• True “MS Fatigue” vs. “Tiredness”
– MS Fatigue: Unexpected, overwhelming whole body
tiredness not relieved by sleep- usually worsens as day
goes on

– Tiredness: Expected feeling after certain activities or at
end of day

• Cause- Unknown?
• Can be Controlled!

– Don’t use up all of the money (energy)!
– Reserve money (energy) for activities you enjoy

  • 2. MS Symptoms • Fatigue *** • • • • • • • • • Heat Intolerance Cognition Impairment Visual Deficits Bowel and Bladder Dysfunction Visual Disturbances Muscle Weakness Spasticity/ Spasms Pain Difficulty with Walking
  • 3. Fatigue • Most Common Symptom- 80% • True “MS Fatigue” vs. “Tiredness” – MS Fatigue: Unexpected, overwhelming whole body tiredness not relieved by sleep- usually worsens as day goes on – Tiredness: Expected feeling after certain activities or at end of day • Cause- Unknown? • Can be Controlled!

Energy Conservation • Definition: Refers to the reduction in the amount of energy consumed by persons achieved through rational/ practical use. • Monitor your energy (Money Bank=Energy Bank) – Deposits/ withdrawals made throughout day – Don’t use up all of the money (energy)! – Reserve money (energy) for activities you enjoy

Family Visits • Have family contribute to meal by bringing dish (potluck) • Plan ahead and increase space in your home as much as possible: – Push furniture to the walls – Designate “walking traffic” area – Designate space for gifts, food, etc. • • • • Don’t get OVERWHELMED! Take a “time out” Don’t overschedule visits- prioritize Watch alcohol consumption and food intake
  • 20. • • • • • • • • Traveling Make lists Pack ahead of time Carry on! If traveling by air, make prior accomodations to get assistance navigating through airport Get to airport early enough! Consider taxi to airport If traveling by land, plan short/quick rest stops OR overnight stays if needed Rolling/ lightweight suitcase
