end of Summer. It was celebrated on
31st October.
Samhain was the Celtic god of death.

The Celts were afraid of winter. Thy associated it with
death and evil spirits.

With the Roman invasion in 43 AD, Samhain became
a harvest festival. The Christians substituted the
pagan rites for religious ones.

The first day of November was the day of all saints for
the Christians. It was called All Hallows´Day. The
evening of October 31 was All Hallows´Eve. It was
shortened to Halloween.
