Acadia National Park
By: Erin McGill

The park you will read about is Acadia National Park. This national park is in Maine. It is on the
amazing rapid oceans and you can see many beautiful plants, exotic animals, and antique,
 outstanding Abnaki Indian items.

Acadia National Park is in the northeast corner of the United States. In the cold, breezy winter
days of Maine. Almost the whole park was mountains before they came to work on the park. The
sediment in the mountains only builds up about 1 inch every couple thousand years. Sadly most
of all the mountains melted about 12,000 to 15,000 years ago.The Abnaki's camped there for
6,000 years. In 8,000 B.C. Native Americans named, Abnaki's, settled in Maine.The Abnaki's
camped there for 6,000 years. In 1913 the park was created. President Woodrow Wilson, set
6,000 acres aside for the creators of the park to work with. The park was to be created to protect
the areas specular scenic values. The reason the park is so beautiful now is because John D.
Rockfeller bought and donated over 11,000 acres/57 miles between 1915 and 1935.

There are tons and tons of plants and animals in the park. The endangered plants and animals
are protected. It is home to the Red Bat, Pygmy Shrews, and humpback whales, those animals
are all endangered. There are over 273 species of birds in the park. The Red Spruce is the
dominant tree in the evergreens. Some of the most popular plants are the Pink Lady Slipper,
Trailing Arbutus, Painted Trillium, Frigid Poly-gala, and Wood lily and many, many more. To the
park the Meadow sweet is a very special flower. The Wood lily is called the Head Summit. Pitch
Pines live for about 2 to 3 years and then have to have new seeds planted from the dead leaves of
the old ones. Now to talk about the animals. Some of the animals you might see when you visit
are the American Beaver, Snowshoe Hare, and the herring Gull. Some of the animals you would
see in the oceans are Dog Whelk, Rock Crab, and Starfish (big and little.) Lobster is there main
money source. Lobster is so popular you can and will see at least 15 Lobsters on your trip to
Acadia National Park. The Black Bear and the Bobcat are very rare animals to see there. If you do
see 1 you are very lucky and be sure to take a snapshot of it! There is a bunch of features of this
park. Fact 1 there is 47,748 acres. One of the islands is Mount Desert Island, which is 12 miles
wide and 14 miles long. If you want to go there the summer months are best, like July and
August, but it is open all year. When you go and you don't like it when it is crowded, you may
want to go in December, January, and February, although it is chilly there is still much to see. You
can stay at the Seawall or Blackwoods Campground you can stay there for up to 14 days, and
they are both right on the ocean. Some places to visit while you are there re Abbe Museum, which
has cool, old Indian artifacts, Baker Island, and Wonderland Trail. The lakes and ponds are

aren't very deep, but the largest pond-Long Pond- is about 113' deep. Some smaller, wonderful
lakes and ponds are Duck Pond, Lake Wood, Round Pond, Bubble Pond, The Bowl, The Tarm, And
Aunt Betty Pond.
Millions of years ago mountains covered the entire park. The Abanki Indians came in the birch
bark canoes to this land. The natives used grass and birch tree bark to make vases and baskets.
They used claim shells to mark off the territory, so that other Indian tribes would not
come near their land. After the Abanki Indians went to other parts of the now called state, the
French and English fought for this land for over 150 years. In 1604 French Explorer, Champlain,
sailed the ocean and saw no trees on the islands, but in 1606 the English people the land. The
name of the park changed 3 times since the English claimed it. first is was Sieur De Mounts
National Monuments in 1916. Next it was Lafayette National Park in 1919, and then last it is now
Acadia National Park in1929. If you want to know something cool, here it is-Acadia is Acadie in
French. Millions and millions of people visit each and every year. When you are there you can do
lots of things like, hike, horseback ride, canoe, sail, trail run, and climb, sea kayak, and in the
winter you can ski and snowboard.

Even though this park is beautiful it has some challenges. Air pollution is there main problem
right now. The park doesn't really have that many problems or challenges, but the plants and
animals are dying from air pollution. The volunteers, members, and trail crew made cedar and
stone terraces along the paths which helps stop environmental damage, but still allows guests and
visitors to enjoy the wonderful features. The visitors are encouraged to view and attend the "
Leave No Trace" museum. The museum helps show people what damage is done to the
environment when you don't stay on the trails and pollute to the air with trash and bad gases.

So, I hope you now understand the natural beauty of Acadia National Park. It is the national
park teaming with all forms of plants, animals, and marine life! Maybe some day you can go and
enjoy the natural love there.
