13. Comments:
Food for thought
Not personally techno savvy at all hence not a lot gained personally, but interesting to
know.
Further exploration will make this a valuable tool for employer to access, previously
unaware thank you.
I had never heard of e-portfolios- will want to give this a go.
Inspiring- demystified this for me.
Introduce myself, how I became interested in portfolios
Ask if there are any nurses in the room, or are teaching nursing? All health professionals are now covered under the new Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency . Therefore we have a new Nursing and Midwifery Board, whereas previously each state had differing expectations of nurses. There is also a new nurses act.
Backwards?Western Australia, The ACT and Tasmania had already implemented portfolio requirements for registration purposes. Hospitals also have implemented yearly performance apprasials.ProfessionalismIs it a good standard of practice to maintain a portfolio. The ANMC agrees that maintaining a portfolio is the most ‘effective and appropriate means of recording the maintenance of competence’ (ANMC, 2007 p30).Keeping up with the JonesesUniversities have implemeted portfolio requirement, The UK has had portfolios for nursing registration for some time now, Canada requires learning plans
Portfolios have many different uses. Most of the portfolios that are being used are assessment based learning portfolios. However, nurses will choose to use their portfolios for either presentation purposes such as going for a job or for registration requirements.
What can you do as teachers of portfolios? So it really is about preparing nurses to continue using their e-portfolio once they leave university, as nurses are lifelong lerners. Also maintain your own eportfolio.
The workshop I presented was attended by 21 nurses. It was a 4hr workshop which covered topics such as National Registration, CPD, Porftolios, eportfolios, learning plans and reflection.
Most nurses were interested in e-portfolios, but said they would need help setting one up.
These were some of the feedback from the eportfolio session. Previously, I had spoken about portfolios and the importance of maintaining one and what can go into it.
We use this system in our hospital which automatically generates a list of all competency and in-service attendance. However, the system is in the hands of the institution, not the individual. As you can see it is not working at the moment. Even though it shows I have attended a in-service, it doesn’t show what it was about, therefore we cannot use it in its present form in the event we were audited. However, many nurses do not realise this.It would be ok to use this system with mandatory competencies, however portfolios need to be in the hands of the individual, not the institution.
Even now, my competencies and qualifications are not up to date.
This is an example of a company in the US who have developed an all encompassing portfolio system for hospitals.
