La tomatina
1.
2. La Tomatina is a massive tomato fight held in different parts of Spain on the last Wednesday
of every August. Which has been a strong tradition since 1944. It was held on the 29th this
year.
Participants who show up from around the world to compete.
There are around 150,000 tomatoes used which is over 40, 000 kilograms of tomatoes!
It starts off by big buckets of water thrown at the crowds by people in a tomato truck. It
starts by placing a ham on top a greasy pole. People compete to try and grab the ham. Once
someone manages to climb up and get a hold of it, a cannon is set off and everyone starts to
throw all of the tomatoes at each other.
A cannon goes off after all of the tomatoes are almost gone and everyone stops. After the
battle, you can hose off the splatter on the riverbank, where the town comes together and
gets washed by the town fire-fighters in the fire trucks coming past them.
Every year, the fight is nationally televised by the most prestigious agencies in Spain.
Most people wear goggles to protect their eyes.
3. No one is completely certain how the festival started. There are many possible
theories on how La Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends, a food
fight in the class room, tomatoes thrown from the audience at a carnival parade, a
practical joke on a bad musician or an accidental lorry spillage. There is no political or
religious significance to La Tomatina, it's just good, messy fun.
One popular theory is that angry townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes
during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed
so much that it was repeated the next year, and the year after that, and so on.
The holiday was banned during the Spanish State period under Francisco Franco for
having no religious significance, but returned in the 1970s after his demise.
The festival is in honour of the town's patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu
dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary.
4. • Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause
accidents and hurt other participants
• Do not rip purposely other people’s T-shirts
• You must squash the tomatoes before throwing them as
this reduces the impact
• Ensure you keep a safe distance from the lorries
• As soon as you hear the second cannon shot, you must stop
throwing tomatoes
