Evaluation question 2
1. Question 2
– How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
texts?
2. Our topic this year was to construct a film trailer of a chosen genre, and to also produce and film poster and magazine
cover to accompany the film trailer. It was advised to do a social realism trailer as many films today are of that genre.
In the real world of media, production and distribution companies always aim to promote their films In as many ways as
possible, this way they will hopefully attract a larger target audience and therefore benefit even more as they will make
more money from the film. With the right focus and resources these 3 different texts can work alongside each other to
promote a film.
3. When designing my magazine cover, I intended it to be released very closely
to the release date of the actual film. This way, people may have heard
about it from either seeing the trailer or seeing a poster. However after
looking back through onto my word I realised have got my dates muddled
up and not put the proper release dates in.The ‘This years must see’ draws
readers in, and also tells them about the film that they will hopefully then go
and see. If I had a realistic times scale I would prefer it to be released first, a
few weeks before the film itself is released, then the trailer closer to the
time of release, and the magazine cover would be used after the film has
been released, but is still open in the cinema. This way, people who have
already seen the film can find out more about the ‘behind-the-scenes’
action, and readers who have yet to have seen the film will be persuaded to
go and see it.
The idea of making a film poster as well as a magazine cover,
was that they would be recognisable as the same film.
I used the same colour schemes across both texts, and they
also relate to the mood and general atmosphere, the use of blues,
navy and blacks. I also made sure I used to same font and colour on
the ‘Little Steps’, by doing this It added more continuity to the
pieces.Again by using that same font and colours it will hopefully
tell my audience that these works are part of the same
feature is the use of the same girl across
the products: the audience will hopefully
realise that all three products are promoting
the same film.
4. Predominately with my audience feedback, it was said my products do look like they fit together very well, especially
the film trailer and poster. However if it is one thing that was said it was that the magazine could have been a little more
like the poster, even though it was the same colours the audience felt that I could or should have but the background
photo of the main character in black and white instead of leaving it. One particular response said ‘the use of similar
colours across both the poster and magazine cover sets the tone for the trailer as well. As I used my questionnaire to
incorporate aspects of evaluation question 2 and 3, I also asked my participants if the products would convince them to
go and see the film in the cinema at its release. All of the responses were positive: ‘the trailer in particular makes me
want to go and see this film, as it gives just the right amount of the story away, which leaves the audience intrigued as
to what the story is about, I’d definitely see it.’
If I was to redesign my magazine cover I would make the main character look a little more miserable as she looks to
happy on the cover which is not the affect I was going for as my genre is social realism and doesn’t tend to have a
‘happy’ feel about it.Although my poster photo isn’t of a character I still like the decision I made to just use shoes, my
reason for this is it always the audience to know my film is about dancing and it also allows them to make up their own
story or film and be shocked when they actually watch it. I think this is a good thing because it may make the audience
more inclined to watch the film as they want to know what they have made up is true or not.
