80 Gigabits of throughput for server to server traffic. And these Ethernet packets and standard Ethernet L2 frames can go between those two servers. With Oracle SDN, you can get up to 64,000 private virtual interconnects, which means you get lots of connectivity.Plus you can get network isolation without relying on VLANs. More importantly, Oracle actually has an SDN solution that is shipping today.
  12. Oracle Fabric Manager gives you complete control of your data center fabric from a single pane of glass. The software is intuitive. It gives you a view of the entire environment. It uses cloud methodologies to build out your infrastructure and also gives you useful real time information.Oracle Fabric Manager is an extensible product. It allows you to build plug-ins that you can then bind into Fabric Manager to get additional functionality.
  13. One such plug-in is the Oracle Fabric Monitor. Oracle Fabric Monitor, once installed with Oracle Fabric Manager, gives you the ability to view your traffic across your entire installed set of servers and I/O devices. You can view the traffic across all the servers on a single screen. You can view traffic for both Ethernet and fibre channel. You can see all the traffic that is on a specific port or for a specific vNIC or vHBA or even all the traffic across many chassis. You can get pretty granular. You can view the traffic for a specific port or a specific device anywhere in this data center. You can also graph the results over time ranging from minutes to several months.
  14. Oracle Virtual Networking provides a converged solution, which means that you can put Ethernet and fibre channel on the same wire. But that does not mean that you compromise. Because the fabric is lossless and highly reliable, those fibre channel frames are guaranteed to deliver from the server into the fibre channel fabric in the same manner as if you have a native HBA device on the host. You get full line rate on any packet flows.Oracle Virtual Networking has been proven to be an enterprise solution. There are over 300 customers worldwide using this product family.
  15. The entire solution is fast. We are leveraging technology called InfiniBand, which gives you up to 80 Gigabits of bandwidth per server. Now, when you use Oracle SDN technology, you can put all your server traffic that goes from server to server. For example, when you are doing V-motion or live migration, you can put that on the SDN Fabric. And you can get up to 19 times faster VM migration than with traditional Ethernet. You can put all your backup traffic on Oracle SDN, thereby giving you up to 30 times improvements on backup. We give you granular Quality of Service (QoS), so you can get predictable performance for mission critical applications. For example, you are running an Oracle database and you want to guarantee certain amount of network and storage throughput, you can do that with this architecture. And finally, the InfiniBand fabric has the lowest latency (in hundreds of nanoseconds) of any fabric out there. It's about a third of the latency of standard Ethernet (in microseconds).
  16. Oracle Virtual Networking architecture is secure. In the earlier slides I talked about network isolation. You can see here: if I create two NICs on the server and I bind them to two different ports on one of the I/O modules in the Fabric Interconnect, I am creating a completely isolated Layer 2 connections on those NIC devices. Now this product has been tested for security and compliance requirements and has proven that it can work in a multi-tenant environment with network isolation.
  17. Oracle virtual networking enhances many elements of the red stack and customers looking for a simple to use data center fabric that can accommodate their most challenging workloads can do it all with oracle virtual networking and the rest of the oracle product family. The fabric can accomidate x86 and SPARC systems, the first and only in the industry to have that feature set, customers can combine many different workloads into a simple, efficient fabric and know they they will deliver the SLAs that they need with full quality of service.
  18. Oracle virtual networking is the first and only data center fabric solution that supports the full range of SPARC servers along with the broadest portfolio of OS and system hypervisors. SPARC customers can gain more flexibility in their deployments by combining Oracle virtual networking with the latest sparc systems for huge gains in efficiency and increased levels of consolidation. Oracle engineers all the element in the fabric to work together, from the easy to use fabric manager, to the built in zero overhead virtualization on our sparc systems to the innovative Solaris tools that allow you to move existing workloads off older systems into a virtual environment on new consolidated sparc systems.
  19. The proliferation of virtualized servers in the last few years has made virtualization of the supporting networks absolutely essential, connecting those individual compute notes through to the backend storage. With Oracle, the complexity of delivering compute, network and storage resources has been reduced allowing these to be dynamically allocated and re-allocated on demand.Oracle’s latest acquisition, Xsigo Systems, provides software defined networking technology to simplify cloud infrastructure, allowing customers to dynamically and flexibly connect any server to any network and storage as part of a single data center network fabric. This greatly reduces the complexity and cost of several layers of switches, server cards and cables. Combined with Oracle Solaris 11 and the ZFS Storage Appliance, only Oracle can provide high performance end-to-end cloud solution with extreme agility and security.
  20. Let's look at some customer examples.
  21. Let's look at some customer examples.
  22. Today with OVN technology, we've got hundreds of customers spanning across the globe. We have customers in Europe, in all over North America, in Asia-Pacific as well.
  23. Whether your business is in the consolidation, virtualisation, or cloud computing stage, Oracle has a portfolio of products tohelp you reduce risk and quickly generate operational & cost benefits. With Consolidation, you can build out an infrastructure that has fewer components and devices. By consolidating many inefficient legacy servers to fewer but more powerful servers, you get increased compute capacity for current and future applications. We can help you minimize application downtime during the transition to modernize your data center and simplify management of complex data center infrastructure.- Server Consolidation: you can decommissioning underutilized physical servers) - Rack Space Consolidation: you can reallocate underutilized racksVirtualization: you can get faster VM migration. You can even put more virtual machines per server because you have no I/O bottlenecks and you get granular performance control. Oracle Virtual Networking is ideal for the Cloud.OVN cloud solution provides service flexibility, the ability to create virtual private data centers using Oracle SDN technology. And you can create up to 16,000 such private connections inside a single fabric and you get higher VM density. The important point about the cloud architecture is that with Oracle Virtual Networking and our SDN capabilities, you can build an infrastructure that is completely software defined.
  24. So, let's summarize. With Oracle Virtual Networking technology you basically get the ability to build a true cloud infrastructure. Everything that you have in your racks can be defined in software for connectivity purposes. That means you can take any application that's running on a server whether it be a database or virtual machine or a VDI session, and you could bind into any network or storage fabric on demand.Oracle Virtual Networking dynamically manages East and Wets traffic, not just North and South. East-West traffic is VM-to-VM links on a server cluster within a data center or across data centers. North-South traffic runs up from servers through switches and out onto the network. The traditional way of handling East-West traffic is to rely on virtual LANs –VLANs – in the Layer 2 network. Each time you move a virtual machine, you have to reconfigure the VLANs, which can take hours and are prone to human errors. And if you use a virtual switch, then there is another layer of complexity added to the stack that is not particularly agile because you still have to configure switch ports, virtual servers, and virtual switches by hand. With Oracle Virtual Networking, connections are configured within Oracle SDN, using a supremely elegant resource: the private virtual interconnect. The private virtual interconnect is an isolated link that connects virtual machines to other data center resources. Being a software-defined network, it can be deployed in seconds. You can use private virtual interconnects to join any number of virtual machines, virtual appliances, networks, storage devices, and bare metal servers in isolated layer 2 (L2) domains. Private virtual interconnects do not rely on VLAN or port configurations. The three most important points around Oracle Virtual Networking is that it is simple. It saves you money. You wire once and you walk away, you never need to touch that infrastructure again. It is agile, which means that you can dynamically make connectivity changes in your data center depending on what your profiles are for your application need. And it is extremely fast. You get a lot more throughput than you would with any other architecture and it eliminates many I/O bottlenecks that you might face in a traditional architecture.
