The survey examined resident perceptions of growth in the George Washington region, which includes Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline counties. Key findings included:
- Respondents rated their quality of life positively overall but lower in Caroline County.
- Respondents believe the region's history, natural beauty, and proximity to DC make it a good place to live.
- Only 24% think the region is moving in the right direction regarding growth.
- 70% believe growth is currently causing problems but smart growth could help.
- Centers, corridors and open spaces is the most preferred development pattern.
- Yet 43% believe growth is currently decentralized across the region.

• An online survey was designed and conducted in order
to meet the objectives of this research
• The survey link was emailed:

– By SIR to a list of 470 residents who agreed to participate in
future research studies after having completed the 2009 Long
Range Transportation Plan
– By GWRC to regional organizations/businesses, who in turn were
asked to forward to their membership/distribution lists*
• The median length of the survey was 19 minutes
• The survey was conducted from September 14 –
October 31, 2010
• 240 respondents participated in the study
• A sample size of 240 has a margin of error of +/- 6.33

beauty of the area – both are reasons why residents think the
George Washington Region is a good place to live. While some

of George Washington Region residents, and the ability to get

traffic during peak travel times. Make sure plans include access to
regional trains (such as VRE) and commuter lots.
4. Affordable housing is key. Respondents want a mix of different
types of homes.
