1. 1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. I would say that my magazine uses a variety of
codes and conventions throughout and develops
these. I have done this so that the audience
easily recognises the magazine publication as a
magazine. Especially the primary target
audience are a younger audience, I think that it
is important to follow the codes and
conventions of a magazine to keep the layout
simple so that the audience can instantly
recognize what it is.
4. Mast Head
The mast head is the magazines trademark. The mast head I have used is iconic of
the magazine institution. Every magazine produced will use this mast head. It will
be positioned in the same place, will use the same font however the colour may
change based on what edition the magazine is.
Top and bottom strap-line
These are boxes at the top and bottom of the magazine. They give more information
about what is in the magazine. They are commonly used because the make the text
stand out more so that it doesn’t blend too much with the rest of the magazine.
5. Pug
The ‘ears of the magazine’. The price of the magazine, the
barcode and the issue number and the date that it’s on sale. It
lets people know how much the magazine is and every
magazine provides this information. The barcode lets people
know that the magazine is for sale.
Main image
Typically showing the artist directly associated with the
main article in this issue. Placed in the middle of the
page with the writing positioned around it. This main
image gives an insight as to what is in the magazine. I do
think with this however I have challenged typical codes
and conventions of a magazine.
6. Cover lines
The essential articles inside the magazine. They are stated through
less lines and are seen at the left of the page. This is because people
read from left to right so they won’t miss it. I have also added smaller
pictures to support the writing. Also because the audience is younger,
the pictures will keep them engaged.
Tag
The tag word ‘exclusive’ suggests that the
magazine has original content that no one else
has. It engages with the reader because they
will feel like they’ve read something that no
one else has. This gives the magazine high
compliments because the word is used as
promotional item to encourage people to read
on.
8. Structured Layout
I have split the articles up into different sections with
headings to give it a structured layout. This engages with the
reader because they will easily be able to recognize what the
articles are about e.g. if it is a competition or celeb gossip.
Letter from the Editor
I have included a letter from the editor which
creates a relationship between the editor and
the reader. It makes the issue more personal to
the person reading it. Addressing it to ‘girls’
directs the magazine specifically at a niche
audience being young females.
9. Page numbers
I have added page numbers next to each article to make it easier for the
audience to navigate to the page in which they require. This is used by every
magazine institution to make the magazine easier to read.
Images
I’ve used a larger image in the bottom right
hand corner. This image shows the same
artist that features on the front cover. This
is a common code and convention because
it shows that the main article is about a
specific band. I have used smaller images
to illustrate the articles. The smaller images
keep the audience engaged because it
breaks the page up and keeps them
entertained.
11. Image
The main image and the text bleeds across both
pages. The image uses direct mode of address which
entices the reader to buy the magazine because one
of the artists is looking directly at the audience
making it more personal. The close up image takes up
most of the page.
Content
For the content of the magazine I have chosen to do an exclusive interview.
This is used a lot in music magazines and it creates a relationship between
the audience and the artist. The questions have been kept short and simple
so that the audience is kept engaged throughout.
12. Social media
In the bottom strap line I have included links to social media that the band have. The
box is blue so that it stands out from the rest of the writing on the page. I have used
the iconic fonts associated with each social networking site because this makes it
easily recognizable to the audience. I’ve also added the logos of the sites so people
can instantly recognize what social networking sites are available.
13. Throughout the whole magazine I have adopted
an in-house style. I have stuck to using typically
girly colours to attract my primary target
audience of girls aged 11-15. I have also used
bright vibrant colours to make the content stand
out more. Also bright vibrant colours are often
associated with younger people and it connotes
the liveliness of the magazine.
