1. Working Title: THE USE OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN PROMOTING
VOCABULARY IN ESL CLASSROOM
Research Objectives Research Questions Research Design
1. To investigate the use
of authentic materials in
promoting vocabulary
mastery in ESL
classroom
How does the use of authentic
materials in promoting
vocabulary mastery in ESL
classroom?
Research Approach
Qualitative
Research Design
Interview - The purpose of interviewing is
to find out what is on their mind. Reaping
up “the essence of an experience” by
getting and understanding the perspectives
of those who are involved in the
phenomenon is the cardinal element in
phenomenological study (Grbich, 2007,
p.57). This research question requires me
to conduct a structured interview to obtain
information about the use of authentic
materials (i.e. asking a set of structured
questions)
Research Instruments
1. Structured interview
i. Estimated time – 30 minutes
ii. 8 students
Data Analysis
The constant comparative method (CCM)
together with theoretical sampling
constitutes the core of qualitative analysis
in the grounded theory approach
developed by Glaser and Strauss (Glaser
and Strauss, 1967; Strauss, 1987; Glaser,
1992). Therefore, the data in hand will be
analysed and compared with the new data.
The texts that resulted from transcription
of the interviews provided the input for
the analysis process used to make sense of
the data and to reconstruct the
perspectives.
2. 2. To investigate the
advantages of using
authentic materials in
ESL reading class
