Contributing Videos to EOL
Through YouTube and Vimeo
November 2013
About EOL
The Encyclopedia of Life project (EOL; eol.org) is
building an open access collection of biodiversity
information. Content on EOL is organized on taxon
pages, ranging from kingdom all the way down to the
species level.

You can share your species videos with EOL through
YouTube and Vimeo websites. By sharing your videos of
plants, animals, fungi, and microbes you are joining a
global community of scientists and nature enthusiasts
with a mission to document and analyze life on earth.
What Videos Can I Share With EOL?
Any videos of taxa that you feel would provide good examples of
behavior or information about identification are good choices.
You should share materials with EOL only if ONE of the
following applies:
• You are the copyright owner of the materials to be shared
• The copyright owners have consented to a license compatible
with the EOL licensing policy
• The materials are in the public domain
Please read EOL’s Licensing Policy for Content Providers
(http://eol.org/info/eol_licensing_policy) and be mindful of
whether or not your use of that content is permissible.
Sharing Videos With EOL
on YouTube
Steps to Sharing Your YouTube Videos on the
Encyclopedia of Life
1. Upload your video to your YouTube account.
2. Edit your video information: add a Title and Description.
3. In the description section of your video add a taxonomic tag. You only need to
add one tag to your video.

4. Make your video “public” and select a Creative Commons License.
5. Send an email to education@eol.org to let us know you have a video(s) to share
and we will subscribe to your YouTube Channel.

6. Videos will be harvested into EOL on a regular basis. You need not identify
which of your videos are ready for sharing. Our system will find everything on
your channel that is appropriately licensed and tagged.
Upload Your Video to YouTube
Follow directions on YouTube to upload your
video. Make sure to set your privacy option to
Public.
Add a Taxonomic Tag
Click on the Info and Settings icon to open up your video for editing.
Add a Taxonomic Tag
Choose a taxonomic tag for your video
and add it to the Description section
underneath any text. Click on SAVE
CHANGES.

You will only need to add ONE
taxonomic tag to your video. To add a
taxonomic tag you will need to identify
the taxon in your video to some
taxonomic level. EOL serves pages at all
taxonomic levels (from kingdom to
species).
Adding a tag will allow EOL to pull the
video onto the correct EOL page.
Find a list of taxonomic tag formats on
the next slide.
Taxonomic Tag Formats
Choose one of the following tags formats based on
what you know about the organism.
If you know the…
species and genus name; use this tag: [taxonomy:binomial=Ursus maritimus]
genus; use this tag:[taxonomy:genus=Ursus]
family name; use this tag:[taxonomy:family=Ursidae]
order name; use this tag :[taxonomy:order=Carnivora]
class name; use this tag :[taxonomy:class=Mammalia]
phylum name; use this tag:[taxonomy:phylum=Chordata]
kingdom name; use this tag: [taxonomy:kingdom=Animalia]
Choose a Creative Commons License
Click on Advanced Settings. Go to Licenses and rights ownership and
choose Creative Commons – Attribution. Click Save Changes.
Email Us
Send an email to education (at) eol.org to let us
know you have a video(s) to share and we will
subscribe to your YouTube Channel. Your video
should show up on EOL in a day or two.

This will create a connection between your YouTube
account and EOL. In the future if you have any other
videos to share, simply give them a taxonomic tag
and a Creative Commons License and they will
automatically be picked up by EOL.
