1. Leadership
By Elaine Zedack
“The real leader has no need to lead-- he is content to point the way.”
- Henry Miller
2. Famous World Leaders
• Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Mahatma Gandhi
• Nelson Mandela
• General Patton
• President John F. Kennedy
• General Norman Schwarzkopf
• President Frankin D. Roosevelt
3. What made them great leaders?
These were the people that influenced history
with their goals. They had dreams and the
courage to pursue those dreams. Not only did
they pursue their dreams but they also
influenced other people and even nations to
join their cases.
4. How does this translate to Hospitality
Management?
A good leader in Hospitality Management
demonstrates the same basic qualities as these
great leaders in history. A Hospitality leader
possesses charisma and the foresight to be able to
see their dreams become a reality. The prefect
hospitality leader has the skills to manage a group
of people, motivate them to do well, and build
their decision-making ability. A true leader in this
industry should be able to see when their team
no longer needs his or her guidance and move on.
5. What skills should Hospitality Leaders
possess?
• Organizational Skills
Good organizational skills are something that managers should possess
and leaders don’t necessarily need. However, it is my opinion that a truly great
leader should possess every skill a manager has and more. Organizational skills
are a basic need that leaders must possess in order to be able to lead their
team in the best possible way. Without organizational skills papers can get lost
along with information that could be a vital part to the puzzle the team is
trying to solve.
• Charisma
Charisma is a must for a good leader because this is the ability to
persuade people to want to achieve the dream. Charisma is what influences
thoughts and ideas. It is the quality that leaders must have in order for their
ideas to be heard and to carry the weight needed to influence a person’s
thoughts.
6. • Good Speaker
Articulation is key to getting into the minds of the people on your
team. It is the quality of a good speaker that forces people to stop talking
themselves and focus on you without realizing what they’re doing. Leaders
are made when people listen and understand what’s being said so without
the quality of a good speaker it is much harder to become a leader and
gain the respect of those around you.
• Courage
New ideas are often scary. They can seem like daunting tasks that no
single team can accomplish. However, leaders must know that a goal can
be reached and they must be able to step up and carry out the smaller
goals needed to accomplish the larger one without fear of failure.
7. Conclusion
Leadership is an important attribute that must in
every aspect of society. However, in the
business world and, consequently, the
Hospitality world, leadership is a must.
Without leaders we would never advance in
any area of life. Keeping the status quo would
be alright with everyone. Can you imagine
living in such a world?
8. “A leader is a dealer in hope.”
- Napoleon Bonaparte
