The causal relationship between urbanization and economic growth in US: Fresh evidence from the TodaâYamamoto approach * Dr.ANDISHEH SALIMINEZHAD1, Dr.PEJMAN BAHRAMIAN2 1Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Near East University, Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, Mersin 10, Turkey 2Senior Economist, Cambridge Resources International, Inc. (CRI), MA, USA. Email: andisheh.saliminezhad@neu.edu.tr , E mail: pejman.bahramian@cri-world.com A B S T R A C T This study aims to investigate the causal relationships between urbanization and economic growth for United State during the period 1960- 2017. We utilize the time series technique known as Toda-Yamamoto method, which efficiently works even with the variables co-integrated of an arbitrary order. Empirical findings suggest a unidirectional Granger causality running from urbanization to economic growth, and no Granger causality detected from economic growth to urbanization for the long run. The findings prove that urbanization is nominated as a main driving force of economic growth. Introduction In the human literature, one of the most significant key factors in the development process is urbanization (Bairoch, 1988). In fact, urbanization and development are regarded as two interrelated and interdependent processes that cannot take place without each other. In spite of having such dependent relationship, the causal link between these two variables has not been truly clarified (Jacobs, 1969). Urbanization is regarded as both result and cause for the economic development (Gallup et al., 1999). It was proved that the proportion of the urban population in the world had a 30-percent rise in 1950 and it was gradually increased up to 50 percent in 2010 (United Nations, 2007).

3 Among the many forces shaping Chinaâs course of development, argu- ably none will prove more significant in the long run than the rapid emergence and explosive growth of the Chinese middle class. Chinaâs ongoing economic transition from a relatively poor, developing nation to a middle-class country has been one of the most fascinating human dramas of our time. Never in history have so many people made so much economic progress in one or two generations. Just twenty years ago a distinct socioeconomic middle class was virtually nonexistent in the Peopleâs Republic of China (PRC), but today a large number of Chinese citizens, especially in coastal cities, own private property and personal automobiles, have growing financial assets, and are able to take vacations abroad and send their children overseas for school. This trans- formation is likely to have wide-ranging implications for every aspect of Chinese life, especially the countryâs long-term economic prospects, energy consumption, and environmental well-being. The importance of Chinaâs emerging middle class, of course, extends far beyond the realm of economics. This volume focuses on the socio- political ramifications of the birth and growth of the Chinese middle class over the past two decades. The central question is: What impacts, ChaPtEr onE Introduction: the rise of the Middle Class in the Middle Kingdom ChEnG LI I would like to thank Sally Carman, Jordan Lee, Robert OâBrien, and Matthew Platkin for their very helpful comments on an earlier version of this chapter. 01-0405-8 ch1.indd 3 10/7/10 3:42 PM 4â ChEnG LI current and future, might Chinaâs emerging middle class have on the countryâs social structure and political system? Following this broad line of inquiry, the volume sets itself four tasks: âTo examine the status of research on social stratification and social mobility in China âTo identify the major issues and trends related to the Chinese middle class âTo compare the Chinese middle class with its counterparts in other countries âAnd to assess the values, worldviews, and potential political roles of the Chinese middle class as well as its likely impact on Chinaâs rise on the world stage. This introductory chapter provides an overview of the political signifi- cance and historical background of the emerging Chinese middle class and summarizes the existing literature and ongoing debates on the topic. The Sociopolitical Significance of a Chinese Middle Class Early studies of newly affluent groups in China, including the nascent middle class, tend to emphasize the status quoâoriented, risk-averse nature of these prime beneficiaries of economic reform. However, more recent studies (including many by PRC scholars) suggest that this may simply be a transitory phase in the development of the middle class. There already appears to be widespread resentment among the middle class toward offi- cial corruption and the stateâs monopoly ...

Critical Debates Neoliberalism and Democracy in Latin America: A Mixed Record Kurt Weyland ABSTRACT This essay argues that neoliberalism has strengthened the sustain- ability of democracy in Latin America but limited its quality. Drastic market reform seems to have abetted the survival of competitive civil- ian rule through its external and internal repercussions. By opening up Latin American countries to the world economy, neoliberalism has exposed them to more of the international pressures for preserving democracy that intensified with the end of the Cold War. At the same time, the move to market economics has weakened leftist parties, trade unions, and other proponents of radical socioeconomic reform, reassuring elites and preventing them from undermining democracy. But tighter external economic constraints limit governmentsâ latitude and thereby restrict the effective range of democratic choice; and the weakening of parties and interest associations has depressed political participation and eroded government accountability. The available evidence therefore suggests that neoliberalism has been a mixed blessing for Latin American democracies. How compatible are neoliberalism and democracy in Latin America? How do economic adjustment and market reform affect political liberty and competitive civilian rule? This question is highly relevant for the future of the region. The experience of First World countries might suggest that democracy and the market system tend to go together; after all, no democracy has existed in nations that did not have the basic con- tours of capitalism; namely, a large extent of private ownership and competition as the main mechanism of economic coordination (Lind- blom 1977, 161â69). Latin Americaâs experience, however, used to differ from this happy convergence. Given the severe social inequality plagu- ing the region, political liberalism historically tended to trigger calls for social redistribution and state interventionism; that is, for significant deviations from economic liberalism. The free-market system, by con- trast, used to be an elitist project that was often associated with support for or acquiescence to authoritarian political rule. During long stretches of Latin American history, therefore, a clear tension existed between 135 chf political democracy and economic liberalism (Sheahan 1987, chap. 12; Gibson 1992, 168â71). Furthermore, even if the free-market systemâthat is, the end prod- uct of neoliberal reformâis compatible with democracy, the process of neoliberal reform might not be; after all, it involves the forceful dis- mantling of the established development model, and may therefore require a significant concentration of political power. Indeed, Latin America specialists used to have strong concerns that neoliberalism would destroy democracy. These fears reflected the experience of the 1980s, when many new democratic regimes in the region postponed economic stabilization and structu ...

We have entered a new era in world history, a post-post-Cold War era that holds both great promise and great peril for the United States, its allies, and everyone else. We now can call this a "Westphalian-Plus" world, in which nation-states will have to engage on two distinct levels: dealing with other nation-states as before, and dealing with a vast array of important nonstate actors. This era calls for a new approach to national strategy called "dynamic stability." The authors of this paperâAtlantic Council Vice President and Scowcroft Center Director Barry Pavel and Senior Fellow Peter Engelke, with the help of Assistant Director Alex Wardâkick off the Atlantic Council Strategy Paper series by telling the United States to seek stability while leveraging dynamic trends at the same time. The central task facing America is "to harness change in order to save the system," meaning the preservation of the rules-based international order that has benefited billions around the world, including Americans themselves, since 1945. Within its pages, the paper outlines the components of strategy in a swiftly-changing world.

dependency and world-systems theories Christopher Chase-Dunn Dependency approaches emerged out of Latin America in the 1960s in reaction to moderniza- tion theories of development. Dependentistas attributed the difficulties of development in the global South to the legacies of the long history of colonialism as well as contemporary international power relations. This approach suggested that international inequalities were socially structured and that hierarchy is a cen- tral feature of the global system of societies. The world-systems perspective is a strategy for explaining social change that focuses on whole intersocietal systems rather than single societies. The main insight is that important interaction networks (trade, information flows, alliances, and fighting) have woven polities and cultures together since the beginning of human social evolution. Explanations of social change need to take intersocietal systems (world-systems) as the units that evolve. How- ever, intersocietal interaction networks were rather small when transportation was mainly a matter of hiking with a pack. Globalization, in the sense of the expansion and intensification of larger interaction networks, has been increasing for millennia, albeit unevenly and in waves. The intellectual history of world-systems theory has roots in classical sociology, Marxian political economy, and the thinking of the dependentistas. But in explicit form the world- systems perspective emerged only in the 1970s when Samir Amin, AndreĚ Gunder Frank, and Immanuel Wallerstein began to formulate the concepts and to narrate the analytic history of the modern world-system. The idea of the whole system ought to mean that all the human interaction networks, small and large, from the household to global trade, constitute the world-system. It is not just a matter of ââinternational relationsââ or global- scale institutions such as the World Bank. Rather, at the present time, the world-system is all the people of the earth and all their cultural, economic, and political institutions and the interactions and connections among them. The world-systems perspective looks at human institutions over long periods of time and employs the spatial scales that are required for comprehending these whole interaction sys- tems. The modern world-system can be under- stood structurally as a stratification system composed of economically, culturally, and mili- tarily dominant core societies (themselves in competition with one another), and dependent peripheral and semiperipheral regions. Some dependent regions have been successful in improving their positions in the larger core/ periphery hierarchy, while most have simply maintained their peripheral and semiperipheral positions. This structural perspective on world history allows us to analyze the cyclical features of social change and the long-term patterns of development in historical and comparativ.

China is passing through massive transformation; from a command to a market economy, from an economy based on agriculture to one based on manufacturing and services, from one with high fertility and low longevity to one faced with OCDE style low fertility and high longevity, and from an economy that was almost totally closed to one that, today, even before her accession to the WTO, is much more open than most countries at the same level of income. This vast movement of transformation started on a very simple principle frequently stated by Deng Xioaping: âPoverty is not socialismâ. Prosperity was the new face of the socialism according to Deng Xiaopingâs famous dictum: to get rich is glorious. In the past socialism used to mean government planning, for the new China, it means common prosperity.

Daniel Guelen E-mail: daniel.guelen@columbia.edu Published May 4, 2020 Abstract Chinaâs rise brings various issues to the international stage. Terms such as the Thucydides Trap and Trade Wars have become common language and many fear for conflict between the United States and China. Especially in the 21st century, the relationship between the US and China will define the world. However, this paper argues that China does not pose a threat to the United States and the international order as the economic, military, and political circumstances do not facilitate such a great power tension. By directly analyzing the relationship between the US and China in these three areas, two policy recommendations can be drawn. This paper brings forth a dual grand strategy for the US to improve and support its domestic position to compete globally and present a more accessible alternative to lead internationally by building a more inclusive coalition and deterring some of Chinaâs aggressions in South East Asia. As the world becomes more multipolar, the ability to balance power, engage developing nations, and build alliances will prove to be critical to any strategy. Keywords: China; United States; foreign policy; great power tension; international security; Thucydides Trap; international order; trade wars; counterhegemony; South East Asia.

Liu He (Harvard MPA´95) compares two global crises: the Great Depression of 1929 and the Great Recession of 2008. This study was published in China in the summer of 2012. The objective of the project was to understand past events in order âto navigate the ongoing financial crisis safely and respond more proactively by learning from history.â With the perspective of an insider who supported Chinese leaders in making choices that allowed Chinaâs economy not only to weather the crisis, but to outperform all other economies since the crisis, he provides a nuanced account of the past and astute clues for the future. While he doesnât say so, the brute fact is that since the 2008 financial crisis, nearly 40% of all the growth in the global economy has taken place in just one country: China, despite its having only 15% of the worldâs population and less than 20% of its income. In our research paper titled "Qualitative Analysis on Tax Evasion and Reasons for Reluctance to Join ATL in Pakistan," we delve into the intricate dynamics of tax compliance and explore the underlying reasons why individuals in Pakistan might hesitate to become a part of the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) within the framework of business law and taxation. With a multidisciplinary approach, our team of five researchers embarked on an in-depth exploration of tax evasion behaviors and the factors influencing them. Through qualitative analysis, we aimed to unravel the complex interplay of socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors shaping tax compliance attitudes among Pakistani taxpayers. Drawing on a diverse range of qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and content analysis, we gathered rich insights from a diverse sample of individuals representing various sectors of the economy. By immersing ourselves in the lived experiences and perceptions of taxpayers, tax advisors, and legal experts, we uncovered nuanced perspectives on tax evasion practices and attitudes toward ATL membership. Our findings highlight the multifaceted nature of tax evasion in Pakistan, shedding light on both the motivations driving non-compliance and the barriers to ATL enrollment. From perceived inefficiencies in the tax system to cultural norms and trust deficits in governmental institutions, our research identifies a myriad of factors contributing to tax evasion behavior and reluctance to join ATL. Furthermore, our study offers valuable implications for policymakers, tax authorities, and business stakeholders seeking to enhance tax compliance and foster a culture of transparency and accountability in Pakistan's taxation landscape. By addressing the underlying drivers of tax evasion and promoting the benefits of ATL membership, policymakers can design more effective strategies to broaden the tax base and promote sustainable economic development. In conclusion, our research paper represents a comprehensive endeavor to deepen our understanding of tax compliance dynamics in Pakistan and elucidate the complexities surrounding ATL enrollment. By unraveling the intricacies of tax evasion behaviors and attitudes, we hope to contribute to informed policymaking and foster a culture of tax compliance and integrity in Pakistan's business and taxation environment.
