• Set his sights on Greece
– Is successful

5. Phillip’s Military Strength
• Brilliant military leader
• Used Greece tactics against them
• Phalanx- group of warriors who stood
close together in a square

8. Alexander the Great
• As strong as leader as his father
– Only 20 years old
• Brilliant commander
• Thebes tested his leadership; Alexander
made an example of them.
• Set out to build an empire

10. Building a New Empire
• In 334 BC began to attack the Persians
• Time and time again Alexander won
• Egyptian king surrendered without a fight

12. Marching Home
• Continued to march army through Asia
• In 327 BC crossed the Indus River.... Soldiers
refused to go farther.
• Left India in 325 BC
• In 323 BC became sick in Babylon and died.
– Age 33
– Buried in golden coffin in Egypt
* Alexander’s empire was the world’s largest *

13. Spreading Greek Culture
• Work to spread Greek influence
throughout his empire
• In time, Greek art, literature, and science
spread throughout
• Alexander encouraged the conquered
people to keep their own customs and
traditions

• Hellenistic- Greek-like
• Combined elements of Persian,
Egyptian, Syrian, and other cultures
with Greek ideas.
– Heavily influenced by Greek ideas

– Weakened by fighting it slowly broke apart.
• Egypt
– Built the world’s largest library in Alexandria
– Built the Museum
• Place for scholars and artists to meet
– Became center for culture and learning
