Two ways of looking at Open Data The keyhole to: more and more chances and solutions? or more and more threats?
Conflicting starting points Data (Open) data wants to be free
Data protection Data Personal data needs to be protected
Data & Personal data  Data and identifiable personal data  Most data is considered to be personal date  Anonymous data can still be personal data!  It’s not about the actual use of data, but about the potential use of data  Applicability of data protection legislation
re-use and restrictions  Many restrictions, no easy solutions  Will it get worse?  The future: more data, more combinations and more ‘value’ The more value data has, the more interesting + the more restricted the use often is….
A solution for both worlds  Is the tense relationship here to stay?  Denying the problem will only make it much more complex to solve  Practical, technical or fundamental solutions?  Identifiability?

  • 3. Conflicting starting points Data (Open) data wants to be free
  • 4. Data protection Data Personal data needs to be protected
  • 5. Data & Personal data  Data and identifiable personal data  Most data is considered to be personal date  Anonymous data can still be personal data!  It’s not about the actual use of data, but about the potential use of data  Applicability of data protection legislation
  • 6. re-use and restrictions  Many restrictions, no easy solutions  Will it get worse?  The future: more data, more combinations and more ‘value’ The more value data has, the more interesting + the more restricted the use often is….
  • 7. A solution for both worlds  Is the tense relationship here to stay?  Denying the problem will only make it much more complex to solve  Practical, technical or fundamental solutions?  Identifiability?
