Editor's Notes
Opening Comments: ~An unpredictable data center environment is common among IT managers. In today’s data centers, traditional cooling approaches involve complex air distribution systems that tend to be unpredictable and leave many customers guessing where the cold air goes. With the InfraStruXure InRow RC, APC has taken the guess work out of data center cooling. Placing the unit in the row of racks moves the source of cooling closer to the heat load. This minimizes air mixing and provides a predictable cooling architecture. ~The in-row architecture provides “predictable cooling solutions for an unpredictable environment” improving the availability data center.
Opening Comments: The following illustration displays the many benefits of the InRow RC. ~ ~Variable speed hot swappable fans reduce energy consumption during off-peak cooling periods. These fans are easily replaced while the unit is in operation , and do not warrant a service call. ~A dual A-B power input, when plugged into redundant power sources, maximizes uptime. ~The cooling coil has been designed to maximize heat transfer utilizing a copper tube, aluminum fin construction, and chilled water as the source for heat rejection, ~Chilled water can be piped through the top or bottom of the unit, thus adapting to any IT environment. ~As APC enhances our data center management capability we are striving to provide more visibility to the IT manager. As a result a flow meter has been incorporated into the InRow RC to provide the IT manager with the output cooling capacity in kW. ~A fully modulating valve is microprocessor controlled to automatically direct the proper amount of chilled water into the cooling coil based on the cooling demand. The piping within the unit is set up to allow for the valve to be field configuration for 2-way or 3-way operation. ~The air filter removes airborne particles in order to protect the cooling coil. The InRow RC comes standard with a cleanable mesh filter. An optional 2 inch 30% efficient filter is available. ~Casters allow for mobility and easy installation. ~The unit is equipped with a primary and secondary drain pan to collect any condensation that may occur from the cooling coil. Condensation is detected in the drain pan using redundant float switches. Once condensation is detected, the condensate pump will remove water from the drain pan.

The InRow RC 600mm unit comes standard with a 4” filter. ~Casters allow for mobility and easy installation.
Opening Comments : ~The InRow RC is designed for Horizontal Airflow. Removing the heat from the hot aisle is a better return air path than placing the air conditioner along the perimeter. ~The InRow RC is placed in the row, minimizing air mixing by being coupled next to the source of the heat. ~The hot air enters from the rear of the unit and passes through the cooling coil. ~Where the heat is captured and rejected to chilled water ~Cold air is then supplied to the room. ~The InRow RC is suitable for use on a hard or raised floor.
Opening Comments: ~This easy to use display allows the operator to view the status of the system. ~When powered on, the System Status light will illuminate green. ~To notify the operator of a new alarm condition, the Check Log status light will illuminate yellow, ~the Warning status light will illuminate yellow for a minor alarm, ~and when a major alarm occurs, the Critical status light will illuminate red. ~The operator can also select options from the devices intuitive menu-driven interface that is common among APC products. ~The user can view: Set-points Operating Parameters Environmental Conditions System Log and Alarm Conditions
Opening Comments: ~One of the benefits of the InRow RC is it’s management capabilities ~Each InRow RC has a Network Management Card. This card provides e mbedded management of each individual RC by connecting the air conditioner directly to the network with a dedicated IP address. ~It is also compatible with InfraStruXure Manager which provides centralized management for the APC network critical physical infrastructure. ~The solution is browser accessible which saves installing software on the network management console. ~On the main screen you can view : Analysis & report features such as trending data logs, Administrative features including read-only access, Monitoring & notification features such as fault notification of critical events, and it can forward SNMP traps to your preferred enterprise management system.
The standard warranty is 1 year parts only. However, labor is included when startup is purchased with the InRow RC. In order to maintain warranty protection, preventative maintenance services must be purchased through APC. Coupling the InRow RC with ISX allows for an extended warranty.
The InRow RC can be accessed via the APC InfraStruXure Build-out Tool on the web. The InRow configurator allows the user to determine the cooling medium and then proceeds to offer system options and accessories such as troughs. The InRow RC can be selected for mid to large size configurations as well as high density applications.
Opening Comments: The InRow RC has many accessory options that may make up the system in many cases. ~Hot Aisle Containment can be used in high density applications to eliminate mixing with cold supply air to increase availability. ~The modular air cooled chiller can be selected as a method of heat rejection for the chilled water. ~The ISX Manager provides a centralized system management tool for the IT environment. ~ The Cooling Distribution Unit is used to distribute chilled water to the InRow RC. ~Flexible and jointless piping allows for quick deployment and startup. Can be used with the 300mm unit only. ~Overhead cable management can be accomplished using troughs and data partitions.
Closing: The InfraStruXure InRow RC is a modular cooling solution designed to be installed in-row with IT equipment racks. ~Agility is increased with the modular design of the InRow RC by enabling the customers to easily add units as demand increases. The adaptability of the design and small foot print enables units to be easily installed providing the scalablibility IT Managers are looking for. ~By capturing air directly from the hot aisle, the InRow RC operates more efficiently than perimeter cooling units and can be more closely matched to the power load. ~The in-row architecture takes the guess work out of data center air distribution by moving the cooling unit closer to the source of the heat, which minimizes air mixing and improves overall availability. ~This is why the InRow RC is the “predictable cooling solution for an unpredictable environment” AWARDS: Product of the Year 2006: Silver Award The GCN Best of FOSE 2006 GCN and sister publication Washington Technology
