EvaluationAS Media - Music Magazine Faye Murgatroyd
I have chose the Indie/Alternative Rockgenre. The most notable magazine of this genre are NMEandQmagazine, in which both use bold enticing colours with the clear images of artists on the cover.
Bands who inspired my magazine Kings of Leon Kasabian Biffy Clyro Marina & the diamonds Yeah yeah yeahs Florence & the machine
In what ways does my magazine, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products? The title needs of the magazine needs to be bold and clear, this title usually remains on the same text, font size and colour boosting its audience awareness. The image on the cover needs to be noticeable with recognizable . The star needs to be looking directly at the camera therefore, directly looking at the audience enticing them to purchase the magazine. The Front Cover: The main artist the magazine concentrates on, is in bold and clear text which usually is in the centre of the page. I have put mine just below their shoulders as the photo is very motionless and uninteresting. This covers it up and allows makes my magazine appear more appealing to the consumer. I also used a pull quote to further intrigue the reader into wanting to purchase my magazine. The cover lines show other artists featured inside the magazine. Smaller images are used to compel the target audience by using popular artists within the genre of music. I chose to include free poster to promote the artists. Music magazines generally include text revealing other bands that are included within the magazine again persuading an audience. There needs to be a barcode so the product can be scanned and sold as well as this, a date/issue number and a price.
Covers that inspired my final product I used this checked pattern as a border, as I felt that it tied in with this cult genre of indie rock/alternative genre. NME used this image situated in a studio, with this enticing green background . I used a backdrop similar to this hoping that my magazine would have the same attention grabbing effect, I have chosen a similar layout to this NME cover promoting a popular bands tour appealing to the target audience.
In what ways does my magazine, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products? The Contents Page: The contents page title, text needs to be bold and clear. I have chosen to include the title of my magazine in the title, similar to the NME contents layout. I have also arranged my contents into sections, making what the reader is looking for easier to find. This also makes the reader aware of the content that is included within the magazine every week . I took my inspiration from NME’s design as I feel it is a very clever way to display the contents. This text makes my magazine seem more authentic with a website link to follow ‘EMERGE.COM’. It shows I have other areas within the media in this case a website, where my magazine can further be promoted for example showing new bands via videos. This is a Q contents page. I found that this image in particular was very enticing in drawing the attention of the audience therefore, I used this idea by cutting out images of artists for my magazine.
In what ways does my magazine, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products? The Double Page Spread: I used a similar idea an NME double page spread I created a ‘torn’ look to make my magazine look more authentic and appealing to my target audience. I included social network sites within my double page spread further promoting the band ‘the times'. This also links in with my ‘tech savvy younger generation target audience. Each if these photos feature the artists looking directly at the reader, making them feel closer. The border around the photos ties in the colour scheme giving a clean cut mature look to the magazine. I have included a link to the ‘EMERGE’ website – EMERGE.COM/LIVE with a caption ‘to get your tickets for The Times UK September tour’. This further promotes the band and the emerge website to sell tickets. I have further promoted my magazine as, I have added the title of my magazine in the same font and colour further raising awareness of my magazine. I have also put ‘Winners of best live band at EMERGE AWARDS Pull quote to entice the audience into reading the rest of the double page spread in addition to this, I have tried to link it to my target audience ‘We love the Arctic Monkeys’ as they are a popular indie/alternative group and readers could relate to this.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? My preliminary task: From looking back at my preliminary task I feel I have made a lot of progress. My cover image is a lot more appealing as, my band are facing the audience whereas in my previous cover the student is not interacting with the audience in anyway. My cover lines are bright and appealing following the same theme of colours throughout. The use of the checkered border completes this look along with the barcode and price tag adding to the authenticity of the magazine itself. The ‘FREE POSTERS’ puff is included to entice my target audience by including using photos of bands within the indie/alternative rock genre further promoting bands. The overall outlook of my magazine has improved as, I feel I have made a professional looking magazine that represents social groups within my target audience.
