as essential as knowing how to read and write.

Innovators in every ﬁeld are increasingly turning to the power of
image and sound to communicate, and students who learn this
21st century literacy are empowered to be full participants in
contemporary society: critical thinkers, effective communicators,
and inspired creators.

As access to tools of media production and distribution become
widely available, the skills and literacy to utilize them
must keep pace.

EDUCATION AT JBFC
Since 2001, Jacob Burns Film Center’s education programs have
helped over 80,000 students gain fluency in the language of image,
sound and story.

Based on this decade of work, JBFC has created a Learning
Framework that establishes the criteria for visual literacy, and a
PreK-12 curriculum that realizes these benchmarks through
dynamic project-based learning.


LUMIERE: JBFC’s INTERACTIVE
PLATFORM FOR VISUAL LITERACY
With this combination of on-the-ground experience, educational
theory, and relationships with ﬁlm industry leaders, JBFC is launching
its most ambitious innovation yet: Lumiere, a mobile and web-based
platform that utilizes challenge-based learning to teach the foundations
of visual literacy.


WHAT IS LUMIERE?


WHAT IS LUMIERE?

Lumiere is an evolving gallery of innovative “viewing and doing”
challenges that teach the principles of visual literacy. Lumiere taps the
power of new technologies to provide access to JBFC’s unique
approach to education, sparking creativity, building collaboration, and
supporting a generation of literate viewers, creators, and
communicators.

Lumiere is designed and built in collaboration with Local Projects, a
media design ﬁrm based in NYC.


WHAT DOES LUMIERE DO?

Lumiere teaches the fundamentals of visual storytelling through
“viewing and doing” challenges in which students combine the
basic media building blocks of text, image, video, and sound.
Lumiere is designed to highlight the role that imagination, process,
and sharing have in the creative learning experience

Lumiere provides core visual literacy curriculum while modeling
how these media-making tools and communication skills can be
adapted across all subject areas. Makers learn from one another
through Lumiere’s community features, while a growing list of
industry leaders and JBFC faculty provide inspiration and
mentorship.

DESIGNING LUMIERE:

To design and build Lumiere, JBFC is collaborating with Local
Projects, an award winning media-design firm for museums and
public spaces. Recognized for their long history of creating inspired
structures for multimedia storytelling and collaboration Local Projects
has designed experiences for clients ranging from StoryCorps to the
9/11 Memorial and Museum.

WHY IS IT CALLED
LUMIERE?
The Lumiere Brothers introduced the moving image with their Cinematograph
camera in 1895, and shortly thereafter, the idea
of the cinema–viewing as a collective social experience. They
were technologists, artists, futurists, and creators. Their short films span all
subject matter from documentary to comedy–foreshadowing
the primary role of the moving image in the 20th and 21st century.
Based in the real-world history of film-making but referencing the
forward looking inventiveness of the Lumiere Brothers’ vision,
Lumiere is grounded in the fundamentals but experimental in its experience.
Lumiere means “light,” the most fundamental, poetic
aspect of the moving image.
