1. SOME INFORMATION TO HELP
YOU WITH THE BILL OF RIGHTS
SOME PEOPLE EXPRESSED CONFUSION ON SOME OF
THE AMENDMENTS
2. FIRST AMENDMENT
• Most people said they felt this was the most
important
• The different freedoms allowed from this
Amendment are important
• The right to assemble means it is OK for you to get a group
of people together to talk, discuss, protest or other things as
long as it is peaceful and no one is hurt
• The freedom of speech means you can say what you think
unless it threatens someone else’s freedoms (ex. hate
speech is not a freedom)
3. SECOND AMENDMENT
• The Right To Bear Arms
• This means that even though we have a military, people are
allowed to possess weapons for their personal protection
• This Amendment does have limits and there are certain things
the average citizen cannot legally own or possess
4. THIRD AMENDMENT
• No one can be forced to allow a soldier to live with
them
• When the Constitution was written it was during a time
where it was no uncommon for soldiers to live with ordinary
citizens. Basically the people would be told “this soldier now
lives with you”.
• Because of this Amendment, this cannot happen without
the homeowners approval and agreement
5. SEVENTH AMENDMENT
• The right to a jury trial in a civil case
• This Amendment means when you are suing someone (or a
business) you have the right to have a jury of ordinary
citizens decide the case
• It is not limited just to criminal cases
6. NINTH AMENDMENT
• Protection of rights not specifically enumerated in
the Constitution
• This means that just because the Constitution doesn’t list
every right that you don’t have that right
• An example: The Constitution does not say everyone has a right
to be safe on the job but yet, that is a right established through
other laws and rules
7. TENTH AMENDMENT
• States rights
• Basically that unless the Constitution says that something is
decided by the Federal Government, it is a State by State
decision or left to the people to decide
• Example: State sales tax, the death penalty, driving laws
regarding age when you can drive and how you get your
license.
