DEERNS BRINGS CONCEPTS TO LIFE
Deerns Green Datacenters

Deerns designs a breakthrough
datacenter with a PUE of 1.26
The project combines state of the art technology, innovative concepts and top-end datacenter performance,

and Gartner reviews the datacenter as ‘Best in Class’. However, Deerns has already designed the next generation

datacenter with a PUE of 1.15, or less.

A leading financial services provider relied on Deerns to design The result is astonishing: The datacenter has a PUE of 1.26,
its twin datacenters. The development is characterized by the with 2.0 being the existing average and 1.5 being the current

Table 1: Financial information on the GC-DC© concept

In summary, the GC-DC© concept features:
• a PUE of 1.15 and 100% free cooling up to 21°C / 70°F 1;
• improved reliability and availability, no possibilities for total
  cooling system failure;
• a completely modular cooling system, for improved
  phasing of the investment;
• a simpler system with easier maintenance and
  operation.

Thus, a company that operates a green
datacenter based on the GC-DC©
concept has a major competitive
advantage due to lower
operational expenditures,
even without taking into
consideration the

The most has been stretched to its limit in terms of energy efficiency. significant energy consumption measures incorporated in the Thus, the next step is to rethink the cooling needs of a datacenter design are: and how to best satisfy those needs. With this goal in mind, • highly efficient hot and cold aisle separation Deerns’ datacenter specialists have developed the GC-DC© • application of cold/heat storage to enlarge the use of concept (Green Cooling for DataCenters), an innovative and free cooling intelligent new combination of existing, proven technologies. • collection of rainwater and re-use for the datacenter It is, however, a different and especially much more efficient way cooling towers of ‘getting the heat outside’. • governing of the datacenter by “lights out” principle, which will reduce energy consumption of lighting and other Due to the much more direct transfer of the heat developed in ancillary systems the computer racks to the outdoor air, free cooling can be used • re-using of heat from datacenter for heating of office complex for a much greater part of the year. When the outdoor temperature • green roof to minimize solar gain through roof. becomes too high (greater than ca. 21°C / 70°F 1), the system is aided by a compression cooling unit located outside the computer room. The overall system is built in modular compart- ments, ‘cooling cells’, which are totally independent of one another, so full cooling system failures are no longer possible and no water-bearing systems for cooling are located in the computer room: better availability and reliability through simplicity. Because of the modular nature of the system, investment costs for the entire cooling infrastructure can be postponed in line with the growth of energy demand during the operational phase: pay-as-you-grow. The improved phasing of the investment is a valuable asset, especially given the present uncertainties with project finance and sales projections. Basically, GC-DC© makes a “greener datacenter” the best value proposition for any datacenter host. Table 1: Financial information on the GC-DC© concept In summary, the GC-DC© concept features: • a PUE of 1.15 and 100% free cooling up to 21°C / 70°F 1; • improved reliability and availability, no possibilities for total cooling system failure; • a completely modular cooling system, for improved phasing of the investment; • a simpler system with easier maintenance and operation. Thus, a company that operates a green datacenter based on the GC-DC© concept has a major competitive advantage due to lower operational expenditures, even without taking into consideration the Conclusion In recent years, a reduction of about 60% of cooling energy consumption has been achieved by Deerns through tuning the system design with respect to energy consumption and by incorporating add-on features as an aquifer for increased energy efficiency. Today, a reduction of 80% of cooling energy consumption is possible with the Deerns’ GC-DC© concept. For tomorrow, Deerns is already developing the next step…
