CASE HISTORY
•on 14 December 2011, where a truck transporting 33800 l of gasoline caught fire on the
eastbound 60 Freeway under the Paramount Boulevard Bridge, in Montebello, Los Angeles, CA,
USA. The intense fire, which lasted several hours, severely damaged the reinforced concrete
structure of the overpass;

CASE HISTORY
•on 29 April 2007, where a truck transporting 32600 l of gasoline had an accident and burst into
flames the MacArthur Maze in California. The fire, which is believed to have reached very high
temperatures, heated the overpass above the incident, which served as connector between the I-80
and the I-580.

84. PONTE IN ACCIAIO A STRUTTURA RETICOLARE
A highway bridge is expected to experience numerous extreme events during its lifetime.
Therefore multiple hazards (e.g. earthquake, wind gust, flood, vessel collision, traffic
overload and accidents, and terrorist attacks etc.) must be properly considered in
highway bridge design in addition to the normal functionality requirement. The severity of
these hazards can significantly increase the costs of construction and maintenance,
especially if they are considered for rehabilitation of existing bridges.

FRACTURE CRITICAL SYSTEMS
“The term “fracture critical” indicates that if one main component of a bridge fails, the entire
structure could collapse. Therefore, a fracture critical bridge is a steel structure that is designed
with little or no load path redundancy. Load path redundancy is a characteristic of the design that
allows the bridge to redistribute load to other structural members on the bridge if any one member
loses capacity. “

CASO IN ESAME: I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis, 1 Agosto 2007
“The deck truss comprised in two parallel Warren trusses (east
and west) with verticals. Steel gusset plates were used on all the
112 connections of the two main trusses. All nodes had two gusset
plates on either side of the connection. The east and west main
trusses were spaced 22 m apart and were connected by 27
transverse welded floor trusses spaced 11.6 m on centers and by
two floor beams at the north and south ends.”
