INTRODUCTION
This assignment is an integration project with Architecture
Studio 5. The aim of this project is to students to consider
the construction aspects throughtout the design process.
The design project is a community library in Jalan Haji
Salleh, Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.
In this particular design, the library emphasizes the impor-
tance of natural light and acoustic quality. Large opening
can be found throughout the library. As the site is located
among a shophouse, the facade facing the context is only
limited to the north and south elevation. Therefore, the
opening also acts an interaction between the interior and
the exterior.

MATERIALS
CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
1. Positioning of components on readied
foundation
2. Erection of components (columns and
beams)
3. Installation of bracing to stabilize struc-
ture
4. Site bolting or welding of components
5. Addition of substructure (girder, joist,-
metal descking, etc)
Mild steel, also known as carbon steel, is a
type of steel that contain a small percent-
age of carbon. The steel with a higher car-
bon content has greater strength and lower
melting point. However, it reduces ductility
and weldability.
• Long-life durability
• Lightweight
• Elimination of formwork reduces construc-
tion waste
• High strength-to-weight ratio allows less
members to support greater load
• Provide large span space at low cost
• Small space used provide freedom of space
• Prefabricated members reduce on-site con-
struction time
• Bend instead of crack under great force
wind and seismic load, greatly reduce the
risk of sudden collapse
• Lessen structural load and subsequently-
material cost
• Environmental friendly
• Highly susceptible to fire. At 500o
C, struc-
tural strength is halved. Prevention can be
achieved with addition of fire resistive.
• Prone to corrosion in humid environment.
Prevention can be achieved with applica-
tion of waterproof coating

A lightweight construction with a grid-like
skeleton of vertical and horizontal members
in which the substructure are attached.
JSPL has pioneered the production of medi-
um and heavy hot rolled parallel flange beams
and column sections in India. These sections
are cost-effective through savings in steel con-
sumption and provide ultimate design flexibil-
ity to the structural designers.
Steel frame construction allows the design
with a long narrow nature to have lesser num-
ber of components used as compared to con-
ventional concrete construction, thus provide
more design flexibility and daylighting.

Composite steel deck is the assimilation of
twoload-carryingstructuralmembers.Com-
mon examples are conrete fill and girder.
Established in Seoul, Korea, Duckshin Housing
is company specialized in steel construction
materials, deck plates, deck construction, iron
works and import business.
The thin yet soundproof property is a essential
factor in the library design. This construction
technique also facilitates large space span,
which enable easy space planning.

1. Installation of structural joist
2. Fixation of laminated glass panel and
firerated glass onto the joist by pressure
bar on all four sides
3. Purlins span between the joist to provide
interconnecting drainage and conden-
sate channels
4. Addition of cover cap as finishing
1. Structural laminated glass panel
2. Silicon sealant
3. Firerated glass
4. Structural joist
5. Pressure bar
Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that
sandwich an interlayer between two pieces of
glass. The interlayer is typicallypolyvinyl butyral
or ethylene-vinyl acetate. In the event of break-
ing, it holds the shattered glass pieces together
and appear as web of cracks. Laminated glass is
heavier than common glass. It also provides UV
protection and sound insulation.
Glazed roof system is highly compatible with
steel frame construction to span a wide area.
The design’s north-south orientation without
any westward or eastward facade also poses a
high demand of natural lighting for comfort-
able reading.

3. Mineral wool
4. Breather membrane
5. Gypsum sheathing
6. Timber panel
7. Timber stud
8. Laminated glass panels with stainless
steel spider fitting
Beside fufilling all basic requirement of a wall
system, the freedom of final finishing is an im-
portant feature. The construction of external
wall is also versatile and time-saving.
SITE CONTEXT
1. Cladding of steel column with a protective
layer of fire resistant board
2. Erection of common timber stud along with
top and bottom wall plate
3. Addition of bracing to reduce lateral buckling
if necessary.
4. Insert mineral wool in stud space for insula-
tion.

External wall insulation systems are gener-
ally comprised of an insulant, a fixing and a
final finish. The main framework is typically
made of steel or timber. Waterproof and in-
sulative material are generally included. The
choice of the exterior and interior finishing
is pretty wide and flexible.

Double skin can used fro many purpose. In this
case, the skin serve as to introduce different
level of brightness and texture in reaction to
the weather. It also add interest to the view
from interior to exterior.
SITE CONTEXT
There are many different types of dou-
ble-skin facade that serve different purpos-
es. Initially, the double-skin facade is a sys-
tem of building consisting of two skins, or
facades, placed in such a way that air flows
in the intermediate cavity. The ventilation of
the cavity can be natural, fan supported or
mechanical.

FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 1
SOUTH ELEVATION [FRONT]
SCALE 1:100
DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE A
Void
The exposed area are mostly curtain win-
dow without the cover of double-skin fa-
cade. These spaces need lights and view
more than privacy. These space are also
double volume space, the sound echo less
thus acoustic aspect is not as emphasized.
FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 2
SOUTH ELEVATION [BACK]
SCALE 1:100
DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE A
Solid
Latticed double-skin facade allows only dif-
fused natural light to penetrate. Only opening
that need privacy is placed behind the latticed
skin, such as office area, toilets and private
study room. Most importantly, the latticed skin
can dilute the exterior noise from entering the
private area that need silence more.
FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 1
NORTH ELEVATION [FRONT]
SCALE 1:100
DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE
Solid
Solid wall without any openings. Allocate to
private area. As solid wall does not allowed
natural light penetration, they are designed as
long narrow strip. Therefore, the area with sol-
id wall can still accept minimal diffused light
from adjacent space with openings.
FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 2
NORTH ELEVATION [BACK]
SCALE 1:100
DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE B
Void
The openings of finned double-skin facade
is larger. A balance of natural light and shade
by fin is achieved. Therefore, large area of
void can be applied on the facade. The fin
of the double-skin also framed the view ro
exterior.

  • 3. INTRODUCTION This assignment is an integration project with Architecture Studio 5. The aim of this project is to students to consider the construction aspects throughtout the design process. The design project is a community library in Jalan Haji Salleh, Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. In this particular design, the library emphasizes the impor- tance of natural light and acoustic quality. Large opening can be found throughout the library. As the site is located among a shophouse, the facade facing the context is only limited to the north and south elevation. Therefore, the opening also acts an interaction between the interior and the exterior. N
  • 4. CULTURE FOREST PRECEDENT STUDY - STEEL FRAME CONSTRUCTION ADVANTAGESMANUFACTURER DISADVANTAGES MATERIALS CONSTRUCTION PROCESS 1. Positioning of components on readied foundation 2. Erection of components (columns and beams) 3. Installation of bracing to stabilize struc- ture 4. Site bolting or welding of components 5. Addition of substructure (girder, joist,- metal descking, etc) Mild steel, also known as carbon steel, is a type of steel that contain a small percent- age of carbon. The steel with a higher car- bon content has greater strength and lower melting point. However, it reduces ductility and weldability. • Long-life durability • Lightweight • Elimination of formwork reduces construc- tion waste • High strength-to-weight ratio allows less members to support greater load • Provide large span space at low cost • Small space used provide freedom of space • Prefabricated members reduce on-site con- struction time • Bend instead of crack under great force wind and seismic load, greatly reduce the risk of sudden collapse • Lessen structural load and subsequently- material cost • Environmental friendly • Highly susceptible to fire. At 500o C, struc- tural strength is halved. Prevention can be achieved with addition of fire resistive. • Prone to corrosion in humid environment. Prevention can be achieved with applica- tion of waterproof coating Architect : Unsanddong Architects Location : Seoul, South Korea Use : Welfare, education and research, culture, nursery school Site Area : 1694.0m2 Bldg Area : 1001.8m2 A lightweight construction with a grid-like skeleton of vertical and horizontal members in which the substructure are attached. JSPL has pioneered the production of medi- um and heavy hot rolled parallel flange beams and column sections in India. These sections are cost-effective through savings in steel con- sumption and provide ultimate design flexibil- ity to the structural designers. Steel frame construction allows the design with a long narrow nature to have lesser num- ber of components used as compared to con- ventional concrete construction, thus provide more design flexibility and daylighting. • 5. MANCHESTER CIVIL JUSTICE CENTRE PRECEDENT STUDY - COMPOSITE STEEL FLOOR SYSTEM ADVANTAGESMANUFACTURER DISADVANTAGES COMPONENTS CONSTRUCTION PROCESS 1. Installation of corrugated steel deck to the structural steel below 2. Shear connector is welded or nailed to the beam 3. Pouring of concrete with the side of the floor bordered by a curb of galvanized steel. 50% percent of concrete is saved as compared to conventional concrete floor slab 4. Mineral wool and plasterboard are gen- erally associated to provide better acous- tic and thermal quality. 1. Soldered connector 2. Poured concrete 3. Reinforcement mesh 4. Bosses on the sidewalls 5. Joists 6. Corrugated sheet of galvanized steel deck 7. Beam • Lightweight • Speed in construction • Versatile, can be integrate with various oth- er feature • Act as tensile reinforecement during fire • Stabilize structure against lateral buckling • Good heat insulation • Good sound insulation • Require delicate handling to prevent mois- ture penetration • Different contractor needed for installation • Specialized installation increase field cost Architect : Denton Corker Marshall Location : Manchester, UK Project Year : 2008 Bldg Area : 34000m2 Composite steel deck is the assimilation of twoload-carryingstructuralmembers.Com- mon examples are conrete fill and girder. Established in Seoul, Korea, Duckshin Housing is company specialized in steel construction materials, deck plates, deck construction, iron works and import business. The thin yet soundproof property is a essential factor in the library design. This construction technique also facilitates large space span, which enable easy space planning. • 6. MYOENJI COLUMBARIUM PRECEDENT STUDY - GLAZED ROOF SYSTEM ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES COMPONENTSMATERIAL • Light penetration • Advantage of wide visual field • Good sound absorption • Balance the solid aspect of design • Replace the function of window • Eliminate dependence on artificial lighting • Costly • High maintenance • Poor heat insulation • High embodied energy Architect : Furumori Koichi Architectural Design Studio Location : Fukuoka, Japan Bldg Area : 335m2 1. Installation of structural joist 2. Fixation of laminated glass panel and firerated glass onto the joist by pressure bar on all four sides 3. Purlins span between the joist to provide interconnecting drainage and conden- sate channels 4. Addition of cover cap as finishing 1. Structural laminated glass panel 2. Silicon sealant 3. Firerated glass 4. Structural joist 5. Pressure bar Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that sandwich an interlayer between two pieces of glass. The interlayer is typicallypolyvinyl butyral or ethylene-vinyl acetate. In the event of break- ing, it holds the shattered glass pieces together and appear as web of cracks. Laminated glass is heavier than common glass. It also provides UV protection and sound insulation. Glazed roof system is highly compatible with steel frame construction to span a wide area. The design’s north-south orientation without any westward or eastward facade also poses a high demand of natural lighting for comfort- able reading. CONSTRUCTION PROCESS SITE CONTEXT 1 22 3 4 5
  • 7. PRECEDENT STUDY - GLAZED EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION SYSTEM ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES COMPONENTS CONSTRUCTION PROCESS • Accomodate large area of facade • Advantage of wide visual field • Control on natural light penetration • Flexibility in design • Thermal efficient • Offsite prefabricated components reduce delays and erection time • Reduction of site waste • Dimensional accuracy • Complexity of material • Expensive Architect : Sou Fujimoto Location : Tokyo, Japan Project Year : 2010 Bldg Area : 2883.18m2 1. Wall plate 2. Interior finish 3. Mineral wool 4. Breather membrane 5. Gypsum sheathing 6. Timber panel 7. Timber stud 8. Laminated glass panels with stainless steel spider fitting Beside fufilling all basic requirement of a wall system, the freedom of final finishing is an im- portant feature. The construction of external wall is also versatile and time-saving. SITE CONTEXT 1. Cladding of steel column with a protective layer of fire resistant board 2. Erection of common timber stud along with top and bottom wall plate 3. Addition of bracing to reduce lateral buckling if necessary. 4. Insert mineral wool in stud space for insula- tion. 5. Installation of gypsum sheathing and breather membrane to prevent moisture penetration. 6. Installation of timber panel as finish 7. Connection of glass panels to the timber fin on the timber panel with spider fitting. 8. Application of silicon sealant between glass panels External wall insulation systems are gener- ally comprised of an insulant, a fixing and a final finish. The main framework is typically made of steel or timber. Waterproof and in- sulative material are generally included. The choice of the exterior and interior finishing is pretty wide and flexible. • 8. PRECEDENT STUDY - DOUBLE-SKIN WALL SYSTEM ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES • Diffuse natural light penetration • Framing of view to exterior • Introduce ventilation into the interior • Mitigate solar gain and decrease cooling load • High insulative value • Decrease in usable floor space • Condensation in interior • Increase in material and construction cost • Questionable thermal performance Architect : Cor & Asociados Location : Albacete, Spain Bldg Area : 4375m2 Double skin can used fro many purpose. In this case, the skin serve as to introduce different level of brightness and texture in reaction to the weather. It also add interest to the view from interior to exterior. SITE CONTEXT There are many different types of dou- ble-skin facade that serve different purpos- es. Initially, the double-skin facade is a sys- tem of building consisting of two skins, or facades, placed in such a way that air flows in the intermediate cavity. The ventilation of the cavity can be natural, fan supported or mechanical. TYPE OF SONSTRUCTION CENTRAL OFFICE OF FEDA CON- FEDERATION OF EMPLOYERS OF ALBACETE COMPONENTS
  • 9. FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 1 SOUTH ELEVATION [FRONT] SCALE 1:100 DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE A Void The exposed area are mostly curtain win- dow without the cover of double-skin fa- cade. These spaces need lights and view more than privacy. These space are also double volume space, the sound echo less thus acoustic aspect is not as emphasized.
  • 10. FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 2 SOUTH ELEVATION [BACK] SCALE 1:100 DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE A Solid Latticed double-skin facade allows only dif- fused natural light to penetrate. Only opening that need privacy is placed behind the latticed skin, such as office area, toilets and private study room. Most importantly, the latticed skin can dilute the exterior noise from entering the private area that need silence more.
  • 11. FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 1 NORTH ELEVATION [FRONT] SCALE 1:100 DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE Solid Solid wall without any openings. Allocate to private area. As solid wall does not allowed natural light penetration, they are designed as long narrow strip. Therefore, the area with sol- id wall can still accept minimal diffused light from adjacent space with openings.
  • 12. FACADE DESIGN SCHEME 2 NORTH ELEVATION [BACK] SCALE 1:100 DOUBLE-SKIN FACADE B Void The openings of finned double-skin facade is larger. A balance of natural light and shade by fin is achieved. Therefore, large area of void can be applied on the facade. The fin of the double-skin also framed the view ro exterior.
