The pharmacy technician position is an extremely important job in the medical field. Employees
in this position work directly under a licensed pharmacist, and are responsible for providing
patients with medications and the proper information regarding the medications given.
In order to provide patients and customers with the medicines they need, pharmacy technicians
are sometimes in charge of counting drugs, packaging and labeling prescriptions, and
communicating with doctors offices and hospitals regarding patient care. The pharmacy
technician job description may also include regular business practices such as filing, billing,
accepting payments, and answering phones. Pharmacy technician job descriptions may vary
depending on the particular type of workplace.
Pharmacy techs that work in hospitals may have more job duties than those working in
pharmacies. Examples of these job duties may include reading patient charts, insuring the
institution has the correct amounts of medicines and supplies, and packaging and labeling
medicines that will be dispensed by nurses or other hospital staff.
No matter the location, the pharmacy technician will always function under the order of a
licensed pharmacist. In the simplest explanation, the primary duties of the pharmacy technician
are to make the job of the pharmacist easier and keep the pharmacy running as smoothly as
possible. While holding this position, one can accept prescriptions, contact health insurance
companies, and speak with prescribing doctors, but should NEVER address the questions of
patients or administer medications without pharmacist approval.

2. Along with proper training and certifications, interested persons should have computer skills and
proficient communication or people skills. The pharmacy technician job description includes
competencies such as written communication, team work, customer service, and problem
solving.
To succeed in this position, one must follow orders promptly and adapt great organizational
skills. Dealing with a multitude of medicines and patients is no easy task, and each prescription
should be treated with the upmost importance.
