4. COENCEPT
The theme of “KL WAITING STYLE” is “waiting”.
Waiting. The action of staying where one is or delaying action until a particular time or event.
Everyday people wait for different reason at different places. Everybody has different waiting
habits. These habits are not born with, they are learnt through observation. Since young, we
learnt many things through observing the people around us and waiting is one of them. The
waiting habits of the community we lived in are thus inherited by the next generation and so on
and so forth. Therefore, the waiting habits of people varied according to the location.
“KL WAITING STYLE” illustrated the various waiting habits of Kuala Lumpur community.
Specifically, it shows how the people interact with the surrounding elements when they wait.
These waiting habits have become an identity, a culture to the people here.
5. RESEARCH
Location
List of proposed waiting spaces:
•
Bus stops
•
Train stations
•
Market place
•
Traffic light
•
School
•
Reception counter
•
Bank
•
Market
Most of the proposed waiting spaces are transportation and services venue because these are
the places where there are more people nowadays. Transportation and services have a very high
demand due to globalization.
The location I choose is located in the city area because there are more people, which means
more people have to wait. The locations I have been to are all located in the Kuala Lumpur, the
capital city of Malaysia. There are also locations that are within walking distance from train
stations It is more convenient for me to travel using public transportation.
Location of photoshoot:
•
Central Market
•
Petaling Street
•
KL Sentral
•
Batu Cave
Photos
The photo are filtered and selected to fully exhibit the waiting habits of Kuala Lumpur residents
by following a few criteria.
-
Message
6. The person on the left is waiting for his friend but this photo
does not fully exhibit the unique waiting habit of Kuala Lumpur
residents. The waiting posture is too common and, thus the
message is not strong enough.
7. Background
The background of this photo is a indoor arcade which cannot
fully exhibit the Kuala Lumpur cityscape. It does not satisfy the
theme and will disrupt the message intended to display in the
photobook.
8. -
Composition
In the photo, the boy is waiting at the counter but the focus is
placed wrongly. There are too many signage in the photo which
reduce the visual weight of the boy because the boy appears
much smaller compared to the signage.
9. This photo shows how the people use the construction barricade as
waiting place beside the road. The background of the photo shows a few
buses which indirectly indicate that the people are waiting for the buses.
It emphasizes the message and theme. The photo also follows the
composition Rule of Third.
10. Layout
In order to make the photobook seems livelier, a series of different layout is used. The layout is
simplified to avoid distraction.
1. A single large photo is placed in this layout. The page number at the lower right corner is
used to add interest to the overall view.
2. There are two photo in this layout. The smaller photo is used to emphasize the message
delivered.
11. 3. A full colour page is used for photo description and another page is placed with a photo.
The photo is surrounded by a white border to reduce its heavy visual weight.
Caption
The photo description title is written in a more Malaysian style and somewhat improper
English to attract attention and display the culture of Kuala Lumpur. The detailed description
below is written is proper English and explain the message intended in the photo along and
related to the overall waiting culture of Kuala Lumpur.
