Practical information notes to Parties on the proceedings of the COP 12 High-Level Segment
(20–21 October 2015)
A. Opening ceremonies (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
The opening ceremony will take place in the Auditorium (entrance on second and third floors) on 20 October 2015 at
10 a.m. Delegations are invited to be seated by 9.45 a.m., given the security surrounding the area in the light of the
level of officials attending the opening ceremonies.
It will be a free seating pattern and no name plates will be attributed to delegations.
The opening ceremony will feature statements by interest and regional groups as well as by a representative of the
Civil Society Organizations. Those who will speak in the opening ceremony are kindly invited to proceed to the VIP
section of the Auditorium (front rows), where the Host country Protocol will seat them. This will facilitate the
speakers to make a quick walk to the lectern from which they will issue their statements.
B. Parallel round tables (3 – 6 p.m.)
Ministers and other heads of delegation will hold discussions in three parallel ministerial round tables, organized as
follows:

Delegates are kindly requested to register at the registration desk, after which they will collect their name plate at the
entrance of each respective meeting room.
At each round table 30 seats are exclusively reserved for participants at the ministerial level and other high-level
officials. These will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.
Each round table discussion will be co-chaired by a minister from a UNCCD country Party. The deliberations will be
facilitated by a moderator and will be enriched by invited speakers. The subsequent discussions and audience
interaction will form the core of the high-level segment’s round table deliberations.

The discussion is open for participants at ministerial level and other high level officials. Heads of delegations, United
Nations organizations and Intergovernmental Organizations may also participate. High-level interventions will be
given priority.
Participants are encouraged to actively engage in the discussion and debate rather than deliver a prepared speech or
statement. Prepared speeches and statements can be given to the secretariat for later web posting. Simultaneous
interpretation is provided for all 6 UN languages plus Turkish. The Chairs of the Round tables will report their
summaries of the proceedings to the plenary on Wednesday 21 October 2015 during the closing ceremony.
C. Interactive dialogue sessions will be held on Wednesday 21 October 2015 (10 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.)

The closing ceremony will take place in the Plenary Hall. It will be convened on Wednesday 21 October 2015 from
5.30 to 6 p.m. after the adjournment of the Stakeholders Dialogue and the Parliamentarian Round table, whose chairs
will also be invited to introduce the summaries of their discussion.

SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT EXHIBITION
Interested parties are invited to visit the exhibition area (SLM Expo) where stands from various organizations
working on sustainable land management are set up. The info stands offer documentation, reading materials and
other hand-outs.
Also in the exhibition area will be the UNCCD secretariat stand with the UNCCD knowledge products, featuring the
Capacity Building Marketplace, the UNCCD Knowledge Platform SKBP, and the UNCCD Library. You can try out
these products at the stand, pick up promotional materials and leave your feedback.
The exhibition area is located in front of the Armada shopping mall (to the right of the street entrance where the
restaurants are located). It is approximately 500m from the Congresium.
RIO CONVENTION PAVILION
The Rio Conventions Pavilion is a platform for raising awareness about the latest practices and scientific findings on
the benefits of the coordinated implementation of the UNCCD, the United Nations Framework Convention to
Combat Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Rio Conventions
Pavilion will be held on the Congresium's fourth Floor Terrace.

Programme throughout the day – Land for Life Day
UNCCD secretariat
The Land for Life Day celebrates the work of people who are achieving sustainable land management. Winners of
the Land for Life award will be introduced and their work highlighted. A film by Director John Liu will be shown.
A discussion with the director will follow. Drylands Ambassador Dennis Garrity and other presenters will talk about
awareness raising and ways to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality in a TED Talk style presentation. Executive
Secretary Monique Barbut and the National Focal point for Turkey will also address participants. The day will end
with an evening reception at 18:15. Coffee and lunch are provided.
STATEMENTS OF DELEGATIONS
By its latest legislation, namely General Assembly resolution 69/250 on the Pattern of Conferences, the General
Assembly reiterates its request to ensure the provision of high-quality conference services to member States and
other participants in official United Nations meetings.
To ensure the smooth running of the meetings, participants need to maintain a normal speed whenever delivering
speeches or making statements, so that the required high-quality simultaneous interpretation services can be
delivered to the entire satisfaction of all concerned.
Delegations are requested to provide 20 copies of their statements to the Conference Officers in the Plenary Hall. It
is proposed that a five-minute time limit be set for these statements.
INTERNET ACCESS AT THE CONFERENCE CENTER
Wireless internet is available to all participants at the conference center. The designated wireless network is COP
12. Participants are required to enter their surname and accreditation number on the login page (as printed on
participants’ badges) to gain access to the internet.
